Whitetail Deer

Our first bloodtrail game in 2022 is a very special one. The biggest buck I have ever seen in 40 years of hunting Connecticut is in front of me. I've killed big deer before, but never in my home state and this buck was literally a 1 in a million buck.
A new clue provided each day. Feel free to disagree without being an obnoxious jerk. I realize for a couple of you that's a tall order but try anyway. :-)
I would never have taken the photo above from that angle Pat. Howe ridiculously irresponsible. You should be ashamed of yourself for promoting such poor ethics.
Am I doing it right? :)
Close, you forgot: "I'm done with this stupid game"
Were the photos used in the Question pulled from a video or did you take them with a camera? I'd never have the wherewithal to pass up shooting him immediately to take a few photos and risk spooking him :)
I whiffed on the softball. This thing is rigged!
Nick, the first few clue pics are from the video camera footage. It looks grainy because I had the camera on wide angle and cropped it for the photos. I wasn't about to blow this by screwing around with my camera. Clue's 4-8 are all taken with my SLR.
every pic was basically the same angle and the near side leg is back on every one. And there were some obstructions . not a good start for myself here but happy to be participating in another challenge!
Pat, I noticed you handed Connecticut 9 points...nice work, lol !
It's been awhile! I thought the blood trails had been cancelled like everything else in this world. :)
Looking forward to it!
Buckeye did you pick B like I did? :-) I started off with a goose egg.
B, the only shot without a limb in the way is a big old goose egg.
Agree with above. Only shot without a limb in the way is B
I can’t tell from any of the angles…..all the pictures are upright. We need some sideways please. ;)
Ok guys, it's not a limb! It's a tiny twig with plenty of room around it. LOL. That said, I would have shot long before the correct answer.
There is no way I would ever take A,B,C, or D shot. Your unethical if you do!! Am I playing the game correct?
Scored a 9 with my unethical shot. lol
A

not giving up my "wrong answer" . don't want any spoilers here! ... JohnMc... whoa !,,
He didn't ask which was the best shot, he asked which was the best angle. :)
John, I think you got a good one of my ex sister-in-law in that lineup! I won't say which one;)
Swing and a miss... since we only had 4 options I, like several others went with B.
Had there been space for write-in, I'd have gone E none of the above.
1st pic is making me sweat really bad glad there are a 2 3 and 4 but either way had I been drawn and he was inside of 20 I would have killed him right there. I get that's not the question but never the less. 2 nd pic remains similar in angle. Angle of the spine to horizon places front of the spine lower than rear which tells me angling towards.
3 and 4 are really similar near side leg is back on both but after a long look I chose 4. It just looked better to me
I’m done with this stupid game! :-(
These blood trail challenges are like applying for tags in western states. They suck you in, give you some false hope, then dash them on the rocks with some irrational twist to the rules or technicality midstream, that totally defies common sense.
Ah hell Troy, tell us what you really think ! ;-)
I was just about to give this site up and join a crossbow forum. I ain’t leaving now until I ace this sucker !
If you can't hit the killzone without hitting the branch I know where you can pick up a shotgun for next season!
"Ok guys, it's not a limb! It's a tiny twig with plenty of room around it. LOL."
You must not golf. Trees are 90% air but it seems you hit the 10% every time. ;-)
Its not if I cant make a shot around the twig.... I'm taking that shot all day long in real life. Its if the "game" thinks that shot is ethical with an obstacle in the way. That's what I based my answer on.
It's actually a relief to miss the first question. Now I can relax and enjoy the rest of the challenge.
I picked B too. The answer didn’t say the correct one did it. A? The question said best angle for a shooting OPPORTUNITY. I try never to take a shot when he is looking straight at me. So D would be my second choice. What the right answer
Jeez guys, some of you are obviously not experienced bait pile hunters. The best angle is ALWAYS when the animal has his face buried in the pile. ;-)
The real question is, what is Pat's secret bait pile mix that made a CT buck grow so abnormally big. :-)
Matt. (aka: obnoxious jerk).
Well that was kind of a no-brainer.
I always say that when I guess right. Makes me feel superior.
You got one answer right Matt
HINT.....think back over the last 15 or 20 Bloodtrail trail challenges. Pat frequently makes mention of what his favorite shot angle is. Doesn't mean that it is always correct, but this IS Pat's challenge, so guess accordingly. EVEN BIGGER HINT.....go back and watch his first ever successful elk bowhunt.
Jake, was that elk hunt DIY?!
That scrawny skeleton is the best buck you have ever seen in CT? Why bother even hunting there? ;)
I scored a 9 on the first question. As I was exiting the question, the screen started flashing saying that I was the lucky winner of a hunt at Pat’s Ohio farm. It’s the least he can do for putting us through this every year.
I'll say it again... what was the "question". Was Pat asking you which "shot" to take? Or, was he asking you which "angle" was best?
Unless you are shooting rubber suction cup arrows out of a Bear Panda bow any of those pictures should easily result in a dead buck, but the best angle is clearly D. The worst angle would still be a chip shot and dream opportunity for most hunters.
I picked "B" because there was no twig in the way and the leg was the least far back. This game sucks, I'm out, until the next clue.
#2 is a trick question. You'll need an iron will to focus on the best answer.
18 points, I might quit while I'm ahead. I always over think these dang challenges.
Second question I would have shot where there was no dot, so I picked the best option and goose egged it!
Elevation of B, windage of D.
Remember, it’s the “aiming point”….. not where you want Pat’s arrow to hit. He torques his bow and grips the heck out of it. So his arrow doesn’t go where his aiming point is. ;)
I know my answers are right so the score I get is actually Pat's score. So far he's doing good :^)
After entering your choice it says "answer" however it's not showing the answer, only the points you received? I agree with others that question 1 does not have the right answer for several reasons that I could provide, but it would give others the right wrong answer that sucks and should never be taken unless you're blind and very stupid and would kiss you sister with an open mouth and tell all friends you did it.
For question #2 … not thrilled with any of the choices. In the middle of A B and D is where I’d aim. We should also know what arrow is at play here. A 500 grain fixed blade guy would not be afraid to crowd the shoulder.
Did people actually miss question #2?!?!
Hm? I can choose guts, the spine (will probably miss anyways as that sucker ducks the string), straight bone, or a kill shot right through the heart with plenty of space for operator error. . . . I'd probably actually aim just a bit below the correct answer here.
Well, the arrow hit almost exactly halfway between B and D.....
I answered angle D, on question 1, but B was the only angle without limbs in the way
On clue #3, I would wait about as much time as it took me to lower my bow and pack to the ground and get down myself.
Number three was the easiest so far if you’ve played this game before.
Number 3 was a gimmee! Still don't like number 1;)
Great shot. Even though I got the answer correct. I would have climbed down in 5 seconds and been on the phone with my taxidermist as I walked up to him. (60 yards away) LOL Congratulations
Blew it on #3 I figured Pat saw it fall over so I went with the 2nd choice
IF you've done these before, #3 is a slam dunk.
Besides, it's going to take the long to get the passed through arrow out of that tree!
No way am I waiting 6 hours to trail that deer!!!
One of the next few questions will be "How far did he run after the shot"? ....and the choices will be 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards....so get your coin ready to toss. LOL
After all these blood trail challenges I still can’t figure out why they aren’t like real life scenarios….. I mean, where is the Xmas gnome? Where is the blood splatter with the compass pointing the wrong way? Why aren’t we getting out of the tree after 1 minute on that shot? Real life…..
Jake, I fear you are right and I have a poor record with those because it is literally a coin toss !
First off are we really suppose to believe someone killed a deer in CT? I think we all have followed enough live CT hunts to know that did not happen. ;)
Doesn't matter that I missed #3, cuz the real answer of "No Wait at all, he's stuck to the tree" wasn't an option..... LMAO!!
Was doing good until today….
By the time I texted my buddies and and lowered my bow, I figured 15 minutes would be more than enough!
Apparently it took Pat longer to pack up the camera gear…. :).
After the ”Dances With Turkeys" episode, Pat waits a looong time before putting his hands on a “dead” animal.
When contemplating wait times on these things don't forget time for B roll, whoops, I mean "recreates".
I'd be packing up as soon as I hung my bow. Dead deer running.
I SCREWED UP ON 1 . I WAS WAITING FOR THAT FRONT LEG TO MOVE FORWARD ? NEVER HAPPEND .
I just ended my 65th year of bowhunting (yes, I actually started in 1956). #3 question. Regardless of what the answeres were I "always"wait a minimum of 30 min "even" when I know/think the critter died in less time. I guess I have been on at least 300+ bloodtrails on several different animals of my own & friends. I've seen a few surprises at the end of some of them too. Example-I shot a 4x3 Elk, double lung, pass thru onto the ground. I could see the blood trail for nearly 100 yds. I sat down to gather myself from the excitement. I knew he was dead. It was at least 30 min. b/4 I started my walk to him. No looking for bloos, it was coming out both sides & abundant. I could not believe he had gone that far. I topped a little rise & there he was. This is at least 150 yds from the initial hit. I get like 30 yds from him & he gets up".. I about chit. I knocked another arrow & again, duble lungs, pass thru. He went a few yds & was done.. This Elk had absolutly no blood left in his body. Still alive after all this. I had similar happen on a wild Hog too & he managed to charge me, dead on his feet an hour after the initial hit.
I assumed that the deer was not dead in sight when I answered question 3.
My "How Far, How Long Challenge" a few months ago proved that first impressions, based solely on shot location, are often wrong. My pics showed that I double-lunged my buck at 25 yards. The vast majority, here, guessed that he bolted 50-100 yards, and died in seconds. In reality, he bounded only 7 yards, but took an hour to die within sight. Had I not been able to see him from my stand, I would have picked up the trail in under 30 minutes, and would have surely bumped him at least once, maybe more.
That's what's so comical about these blood trail challenges. There are no definitive right or wrong answers, but only Pat's answers score.
Matt
I picked B because the leg is the least back, and would have no problem shooting what looks like to me a deer walking. And agree with Peco, this game sucks. LOL
Haha! Totally wiffed #4 My trigger finger kept hovering over the correct answer, but then I thought, that can't be.
The writer is a sadistic jackass.....
Pat had the wrong answer for #4. I have 100%, he has 75%. I’m flipping the script here! :)
I’m going back to the trucker thread…. GG, I’ll meet you there.
Question 4 is very debatable and my answer of chest hair is far from inaccurate, to say absolutly nothing is not true, 1. I learned the arrow is stuck in tree
2. There is chest hair on the arrow .
3. Cant feel the arrow but if its not greasy its a dead deet
No one knows the unknowns. GG could be your mulie took so long to die because he was just standing there. Had you got down and move him he may have died faster. You can't assume doom and gloom. But I hear what you're saying. All I'm saying is there isn't necessarily ONLY one right answer.
SEE!! I told you he was stuck to the tree..... Full credit for #3 please! ;-)
Definitely chest hairand blood, that arrow told me something not absolutely nothing. Just saying. Should get some points not a goose egg
The blood did show it was not from the lungs (lack of air bubbles). Chest hair??????? hard to tell from an exit hole but not white hair from the lower hide and a lower exit hit. Correct answer, Nothing???? I disagree. Yep, back to the trucker post.
swampbuck, thought same thing...checked in here to see comments first, thanks!
How often do you NOT check the arrow for brown hair?? Might not mean much but It is information!
agree with swampbuck, there are definite clues. looks like chest hair, exit wound should be lower on the chest than entry, shooting down. Not all WT chest hair is white. No 0 for this one if fair ?... ;)
Another thing is the blood is bright red and yeah, not foamy. Its arterial blood, and if its dripping down the tree just from the arrow passing through, it tells me it hit a major artery or the heart ventrical leading out through the aorta itself. Good volume of blood and a decent size exit wound to allow that much blood to be carried oht with the arrow at that velocity. The arrow also tells me that little or no bone was struck ar the arrow passed through or there might be some damage to the BH. There are plenty of clues here, just maybe not the ones you listed as answers, but I still think its chest hair.
That’s for sure chest hair pat..new clue you should of learned from arrow is where your exit was
I have to agree with those that say it is chest hair on that arrow, but what do I know ?
Have to read the question carefully
Glunt is right. Pat is the master at wording the questions. He asked what "NEW" information you could get. You already know it's lung blood and you already know it's chest hair and by the shot you know there isn't gut on the arrow. That being said, I did the same crap you guys did. Big fat zero.
Wayne, I knew Pat was devious, but this is downright ridiculous ! :-)
I’m sure he would have loved to see my expression when it dawned on me.
Yeah, I know he just does these for his own entertainment.
JohnMC, You took the words out of my mouth.
i missed it.
to me D is not right technically right. any information provides some learning.......or validation.
if nothing else we learned that the arrow was a pass through. That was not obvious (though assumed) from the prior pictures the game players had. it may have been confirmed from the hunter without examining the arrow if he saw it from the tree which likely did with the lighted nock, but the game players did not get that info in the first three questions.
the hair may have told us nothing, the blood nothing, the matter on shaft nothing, but the arrow in the tree confirmed the arrow was not still in the deer and never stopped in the deer and came out.
fun game and nice deer. there are not enough of these. we should replace the live hunt forum which is dead end city and let people post their own blood trail challenges. it would be a big hit.
No bubbles in the blood, so not from the lung. From the shot location you know no other organs were involved. Thus it is blood from muscle.
Ha well hell my thought was He had no idea where his exit was..we all agree arrows do dumb stuff sometimes when they hit bone… the hair on the broadhead is from the exit …
I made the fatal mistake of getting too cocky after getting 9's on the first 3 questions.................. : (
It looks like that fixed blade head held up well against that hard wood tree. I. would love to see what a mechanical would have looked like. Haha.
Matt
Going back to the question of how long to wait...Always wait 30 minutes! I started to get down too early last year when I saw the buck die within sight. Just started to get down and looked over my shoulder to see a bigger buck coming down the trail to fill tag 2. That is why you always wait 30 minutes. :)
I did not answer question 4 yet. I didn't see the correct option in the menu. What I saw was an arrow that had obviously passed threw a deer. There was hair that did not look like belly hair. The arrow did not look like a gut hit but I couldn't smell it myself. I will guess at some point keeping the author's way of seeing things in mind.
question 3 - unless you inspect the arrow and see the deer's reaction, there's no way you can say with any confidence, how long you should wait based upon the picture provided. I can post a picture of the last buck I shot and the entry wound was perfect, except it hit the shoulder blade and deflected into the stomach. I got the question correct, but I learned entry wound does not always represent a good shot.
Don't we already know what direction the deer is traveling on these blood trails? I have never not known. The blood splatter questions always get me. There has always also been hoof prints. Just look at the hoof prints.
I thought everyone would have gotten question 4 right. I simply looked and learned nothing new. I must be a genius:)
Big blob to little blob is the direction. 3 for 5
I suck at this one. Holy moly! LOL.
I hate the blood spatter questions. I will admit that I haven't killed much stuff, but I've never tried to analyze blood splatter, as there is usually some more blood to indicate the direction of travel :)
Well the correct answer is so obvious I thought it was a trick, so picked the only other possibility. But he did give another word clue , similar to #4.
I hope Pat gets a double header on turkeys and they both beat the crap out of him!!
I bet Dexter gets a 9 on the blood splatter question.
JohnMC's Link
A link in case you were wondering if splatter or spatter was correct. I will go with spatter as Pat used since is it was a fixed head. Had it been a mechanically head it likely would have been splatter.
I thought #4 was the easiest question so far...
Goose egg on #4. Over thunked myself again.
I got the blood spatter right but it was looking like a NE direction IMO.
Slate, I used those pics from Finding Wounded Deer by John Trout, Jr. in a previous challenge and I got it wrong. Used my own reasoning this time and scored a 9.
looked like NE would have been the best choice. too much fun. Thanks.
The blood spatter can be tricky, but if you really zone in on some obvious things in the photo, its pretty easy to see the direction. I don't want to be a spoiler, but there are several things that make this one easier than some of the past blood trail games IMO.
Yeah, it was obvious (at least to my feeble mind) that it was either a northerly or southerly direction but was still hard to narrow down.
Next time I kill a deer I am going to analyze the blood splatter/spatter while tracking.
I had a perfect score until the blood spatter.
i totally agree with SLATE. booooo
Also totally agree with SLATE. His pic shows it well.
Slates picture doesn’t show it but how do you explain the small drops of blood on a leaves on the other side of the log? Window in and you will see them. Also, how can Pat be wrong with his answer? He has the bigger picture and knows the direction the deer went.
The assumption that blood only drips straight down from a running, lung shot deer is simply wrong.
I totally agree Boreal, but to me there are other clues as to the direction and where the blood is located on the face of that upper log. Also there is no blood on the log on the right side of the photo or to the right of the rock to indicate the deer went the direction indicated by Slate. It is tough just looking at a snapshot.
Nice Dennis lol. It’s all good fun
That corn pile is bigger than that buck…
I thought NE was the better choice but hard to figure with a running double lung, and possibly heart, shot deer.
I guessed wrong on #5 because I assumed the pic was rotated…….
Question 1 - all of the pictures show the buck's near side leg back, resulting in the shoulder blade coming into play on the shot. I always try to shoot with the near side leg forward to reduce the odds of this happening. Just my 2 cents for new hunters.
Slate - that’s westbound blood coming out of a northbound deer.
I took a guess on #6 more or less. Thought I saw a light spot? I was looking up ahead, guess I would have tripped over the buck. Like they say, " if it was a snake it would have bit me"!
"I guessed wrong on #5 because I assumed the pic was rotated……."
That's very obvious to the observant.
First note the time of day and where the shadows are. Then the time of year and the fall's prevalent weather norm. The supposed "south" side of the log is damp and doesn't correspond to the moss growing on the north side of the trees. The real smoking gun is at the time, on the day Pat shot the buck there was a brisk breeze that ruffled up the leaves, lifting the windward side. The telltale shadow of the photographer is also casting to the wrong direction, as is the barely perceptible boot print. And for any doubters after all that evidence, check out where the caterpillar is taking shelter and how much fur he has.
Shouldn't even have to mention the whip-poor-will nestled down which is always beak into the wind.
There's Fauci written all over this one.
EDIT: the answer to #6 also proves the facts presented above ;)
Tobywon, Look again. There is blood on the rock.
#6 took awhile. Didn't think there was a deer in the pic.
Ambush, you are full of prunes ! (but it makes for interesting reading)
Bowbender, there wasn’t, just an out of focus tuft of belly hair……..maybe……
the hair could have been a house cat, stray dog, easter bunny, old man who fell down, etc
Drycreek, you can just say "sh!t" if you want. It's cool :)
Slate - that’s westbound blood coming out of a northbound deer.
I guess so because I was wrong. This is what happens when you analyze stuff to long.
Slate, its actually spattering the same direction as the upper drops but it hit below the center of the logs curve.
ABC or D on the blood splatter direct dont mean squat if you shot him with a 20-30mph cross wind...that can happen in Oklahoma
Question 6: "You must look ahead" Photo D appears to be looking ahead and not 2, 3, or 4 steps ahead.
#6 too easy, it's obviously one of the four...look for the buzzard beak....
Number 6 was just mean ;)
Not a chance you where going to get me on 6 Pat. Sneaky.
Was Mr. Magoo tracking this buck?
Matt
There is a hint for#7 over on the ‘join Illuminati’ thread. You have to phone in.
Bake, you are so right. ;-)
^^^WTF…..Do they accept collect calls?
BTW….coincidentally, your “handle” is the exact same response that I have to about half the answers to this blood trail challenge…
These "challenges" remind me of my high school dating, where a couple of good moves gets you to second base so then you get over confident and rush things so the entire experience ends in disaster.
Yeah Pat, but some of your “clues” are down right hilarious !
#6. I knew the answer would not be in the center of the picture, so it was either A or D. I choose D. Nope!
"You guys are funny." Post up question 7 so we can provide more laughs.
Ha! Feeling generous on question 7?? Maybe more like “sorry for you losers”. This thing has been a cluster…
i should get credit for chest hit cause it was double lung and the photo not fair neither c no way look like a chest in pick. Cheater!!
Don’t fret guys, the last clue/question is gonna “be really hard” ………..not tricky, devious, sly, cunning, underhanded, conniving, or downright evil (pronounced E-vill)……but really hard. Well, yabba dabba do !
Didn't think there was a way it hit the heart, but I just couldn't make out the exit hole on my phone. Better luck next time!
The next question which is being advertised as being very hard will be what did this buck score within 1/16 of an inch
This challenge is about as close to textbook as any that have ever been posted before.
In fairrness, i could not for sure tell where exit was either. Old tired eyes. I "thought" it was veery low & said heart n Double lungs.. If I had taken the other "it may be exit" I would have said double. Regardless, great shot.
That arrow went just over the heart - perfect placement for cutting the esophagus and pulmonary vein. Also - the deer was at the bait when it was shot - are you guys thinking what I’m thinking?
Peas in arteries?
Where on God’s green earth is the last question ? I’m ready to humiliate myself !
Pat is probably going to make us 1.) guess the age of deer (pending results from Deerage.com) to the nearest WEEK. OR 2.) Estimate how far the deer traveled after the shot (to the nearest CENTIMETER....(one must use metric these days) OR 3.) Guess the NET green score of the buck (using gross score as a tie breaker) OR estimate the LIVE weight of the buck, even though he gutted it before he dragged it out....and don't forget, it'll be in kilograms.
'......and aortic vein.' !!!! Whatthefoc is that? Huh? Wow.
Well Jake, you probably know him as well as anyone on here……….nothing he comes up with will surprise me.
So Pat what did that stud of a buck score?
Never mind how much it scored what did it weigh? How old was it?
Awesome! Both the video and your expression in your trophy photo capture the experience perfectly. Congrats on a true NE giant! Where will rank amongst your bowhunting favorites?
I agree with you Pat. If you don't feel some sort of regret or sadness, you might be missing something? I feel the same way, quite often. It mostly comes from age, and what stage we are in as a hunter, but that regret is likely a result of knowing you cannot rewind the clock, and repeat that exact moment. You're lucky enough to have it on video. Great deer. Your comment is very ironic in respect to your 41 years in Connecticut and not seeing one better. This is my 41st year of hunting here in Wisconsin, and I have in fact seen bigger deer, but got my personal best. I also felt a sense of sadness. Well done.
Aside from congratulations, which I think I’ve already expressed, I’ll bet money when that sucker looked right up into your eyes……you peed just a little. ;-)
First time ever with a perfect score!!!!
Well done Pat! Congratulations, he’s a beautiful buck. Great to get closure on a deer that you have some history following. Many times they just disappear and you have no idea what their fate was. Never had one run into a tree that I recall although it appears to be effective and makes a short tracking job. He couldn’t have gone much further. I’m ashamed of my score but it’s always fun to play along.
Great video, awesome shot too! Not many things as satisfying as a perfectly placed arrow and an animal down in sight within seconds. I can relate to the commentary at the end of the video and anyone that's hunted the same animal for a few years will too. Congrats, Pat, that was nice.
Congrats on the great buck! Why don't you ever put yours on the meatpole?
Fun game, I wish there were more of them!
The question of the min time to wait is BS, 15 min is a better answer especially since the deer hit the ground in sight which is often the case for a shot like that. Even after 5 minutes that deer didn't have any air left in him.
Congratulations, awesome buck and nice shot!
Thanks for the adventure Pat and congrats on an awesome buck.
Didn't seem like it went 100 yards...
I agree mrelite........deer was dead in seconds. I ain't waiting, but hey, the game was fun!!
The game is fun……but not realistic or teaching for new hunters…..and definitely nothing to gain if you’re an experienced hunter. Can we do the next game on the snow? Can’t mess that one up.
I must be one of the few who think like Pat. This was the easiest one yet. The rest of you could use a little more experience....... ;-)
Clue 7 proves that 23.2% of bowhunters don't know where the heart is located on a whitetail.
I went with my second choice on question 8. Telephoto lenses make distance judgement difficult . There is no way I would have been able to stay in that tree for thirty minutes . I have only myself to blame for wrong answers.
I demand my answer to question 3 be rescored to a 9!
Congrats on a great buck Pat.
Congrats on a great buck Pat. As for the challenge, it's always a trap...except for when it isn't.
well that was fun i would feel better if i got them all right. I miss photo to find deer in pic and the arrow stuck in the tree which i think we should get credit for if we chose hit in chest. LOL Great buck though!
Always enjoy the bloodtrail challenges thx again for putting them together Pat and congrats on a great buck!
Great Vid, shot and commentary! My buck did the same thing this year...got wobbly legged about 40 yards out and at 60, ran head first into a 3' wide cottonwood! Bark exploded everywhere. Put him down for the count!
Pat: Absolute perfect shot on a special deer. Congrats on the wall hanger. I couldn't have passed up on the first one!! Good job.
Great video and shot on a great buck! It takes a lot of vision to have a blood trail contest on a buck that doesn't need to be trailed!
I personally think these are always enteraining, and do offer knowledge to learn from. As mentioned above- 23% of those responding think that shot hit the heart- which means the other million plus bowhunters not on this site could use "quizzes" like this more than we can imagine.... I would have thought the knowledge base on our members would be stronger than that stat makes it appear.
Congrats Pat- great shot on a great deer!
Remember what Pat said boys...........................don't take this TOO seriously! : )
For those of you that got a perfect score I would suggest you either a) play the lottery or b) get your head examined(as you are thinking TOO much like Pat! ;-)
My big question is actually............................................................ why are we even doing a bloodtrail "challenge" on an animal that ran less than 50y and dropped within sight???!!! That's kinda like doing an autopsy on a train wreck victim! ;-)
Was the train wreck victim blunt force trauma or blood loss Perry? Hahahaha
Cause of death: Blunt-force trauma to the head, hitting the tree. :)
First two questions I am filing a formal protest. The best shot angle was D no branch over vitals and he was heading to the bait anyway and was already back to being relaxed after staring at Pat’s mug. As for shot placement I did not like any of them this is where I aim on broadside. I could not make out the splatter well enough to determine if he was heading up pic or down pic - so I figured more blood would be dripping out of exit hole which should have him running down pic. Waaaaaaaaaaaaa! I am so very butt hurt
I would like to measure the actual ground it covered. 40 seemed obvious but it ran for at least six seconds so i figured a quick 100
Jack - I always aim at the bottom third of the deer's body as most jump the string and drop down at the sound of the string releasing the arrow. I agree with all other comments you made and I know the question the best ANGLE and not the best shot, but when you're asking hunters for the best shot to take we tend to take ALL things into consideration. The only things we don't consider is a trick question. It was fun.
Reading some of the comments on how to make this a different test and teaching experience - how about we do a challenge on a hunt that went wrong. Big buck walks in, we see wind direction, the height of the treestand, our movement as the deer is near us, etc. That would be really fun, right?
Jack: I can assure you “management” is carefully reviewing your concerns and will get back to you with a response in a timely manner.
4 and 7 were the only ones I got wrong kind of trick questions in sense because with a lighted nock if you didn’t see it was a chest shot and the the grey hair on arrow then thats pretty bad. As for the belly hair given a hint as to always look ahead,in that picture you are standing on the deer,Just saying but always fun to play.
Meant to say question 4 and 6.
