Great pics and trip! Good luck this season.
No treestands...I hate myself but not enough to pack one of those back in there.
Nice pics Jordan.. Can i be your new bestest friend??
That many bulls around you don’t need a tree stand
Cow and calf talk, kick rocks, beak sticks with your boots. Sound like some cows and calves moving around eating 200 yards from bedding areas. After 10-15 minutes of that if nothing comes in add in some tree raking, and a quiet rag horn type bugle.
You should have no problem getting a shot opportunity doing this over and over again in all the suspected bedding areas end of august first 7-10 days of September. After that the bulls will move off to where the cows are and their yearly rutting areas.
I noticed most of the pics are in the evenings. What’s typical of the late afternoon/evening winds in your area? Is it reasonably steady or does it have a tendency to swirl?
Always enjoy "elk" and "elky places" pics.
The pics of critters are all game cam. I have yet to lay eyes on critter back there other than the big kitty back in late June. There are plenty of fresh tracks though.
It is different this year for sure. In the past the elk filtered out into the meadows and the drainages about 1/2 hour before dark and would spend the night, often still there in the morning. Not so much this year. Not sure if the kitty pressure has changed their habits or more peeps have been going back there and pressuring them into the timber or what.
This is below 9000' so swirling winds have not been a huge problem in the past. Pretty reliable with prevailing westerly breezes mostly. So I can camp close to the hunting and be arranged to no be scented for the most part.
Not alot of cows around and never have been. Generally 1 to ever 5 bulls. It is a pre-rut bachelor area for the most part. They have proven to be susceptible to a sweet little cow calling many times in the past though.
Gonna be fun no matter what. Except the getting in and out part...........ugh. Good news is, in 3 more years some of those dink bulls are gonna be dandy's given the genetics of their daddy's. Look forward to seeing the son's of the ole 7x7 who I hear was shot and lost back in 2019. Here he is in his glory days. Date on the cam is wrong.....this was July or August 2017 I believe.
Jordan, what are you going to do with the rest of the season, after you tag out??? I recall on your odds thread from a couple months back, I put your odds at filling your tag at 95%. I'll stand by my prediction- good luck!!
Great looking area, should be a good hunt for you
Thanks for sharing BigJ
I'm thinking your gonna get the monkey off your back this year and get ya a Bull
Good luck, Robb
