Son’s Longbow Dec Buck
Whitetail Deer

My son (and I) have been after this buck for a few years. I’m glad we didn’t catch up to him last year, as he was heavier this season.
I can’t believe it came together for him this week. I’ve been in TN for the last few days and haven’t been able to see the results first hand yet.
He hunted around 60 days with the longbow this fall and was super excited when it all came together. The buck scores 181”. Typical 6x6.
Just wanted to share.
Great buck! Amazing the shed was so close!
LOL..... cnelk
Great buck.. Congrats.

Slammer buck! What a hunt!
Fantastic buck, especially with a longbow. Congratulations to your son.
Wow! And look at that smile.
Way to grind it out.
Congrats to your son.
Congratulation to your son on that fine buck. With a long bow adds to the enjoyment of a great hunt.
NICE buck, way cool... CONGRATS!
Excellent! Great buck and great looking bow. Can you give the set up details for a fellow one stringer?
Bittersweet I’d imagine. And a trad kill to boot. You trained him well !!!
I like that a lot! Nicely done.
Really great story all the way around!
Buck of a lifetime, congrats to your son.
Might have to mount that one...kidding, that is AWESOME!!!! Congrats young man!
What a dandy!
Congrats Young Fella,
Robb
Wow outstanding! Congrats
Beautiful buck and congratulations to your son.
Looks like a Bighorn Ramhunter Longbow, nice buck. Well done!
there won't be a better buck/bow story on this site this year.
Can you imagine how many booners are taken via long bow? In this day and age of Ravin financed politicians? How did your son get interested in hunting old school?
Congrats to your boy, That's a heck of a deer, and a longbow is just icing on that cake !
Wow! Amazing buck, fine hunt!
Great buck and and even greater experience. Congrats to you and your son!
That will be hard to top! Very impressive! Congratulations to you both.
Wow, that's a tank!
Gotta be the thrill of a lifetime for your Son, amazing feat with a longbow!
Wow! That's a beauty! Congrats to your son!
What a great buck... congrats. any info on the longbow itself?
Congrats on a great buck. I’d be interested in the total tally on both right antlers. While he seams a bit heavier this year it looks like he had more length last year. Awesome deer either year.
WOW... absolutely fantastic!
Congratulations!
I'm a longbow guy too and I was wondering if you could share any details (ex. - origins of the bow, poundage, arrow, etc.).
Congrats to him... fantastic buck!
That's awesome! Congrats to him!
Congrats, giant for sure!
Fantastic Buck!! Huge Congratulations!! And with Trad-gear!
What a toad!...and with a longbow!! Congrats to your son...going to hard to top that one!
Great hunt and reward, not very many young or old men would take the dedication to a longbow for a hunt now days, excellent.
I’m driving back home from TN right now. I’ll try to answer some more questions tonight. Blaine’s story is pretty interesting.
I’ll post some pics of the bow that he uses. I bought it off eBay or somewhere a few years ago.
Blaine also got into making his own heads. He found a lot of artifacts on my farm this year and decided to start making his own.
This buck he took with a zwickey though.
Damn, that’s a shame! Where do you go from there???
What an awesome buck! Would love to hear Blaine's story of the hunt.

Awesome buck.
Here is one of the heads he made. He started with the longbow this year and has already taken about 6 or 7 does with it. I lose track.

Beautiful bow and point work.
Blaine here.. Up until about 6 days ago, I was still hunting a nice mature 9 pointer that I would have been thrilled to have had an opportunity at. However, one of the evenings after finishing a hunt for the 9, I checked my cameras and noticed a large bodied and really large antlered deer out in daylight in front of one of our other spots. My dad (already being tagged out for the year, with two great bucks of his own) called me and was just as excited as I was, because we knew exactly what buck it was, and we hadn’t seen any pictures of him for over a month.. That night I washed all of my clothes and prepared my gear knowing that I might have a shot at the buck of a lifetime. The first night when I hunted him, he came out right at last light.. and worked into my effective range, well after legal light, so I got to sit and watch this magnificent buck feed past as the last glow in the sky quickly faded to black.. I sat in my stand for about an hour after dark in hopes that I could make a clean getaway without spooking any deer. That night, dad and I were discussing the wind and possible options but we both quickly decided that I needed to go right back to where I was the night before. I went in extra early and made sure to tip toe all the way to my stand to hopefully avoid alerting any bedded deer. Once I was settled in, the stage was set. The deer movement was much better as a whole this night, rather than the night before, and I saw a few mature bucks that I would have probably considered loosing an arrow on if I hadn’t seen the kind of beast that was lurking in this spot the night before... It was about 15 minutes before sunset and every deer in the field stopped what they were doing and began to stare in one direction, I followed suit. Sure enough, out steps the true buck of a lifetime. With my Osage longbow in hand, I held still, fixated on the beast that was standing 50 yards away, crunching on soy bean pods, gazing over the long shadowed field. He gave me a quick tail wag and began a slow march right down a well beaten game trail that goes right around the head of a ditch that just so happens to be 15 yards from where I am set up. I can feel my heart pounding in every inch of my body with every step he took. He rounded the head of the ditch and I knew the ball was finally in my court.. He came to a stop, looked the other way, I silently drew my string, concentrated on his lungs and watched my fletching disappear into his rib cage. He spun and took off barreling through some shrubbery and I heard him crash about 50 yards from where it all happened. In about 60 seconds, I heard zero movement and I knew the legendary 6x6 was down. Just like that, my entire season had completely changed.. And like MQQSE mentioned earlier, he was out of town when it all went down, which is a shame because he was so invested in this buck as well and he really goes above and beyond to make it possible to grow and hold whitetails of this caliber.
Thanks for telling the story Blaine! Congratulations again. Truly a once in a lifetime experience for most of us.
Great buck, way to get it done!
Awesome - congratulations!
What a buck ! That’s a super buck taken with any weapon, and really special to be taken with a longbow. Congrats to your son !
Congrats on a giant!!! Well done!
Congratulations, great story!
Great job!
I cant believe the handle "Arrowhead" was still around for a young buck like you Blaine. Great hunting season!
Fantastic! Great accomplishment young man! scentman
Just awesome and a cranker buck! Congratulations to you both! Merry Christmas!
Blaine, You learn to make arrowheads off YouTube videos or something? You ever try hunting with one of those? Your work looks amazing. I just can’t get over you committing to your longbow despite knowing a chance at the 180”+ was imminent. Nobody does this. You raised the bar.

Check your FB messenger. I sent you a bunch of pics from this year and years past. He would respond, but he’s out on the farm walking the creek for arrowheads now. He just sent me a pic of a nice buck that died in our creek. Hate to see it.
Here is one of the does he took. He killed it the same day he made the point.

This is the after effect from one of the does he killed. I was always curious how the points he finds broke. Well, here is a first hand example of a new one only making one flight.

Here is another victim. Honing his skill one doe at a time. I have 78 DMAP tags for the farm, but he gets unlimited archery doe tags as it is.

Look at the perfection in this one he found in the creek. These finds really fired him up about making his own.

I’ll end the photo dump here. I thought this one was cool. Here are the blades and points he found on the farm this spring. I found zero. Eyes are too old.

Any type of terrain he focuses on to find them?
Awesome buck and story to go with it! Congrats!
I am soooo jealous of those arrowheads he found> Awesome.

We focus on creeks and ditches leading into the main creek. It’s best after heavy rains once the water clears back up. Others find them in fields that have been tilled after a rain or two. We are mostly no till on our farm, so we don’t have any success there.
He is serious about this bow hunting thing !
I love it. Great thread. Grats on the season and the finds.
Great story, like all the details after the fact.
You guys are living the dream! Would love to see the story in TBM or similar magazine. Awesome, especially the old arrowhead finds and then knapping new heads and using them with good effect!
Holy cats! Congratulations on a great buck. Cool arrow heads!
