Another new Covid strain in SA

For you guys and gals who are heading to South Africa, they just found another new strain of Covid specifically centered around Johannesburg. I've been to SA and came back sick. It took a long time to get back to normal, and I still have effects. Africa has a way to produce some really nasty bugs.

The new variant will definitely be here soon, and the dems will love it. Covid is their alternate religion now, next to climate change. It's what put Brandon in the Oval Office. Midterms are looking disastrous for them.......they have to do SOMETHING! This, in addition to some national military clash somewhere in the world, might distract voters enough.....might help Brandon keep his Senate majority at least, and keep confirming radical judges and placing socialists in positions of power. In other news.....I go in tonight to get my flu shot and 3rd virus shot. Hopefully the combo doesn't knock me down. I was wanting to go hunting tomorrow. Was also concerned about another border closure....the north one that is.

At this point it's way too early to get unduly concerned over this new strain. What is known at this time is that there have been a number of mutations in the spike protein (the target antigen for all COVID vaccines); what is unknown is the extent of those mutations and what effect, if any they'll have on the effectiveness of the current vaccines.
I really dislike seeing speculation about immune system avoidance already given how little we know about the impact of the mutations on vaccine effectiveness; additionally, we don't know the full ramifications with regard to transmission enhancement and virulence either (some mutations that have already occurred with SARS-CoV-2 have produced variants with decreased to no pathogenicity).
There is solid evidence that this new strain developed in a chronically ill (with COVID-19) immunocompromised patient in South Africa (so this would technically be a South African variant or strain from the parent strain).
One thing I've felt (and posted about) early on was that we might reach a stage where a vaccine became a multivalent one (multiple strains), much as we have done with the Influenza vaccines. As we learn more through genome analysis of variants we can adapt vaccines to maintain effective immune responses in the vaccinated.
I'll keep an eye on this and post any relevant updates. Hope everyone had a great Thansgiving!

The early news on this strain is it’s symptoms are very mild. Similar to a 1-2 day mild cold.
FYI,
American citizens are NOT banned from traveling to South Africa or the other listed African countries. The new restrictions state that African citizens from those listed countries are restricted from coming here. The same requirements for US citizens in regard to getting a PCR test to travel to and re-enter the USA still apply. Nothing has changed for US citizens. There is absolutely no reason to change or cancel your safari plans at this time.

Wife & and daughter are long time Nurses. They say lot's of vax persons coming in WITH Covid. Gov't tells US (Faucie in particular) a vaxed person will be LESS sick when they get it.. Why the Fk did we get vax anyway??? Is there real proof a vaxer is less sick than non vax currently? Yes, I have both & booster but have always been skeptical. We have 3 family members with Covid now. 1 is 16, 1 is 35 & one is early 40s.. One other, 50s had it earlier this year. So far, mild symtoms. I say, Covid is our new FLU... We know of 3 passing from (they say, Covid). All older AND HAD other underlying conditions (so, was Covid the real culprit?). I do think Covid is spread faster but then, when 1 in the family gets a cold, guess what, most of the time, we all get it, right...

I just lost a great friend to this. He was the last person you thought that would die from it. Great shape. 47 years old. Still competing on the Stihl timber sports tour. Just a physical specimen. Got diagnosed with Covid then pneumonia. He did great getting better as the week went on. Developed clots and was ventilated. Never woke up. So, my feelings aren’t coming from a one sided view.
Treatment protocols are killing people. The virus is killing people. Let’s all just lock up and give up. SMH. That’s responsible. Let's be honest, no one is saying that - other than perhaps the anti-vax crowd whose agenda is advanced by introducing half-truths to mock the situation.
The vaccines did a great job at keeping people from getting the original strain, but the virus mutated and we started to see breakthrough cases with the Delta variant. While very unfortunate, it was also understandable - even predictable - given the nature of corona viruses. Even though the vaccinated can become infected (albeit at about 1/5th the rate of the unvaccinated), the vaccines still provide good protection from severe disease and death (~90% effective). The vaccinated are also less likely to spread the disease as they generally clear the virus faster than the unvaccinated.

Omicron already existed here in the USA and throughout Europe when Brandon instituted his travel ban.. Omicron is now in 38 countries and counting... Omicron will be sold as the new "threat" here in the USA at least until the mid-term elections (or until the newest variant is discovered)... This travel ban is just another politically motivated, virtue signaling gesture with no basis in regard to the "science".... Making the assertion that traveling to Africa poses too much risk in regard to contracting Covid is absurd.
