Last year a buddy helped me toss out a bear bait about 150 yards from a shallow spot on a creek where bears like to cross. We installed a bait barrel and a couple trail cameras on opposite sides of the barrel. I use a hanging stink bait that would gag a maggot: bears can smell those bad boys for miles and if it spills on your clothes you’ll be burning them. I asked my pal to run a light trail of used fryer oil to the creek crossing while I “activated the stinky”. One of the cameras caught him returning and we left the area shortly after the pic was taken. The second photo shows the first bear of the year arriving at the buffet less than 3/4 of an hour later and there was multiple diners there within 24 hours. I will try to document how long it takes for all my baits to get hit this year, should be interesting.

Are most your bear bait in same spot year after year? Does a new spot usually take longer to start having activity? Or in other words do bears remember where the bait sites were in years past and automatically come back there once they leave their dens?

Yes they do remember where they are. That spot hadn’t been baited in 2 years. Even my brand new baits are usually hit very quick but they are set in good areas where bear traffic is evident or highly likely. The stinkies work great. Not nice to fly with them in a floatplane though.

I’ve on multiple occasions as I’m sure you have as well had bears at the barrels before I baited them.

What kind of attractant do you use to gag a maggot.
