I was able to watch this buck bed Friday morning and get myself in range for a shot. He only went a short distance and expired.

I had noticed he had a limp, but it didn’t seem to lesson his bravado over the other 4 bucks in the group. It was fun to watch them fight each other before the stalk. Turns out he had a weird hoof.

He had zero body fat. I’m assuming this is because of his hoof and it being post rut.

Hey Jason, fun stuff those late season hunts. Most hunters are sitting in front of a fire with a hot toddy but you are out there after them. Nicely done.

Cool buck... congratulations.

Congrats. I have seen that type of hoof before in a deer. I don't know what causes it though.

I asked a biologist and my uncle-who is a lifelong farmer...both said he had too much corn in his diet. Makes sense as there is still standing corn fields in that area.

Congrats Jason! I read that EHD can cause hoof problems as well.

We did have EHD pretty bad in that area...and there was a smaller buck still in velvet in the group, so it definitely could be Ehd.

Looks like a very healthy deer even with the bad hoof.

I’d say the lack of fat pretty well blows the corn theory, and I know nothing about EHD, but congrats on your late aeason buck !

Congrats! Mild late fall/winter out there so far?

From: Milhouse

Congratulations Jason!

I doubt corn did that.... I can't believe it develops that fast. That happens over a long period of time, in my opinion. I've never seen it in deer (whitetails) that basically lived all winter long in unharvested corn fields.

Nice one!

Will you be incorporating that unique hoof into a mount?

From: No Mercy
15-Dec-21
Midwest-yes so far very mild.....((knock on wood)) Dana-I did save it but don't quite know what/how to do anything with it yet. Any ideas?

I shot a Mountain Goat with a similar type of hoof. Obviously not just related to corn.....

Congratulations on a fine deer My brother shot a buck in WI last year that had similar hoofs , Some people told me it was slipper hoof ( also said to many carbohydrates)
