Who's hunting Sitka blacktails?
I will be on Kodiak August 1, God willing. This makes 8 of the past 9 years hunting deer in AK for me. This will be my first hunt on Kodiak Island so I hope it's a good one.
Who else is hunting Sitka deer this year?
I’ll be there in Nov. Third trip to Kodiak plus once on POW.
First trip to Kodiak for me this October!
I’ll be making my first trip there in November.
Just hoping the group before us saves us a few. ; )
Good luck guys... I have an elk tag, otherwise I'd be going. Ed F
Good luck Jim! Hunting antelope in Wyoming with Nathan but would love to go back to Kodiak on an early hunt…. Maybe next year!
I’ll be on Kodiak goat hunting again this year, but with three deer tags in my pocket I’ll definitely have my eyes peeled a bit lower down the mountain as usual.
Best of luck! Had an opportunity to go this year...but drew an Iowa tag. I'll be there November 2022.
Last November we had a rough go at finding bucks and the goat hunting was a bit sketchy without crampons. The bears were pretty fiesty, wish we had gone south more and skipped the goat part altogether.
I’ll be there around Thanksgiving, but gun hunting, with an outfitter.
Gonna finish my deer slam!
For you guys doing the early hunts on Kodiak....I hope you're taking your fishing poles for the salmon runs!!
That is the reason for wanting to go early!
Aug 1 is early... The big bucks wont finish growing for another week. We have killed a few first week of Aug and the tips were still soft. But the hunting is great, and fishing on Kodiak is as well
First Alaskan hunt for me in November with a boatload of shady characters!
Shade is my middle name!
Have fun guys. Nothing like Kodiak
If anyone needs another person to fill out their boat in November, let me know. I am looking for a boat based deer hunt on Kodiak. Thanks, Bill
Same and TEmbry headed to Kodiak at the end of october for goats and deer.
Heading up in November for my first of hopefully many Alaskan hunts. Can't wait for the adventure, I know it will be a great time with a great crew. If I have enough fun I might even leave a buck for iceman :)
Is the freezer storage place still up and running at the Anchorage airport?
Have not heard of that JL, but I guess it's possible.
Nick.....ya....I've used it a couple of times. It's a good and convienant deal if you have meat or fish to bring back.
I'm looking into this for 2022 or 2023. I have heard of Homer Ocean Charters. Can anyone recommend any other outfits to look into for boat based hunts on Kodiak? Please PM me if you are willing to share info.
I was in AK a few weeks ago and the Frozen Storage is available at the Anchorage Airport. Open from 4AM to Midnight. I lucked out. When I arrived with 3 25# boxes of fish the sign said "freezer full". I waited in line anyways and thankfully a few guys were behind me pulling theirs out so I got to store mine for the night.
Good luck to all you guys !
I'm home from a very successful hunt on Kodiak. I had a number of stalk, passed up some decent bucks and took one really good 3 x 3.
Congrats, Jim....beauty! How were the numbers?
Nice work Jim!!!!! Looks like a pile of fun
Nice job Jim! You are the man with traditional archery.
Very Nice, congrats on your Kodiak Buck!
Great pic. Well done gettin' it done with stick and string equipment!!! Any other pics or vids you can share?
Congrats Jim... nice one. Ed F
I’m contemplating going back this November if anyone else has a float plane with Seahawk Air or Island Air looking for another person to split the cost of dropping to the south end. PM me, I have a bear fence and gear.
Great pic Jim! Congrats!!
Just got back into town on Kodiak after an epic week.
Wow! Hopefully a story and pics follow....
Fantastic pics and a big congrats to all!
Just another week for Trevor, that kinda shit happens to him every week… ;)
Looks like a great week. Congrats
Wow Trevor!! Hell of a trip!
Wow Trevor!! Hell of a trip!
great pictures and fantastic trophies!!!! Congratulations
Wowzer! Missed Trevor’s pictures! Looks like an epic hunt! Great deer and goat!
Love that place!
When do the Kodiak deer generally strip the velvet from their antlers???
From Trevor’s pictures, and giving a little lag time for them to get home, it looks to be about the first week of September?
The bucks we shot in early August were still pretty soft and seemed a long ways from shedding. On POW they shed around the 7th of August. Looks later on Kodiak, but I would like to know more.
Outfrikenstanding Trevor... you're living my dream... Ed F
They don't all shed that early on POW. I'd say its more typically around mid month for most bucks on the average year. Early springs they do tend to shed earlier. As you know, I've never hunted Kodiak in the summer, so I couldn't say on Kodiak. Previous opinions are based upon 25 plus years of direct observation.
That’s what I stated above- the antlers don’t get hard til 2nd week of August on big bucks on Kodiak- but it’s a great time to be out there!
