I traveled to VT the deer archery opener. Friday morning I almost got it done when a group of does came in. They caught my wind just before they hit one of my lanes. Saturday morning I went back to the same stand to try my luck again. Around 7:20am I look up the ridge and see a nice lone bear working down towards me. Within seconds he was at 10 yards. I drew, settled in and picked a spot. The shot broke and my arrow disappeared right where I was looking. The arrow didn’t even slow down going through him. The bear ran off down the hill and disappeared. I thought I heard a crash but was worried because I didn’t hear the death moan. The arrow looked great and we had a big rain storm on the way so I just gave it an hour and started tracking. The blood was sparse and hard to follow, so I moved ahead to where I lost sight of him. I stood there looking down off the cliff and didn’t see a thing. I looked to my right and there he was 50 yards away hung up on a log, at the edge of a very steep drop off! I walked back the the house, ditched my gear, grabbed my pack and game bag and met up with a buddy who came to help me. We hiked back up the steep slope and down the other side to the bear. We processed it and loaded it in my pack. I don’t think I could have gotten it out any other way. What an amazing morning!
