So we have this spike buck we call Hulk. I saw him last year on our cams and immediately realized he wasn't a yearling. He chases the does and is aggressive with the bucks. We're guessing at least three years old.

Looks like a classic 3 year old. Big shoulders tapering to the butt. Is he legal to shoot? If so I’d kill him.

28-Oct-21
Likely older than 3 based on body composition. Hate to burn a tag on him but get rid of him

5.5

Someone needs to shoot him and send the teeth in for aging

From: milnrick

Well pronounced shoulders, slight sag in the belly... I'd say 4.5. If there was a bit of a sway back happening I'd guess older.

29-Oct-21
He’s 4.5 minimum.

Kill him, he’s dangerous to other bucks.

He definitely needs to come out of the herd. I would say 4.5 plus and agree with Drycreek he could easily kill other bucks.

No guess on Hulk's age but I will guess that he's been living long enough to be kicking the butts of other bucks and carousing with the ladies all while getting a pass from hunters because of his diminished head gear. "Old" Hulk is living the high life!

My guess would be 4 or older. Pretty stocky.

I’d say 31/2 year old who eats well .

Yeah, I agree, he needs to come out of the gene pool. He hasn't come by me yet while hunting and I'll gladly wrap my gun tag around him if he shows up.

Great post K2S. These are great for people who immediately guess age based on rack size. Living in Wisconsin, I'm proud to say I usually comment: he's at least 3 when they grow a decent rack, or carry a body like your spike there. Beyond obvious maturity, there's never enough evidence to guess any better in my opinion. I've seen deer that were tooth aged by cross section that you'd guess to be carrying an AARP card that aged 3.5, and others that you'd guess no older than 3.5 that were 9? I usually say he's big enough, or he's at least a 3 year old just to be safe. Obviously your spike is a yearling lol.....after all, it's a spike! A lot of variables within our southern and northern border alone.....and everything in between!

There’s one way to live longer as a buck… poor genetics.

I maybe the only one but not convinced that is a old deer. Do you have any pictures with him with other deer for reference on size?

This reminds me of a buck I saw a couple years ago. This huge bodied buck slipped out of the bedding cover and snuck by me at 30 yards. It looked to me like he had small spike antlers, so I had committed not to shoot. As she approached and at that point, I could not move, I realized what looked like spike antlers initially, were actually the remnants of both his larger antlers that had been broken off, and the only thing left were the splintered remnants which looked like small spikes! In hindsight, I wish I could have shot him!

Huntcell that is crazy - That means he was born during the rut instead of conceived during it! Maybe he is the Jesus of the deer world. I bet if shot he comes back to life three days later.

OK maybe there are two of these running around, and the unicorn one is a bit smaller, and maybe an offspring of Hulk. Me buddy Klaus, from Antlers by Klaus, has seen the double spike one from stand a couple times and he's the one that nicknamed him. The unicorn one looks to have a shorter nose.
