It's Almost Go Time - Are You Ready!
Moose

Just about one month until I board a plane for Alaska to hunt moose and caribou with John Havard. I hope to add another locking tag or two to my collection. I know Kevin Dill, Jeff Holchin, Preston Lay, Duane Krones, Walt Francis, Bryan Burkhardt, Monty Browning, Mike Mitten, and a few others are also heading to Alaska to hunt moose. Any final preparations or advice?
Holy mackerel....I need to start shooting my bow!
Sorting through gear...check. Critical gear test...check. Talk to pilot...check. Shooting bow 2x daily...check! I'm more fired up than usual about this season. Going back to my all-time favorite hideout deep in the bush. I have to pay extra due to distance, but it's worth it. I feel very physically good...no excess weight. Vaccinated of course. My hunting partner is Jeff Holchin and I'm still not too worried...even if I was desperate. ;-) The final weeks will roll by quickly and soon we'll be seeing yellow birch and waking up in frosty tents.
Best of luck Terry!
Are you coming thru Fairbanks Terry?
Hi Pete! Unfortunately, not! We fly into Anchorage and then drive to Tok for the bush flight. Been a long time since we've been able to share a meal. I love getting your cards each year to hear how the Buist clan is faring. Thank you for sending them. I'm now in Indiana and always open for a visitor.
Kevin, only one weak link in your plan and well...we know what that is. :) Can't wait! Have to go shoot a couple gators Aug 15 - 22 and then it'll be full press Alaska. I wish you the best of luck, although I know your experience and preparation make your luck.
Hey Pete and Kevin. Living vicariously this year. No tags and no hunts other than local so post some recaps, please.
NY, you could make a couple necklaces or some modern art with all those locking tags!
Enjoy!
Yup you boys have a great time up north and we are all hoping for some good bow site posts when you're done. Good luck and enjoy it!
Apparently Fairbanks area has had a very warm summer; even breaking records for heat recently. I may decide to throw a beach towel and sunscreen in my duffel.
I'll be flying out late September for the forth year in a row, cant wait. Up to 3 weeks of elk hunting first.
Take pictures for all of us not able to enjoy these types of hunts!
I heard that Kevin was looking for a partner with a strong back and weak mind, so I told him “I’m your man!”. Happy to be the weak link, if it means that I get to hunt moose again...
Sunrise photo taken from the camp Jeff and I will be in shortly:
"Walkin' & Talkin' "
Sunset photo taken the day I killed a large bull...
This will be my groups 3rd time to Alaska this year. When I started elk hunting in my early 20s i got hooked on the mountains. I told everyone that would listen they need to go elk hunting or at least go to elk camp. There is just something about being in elk camp in Sept
Now that I’ve been elk hunting 12 times the awe of the mountains has been replaced by the AWE of Alaska. My 5 guys and I are getting dropped off in unit 16 as 3 groups of 2 to help with success. We plan on learning as much as we can on this hunt and use it with what we learned caribou hunting to jump with both feet into Alaskan DIY hunting. We have bought a PR49 and a KORK to use on this hunt and plan on DIY float hunt next yr for caribou or get a pioneer and do a what ever moves hunt with a pocket full of tags and bring my dad along.
I am at 6-8 points in 4 states for elk and deer points so I plan on hunting up in AK for a few more years while I build points.
Good luck, boys! Bring us back some stories!
Best of luck to you guys. Look forward to hearing the hunt takes.
Yes sir, I'm roaring and ready to go. Like Kevin it's been a ritual that started a while back. Lots of physical conditioning to pack Moose meat along with many focused arrows on their way to the mark. Most of my gear has arrived safe and sound at our air taxi up North. I'm excited for Duane to be making his first trip to Alaska. His excitement is contagious. Won't be long now!! Thanks for the photo's Kevin.
Hopefully we see some great stories, pics and vids soon......
NY Bowman & Kevin Dill helped me out tremendously on my previous trips.. wish i could do it every year.. good luck and stay safe out there to all of you sob’s..
Food, tarps and other misc items in a box have been delivered to Alaska in July.
I’ve packed, unpacked and repacked at least 3 times now.
14 day Hunting and fishing license purchased yesterday
On Sept 2, just gonna hunt elk a few days before I head to Alaska
Before he was NY Bowman, Terry sparked much interest in bowhunting Alaska among the members of the Indiana Bowhunter Association. Sorry Terry, I couldn't resist this opportunity! Best of luck!
Good luck everyone and safe travels
Smell the roses every day, or camp coffee, which ever you prefer.
I have my deer kill tags all filled out except the date. That way I don't have to try to write them out in the woods. I am 79 years old and slowing down so my Gator will do my dragging. I used to kill about 10 deer per year with my bow but now only want a couple. Heck, I will even shoot one with a 350 legend for the first time since it is now legal in Maryland. Old age sucks but it beats the alternative.

Paul, that is a blast from the past. I am back home in Indiana and love being near family and great whitetail hunting. Sorry I missed you all at the IBA banquet. Last minute plan change. Hope to see you soon. Best of luck on your hunts this Fall.
Good luck everyone, especially Carcus! No fly-in for me this year.
This year will be my 2nd alaskan moose hunt. Gonna hold out with my bow as long as possible. Can't wait to be there!
I'm stoked for all you guys....lots of mentors and friends on that list. Terry, who is your partner for this trip?
Julian, it is John Havard. Looking forward to a few close encounters.
Kevin's post-hunt downloads are epic and inspirational . Safe travels to those tackling this tough adventure.
Good friends Bryan Burkhardt & Monty Browning leaving tomorrow for a hopefully-epic caribou/moose adventure lasting 3 weeks.
Walt Francis headed north soon with his selfbow for another solo go at a huge bull.
Terry Receveur (the Gator Getter) and John Havard (the Moose Professor) bound for Tok quite soon and then into the vastness of Fortymile country.
Jeff Holchin (known as Kill-Switch to one of our mutual buddies) had a run of bad luck and thus finds himself heading up with me in 10 days. ;-)
'My' airstrip is on a tributary creek which good pal, funnyman and gritty outdoorsman Julian Tisdale likes to call the 'Little Dillta'. Thanks JT....I'll write your initials in the sand.
Current temp in the area is 33F. I can see velvet shreds hanging, and taste blueberries. I literally can't wait to click-in and hear the Super Cub fire up.
I’ve packed and repacked several times.
Got my archery elk hunt coming up this week and two weeks from today - Sept 12 - we’ll be calling moose.
Forecast looks awesome where we going.
Got new arrow shafts this year and finished broadhead tuning yesterday. QAD Exodus grouping minty to the bottom pin!
Flights are booked for the 15th and 23rd. Gotta build a cabin while we hunt but small price to pay for a great hunt
The location I'm headed to didn't get hunted last year. It's just delightful to think about all those ignorant bulls galloping to our calls. Should be quite a spectacle....
I specialize in hunting ignorant/dumb animals so this upcoming moose hunt offers some real promise for me.....
Another pair of PBSers headed to AK for moose very soon is Preston Lay and Duane Krones. Go get ‘em boys!
Did someone say ignorant/dumb animals? Hey, I resemble that statement. Maybe it will up my odds. My flight leaves on Sun and hopefully by this time next week, I'll be hunting moose and caribou. Good luck and be safe everyone.
Leave out of Tulsa at 05:00AM Saturday. It's go time! Anxiously await frosty morning and hearing bull grunts. Good luck everyone, have a safe hunt.
In the interest of full disclosure....I had an "incident" and can no longer refer to Holchin as Killswitch with a clean conscience...lol I hope all of you guys have a great hunt. Already anxiously awaiting the reports.
