It will hurt by nothing like chasing my kids ball games 5-6 nights a week. Most of the away games are 50-70 miles one direction. In a suburban that adds up quick. I pull up to the pump several times a week and get shut off at $100 with a tank that’s not full. Let’s Go Brandon

I have been running all over the upper Midwest fishing so far this spring. Not having to pull my boat during hunting season = saving money by going hunting.
I would think Senile Joe and his groupies will realize that the Nov elections won't be far off by than and try and get it down to under 4 dollars a gallon. The sad thing is people will think they are getting a deal!! I paid 5.79 for diesel today and thought pretty good, than I thought I am an idiot thinking that is pretty good!! Every time I fill up it’s the same sick gut feeling after getting kicked in the sack! I was close to E the other day and the pump didn’t stop at that $100 mark. $149.00 to fill my truck! The sticker was already on the pump but dam is it accurate.
It will not affect me whether or not I head out west. The high prices we are experiencing though are most likely here to stay - not fuel - but everything else.

It would not affect me if I had an elk tag. I would figure a way to make it work. That being said....I had planned on taking my whole family west, stopping in WY to allow my girls to shoot a couple of antelope and hitting many of the tourist spots both ways. The issue with this is feeding 4 mouths, fuel and a motel/B&B at every stop for 10+ days. Its cheap to drive out and sleep in the truck during the drive and in a tent during the hunt compared to all of that. Probably going to be a trip to the beach for the family this year instead.
It’s hitting pretty hard. With a weakening dollar and interest rates on the rise, work opportunities are becoming less. Still plenty of people calling and plenty to bid commercially. However, the pricing cost is halting all the opportunities for jobs that bank money. It’s getting more lean everyday too.

^ my dad and I pulled into Copper Mtn. to fuel up years ago when fuel was high. We didn't even think about fuel prices. We just filled up when we needed to. As I was filling up I just happen to notice that I was filling up with $5.25 diesel. When dad came out of the convenient store I said "hey dad, look at the price of this fuel". He liked to passed out. I am not sure I want to know what diesel is up there now.

Why middle class Americans continue to drive oversized vehicles when they don't have to tow/offroad/work/etc, ie: when going to the grocery store or to the kid's ball games, is just a continual amazement for me and makes me SMH.
You can have a 4x4 truck or a 4x4 truck plus a car that gets 40 mpg for the same cost. It's just up to you whether or not you want to put pointless miles on your expensive truck when you don't have to.
I've put nearly 750K miles on Honda Civics over the past 2 decades while having a 4x4 truck and it's saved me 10s of thousands of dollars.
There are ways to save a lot of money. The way listed above requires swallowing some pride, but it's rewarded by laughing all the way to the bank.
Let's make sure we all get out and vote for Democrats in November so we can see more of the same. Higher gas, higher inflation, food shortages, and war. Need I go on?

Dano, I didn’t say anything about electric cars. But you have the option of driving whatever you want. You just have to pay for it. I was just explaining how I’ve saved 10s of thousands of dollars over 20 years by not taking my v10 to the grocery store.
So I have a question: if having a gas-efficient car means you only drive your truck once a year, does that mean you only hunt once per year? That sounds horrible.

I'm in Idyll's camp on this one. My daily driver gets 52 mpg. That said, I can't imagine gas prices will impact any of the hunts I've lined up for this fall. The gas, and likely everything else, will just cost more than it used to.
Yep. The wife drives a small SUV and my daily driver is a little Kia Optima. Gets about double what my truck does on MPG. Truck gets plenty of use too but try to keep miles on the KIA as much as possible.
So we should all go out and trade in our trucks and/or by a separate “grocery” getter? Where are we getting that cash for a Civic?

I used to commute 100 miles round trip every weekday. In 1990 I bought a brand new Geo Metro for $5500 and it got 52mpg. The payment, insurance and monthly fuel was cheaper than the fuel alone that I was burning in my 4x4 pickup. It was basically a free car and I saved a lot of wear and tear on my truck. After I wore the first Geo out I bought another one. It was very cheap transportation but after driving them for about 15 years I couldn't take it anymore and I bought a BMW for my commuter.
The cost of diesel won't stop me from elk hunting in Wyoming this year but it does have me considering leaving the 30' toyhauler camper at home...

Last week in Wyoming/west side, gas $4.52--low grade/87 and Diesel was $5.49.
Here back home it's $4.34 @ Sam's Club/No diesel sales there and $4.56 gas/$5.39 Deisel @ Maverick.
Both my Jeep's are gas/87 and getting right at 16--18 mpg's...
I do everything in 1 big morning daily loop, gym, hike, misc like Lowe's or groceries ect. shopping stops if need be and then home.....no more 2-3 trips a day for misc stuff.

I live 2 miles from my job. My gf works from home. My truck is a 2.6 Ecoboost so not terrible on gas. My gf has a Hyundai that sits in the garage most of the time. Makes no financial sense for me to have a 2nd "economy" vehicle to pay for, insure, and maintain.
A few weeks ago I drove to DIA, up to Dillon, CO, and back home. 300 miles.
I decided before I left that I wouldnt drive over 70mph, just to see what kind of mileage I would get on my 2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 [I was amazed how many people were flying by me]
Just by keeping my foot out of the gas, I got 19.1 mpg. and Im ok with that.
So there are ways to help offset the high fuel prices
Ike I would love to fit my family of 6 into a Honda Civic instead of an SUV, it just isn’t realistic. Even if there was a middle seat in the front like cars use to have there’s no room when you add a car seat or two. We have a car that we drive if ever one of us is not able to go but that’s rare. Most people I see driving SUVs to ball games aren’t doing it so there 2 children have plenty of room.
Gas, groceries, equipment, tags, licenses, and everything else....it all costs significantly more. Yet I see more people traveling, more applicants in the draws, more hunters at the trailheads, less stock and more shoppers at the stores. Sounds like things are priced right if you believe in capitalism, people keep buying, going, doing price be damned. Regardless of who is in charge, if the demand is there, the prices will be too.
Thankfully I’m in a situation in life where I can afford to do pretty much whatever I want to do.
I feel bad for the lower income folks that are struggling with these high prices for fuel. High fuel prices cost me in my small company almost an extra $1000 a month
cnelk x2... my 2019 GMC Sierra 6.2 ---- if I can keep it at 60 or under (most county roads I drive are 55mph) I can get right at 22mpg -- I'm happy with that.
Getting up to the 70mph drops me to about 17 - 18 mpg, still not bad.
Like Robb, I no longer make unnecessary trips like I used to - I combine what used to be a few trips into one.
I have been putting E85 so far this summer at 2.68 a gallon. Just trying to weather the storm.
I bought my diesel for $2.89 and filled a 1000 gallon tank up before the cluster. That’s enough fuel for my farm for quite a while. Only regret is not buying another fuel tank
I bet there are a lot of people that were living paycheck to paycheck due to bad decision making that are suffering greatly right now. I also be there were a lot of people who weren't living paycheck to paycheck who are now.
My discretionary spending has definitely been reduced as I'm sure it has for many others. The trickle down affect of that spending reduction will hurt a lot of small business.
I’m liking my 20 Alumi-Duty…17-18 around town and a easy 21-23 on Hwy at 71Mph…Like everyone, just cut out the un-needed trips…I think this weekend will be the tell all as far as travel goes…People are still being people and the coffee lines are still long! I know I need my Dutch when in town…
I drive about 15000 miles per year. I would be lucky to save $1000/year (assuming 10,000 car/5,000 truck miles) by also having a small commuter that averaged 28 mpg. That doesn't include the additional cost of insuring/licensing/paying for/maintaining/etc. of another vehicle. I don't know how I would save 10s of thousands of dollars.

These vehicles pay for themselves if you do any significant amount of driving. My last Civic cost $13,130. I just sold it for $2000 with $350K+ miles on it. Original clutch. One set of rear breaks, two sets of front breaks. 3 timing belts/water pumps. Besides that, just gas and tires. It saved me 10s of thousands of dollars over putting 350K miles on a truck. And that’s just one of the 3 civics I’ve had over the past 24 years. They more than pay for themselves.
And I currently own two trucks. A Tacoma and a V10 Dodge 2500.
I use whatever one I need for the job I’m doing, which is usually not towing or off-roading.

You do need a large vehicle for your family. But every time it’s just you, your wife, or the two of you, you’re wasting money.
And the “I can’t afford a Civic because I have a truck” logic falls flat when you make your truck (which costs 2+ times what a civic does out the door and then again 2+ times what a civic does to fuel, fix, and maintain) last two to three times as long as you otherwise would when you’re not taking it to the office/little league/grocery store/etc.
The fact of the matter is that people just want to drive more vehicle than they need. And that’s your choice. But you’re throwing away an incredible amount of money over the years, the more you drive.
At 6’5” and 260#, you won’t find me in a Honda Civic. I’d rather pay the higher fuel prices and be comfortable in my pickup.

I just did some simple math. It would personally cost me significantly more to own two vehicles than just my Suburban with my typical driving patterns. Like I said, I drive about 15,000 miles per year. If I split it 10,000 on a Civic and 5,000 on my Suburban, I'd save just under $300 per year assuming $3.50/gallon gas (I know, different now, but 3.50 might be high over the last 10 years). That doesn't include the price of the Civic which makes the combo way more expensive than the Suburban alone.
Now, is the Suburban more vehicle than I need? Now, probably. But I bought it when I had three boys at home. It was a family vehicle replacement for a pickup and van. I gave the pickup to my oldest son, sold the van with 200,000 plus miles. I need a vehicle that can tow my fishing boat, and work as a truck on hunting trips. I could definitely get by with something less now. I don't need the family roominess, and my boat is not huge. A vehicle that can tow 3000 pounds would work. Was thinking a smaller SUV or a small pickup. Honestly, wouldn't mind a diesel half ton. Yes I know fuel costs more, but I'd be burning less fuel and would be more green right? I guess that is the right thing to do.

On that we can agree! But I also like the fact that if I get in an accident, my Dodge Ram will likely protect me waaaay more than a rice burning, plastic laden, compact death trap will!!

It’s not just gas 12 yards. It costs 1/2 or less for all maintenance including oil changes and tires. My tires on my civic, after rebate for warranty, I’d typically $$250-300. Costs me more than a grand to put tires on my 3/4 ton truck.
Google says that 3.9% of adult American men are taller than 6’2”.
I can understand not wanting a Japanese car if you’re 6’5”, but that’s a small percentage of the population. I’m 6’0” in bare feet and feel I’d still be comfortable in my civic with a couple extra inches.

I'm retired & my knees no longer allow me to hump those hill after those critters.. Sweet Chili, Sloppy Joes, Eggs, sausage & potatoes, Spaghetti, Goulash to name a few that taste great after a day on the mountain & all prepared for your aching body..
Factored it all in. Tires, oil changes, even windshield wipers. Still wouldn't work for me. And if I had the car, my truck expenses drop quite a bit. Fewer oil changes and new tires. The car would cost more to maintain as it would get 2/3 of the miles.
If you think the price of fuel is bad, how would you like to be a soldier? Biden says he is going to convert the whole military over to electric vehicles. I can just see an electric tank rolling to a stop and the guys get out and say to the enemy " We're stopping for 10 hours to recharge. Don't shoot till we are charge up!"

It’s gotten so bad, this is what I’ve been relegated to driving for my work vehicle(s).
It may only be anecdotal, but I haul gas/diesel up and down the Front Range in CO, and days before Memorial Day Weekend, my company is sluggish for deliveries. Last year at this time we were slammed.
by September we should see some "correction" in price due to alternative fuels, increased production and reduced consumption via price-driven conservation. I'm gonna say we've not hit the peak but we should be back down to where we are now by early fall

Idyll: My wife had a 5 speed Honda Civic when we got married. Oh I hated that car. Hated driving it. Hated being in it. Felt like I was in a tin can. No guts, couldn't pass. Road noise. I'd happily pay $10k a year not to have to drive a car like that again :) When we moved back home to the sticks one of the first things we did was trade it off. Scared me her driving it with all the deer around.
And where I live, with our large deer population, I believe a little light car is a death trap. Hit a deer at 70 and the deer may run away and you end up in a hospital or morgue.
When my daughter turns 16 she won't be driving a little car. She'll have a pickup or an SUV. Something tall enough a deer will be unlikely to go through the front windshield. And heavy enough to take a hit and not lose control.
I think Brotsky was spot on. To this point demand is still well above supply for everything. Based on that, prices are likley to continue to increase. People are buying everything like crazy. So far no real reduction in miles driven. Prices are reflecting demand and demand is high.
If prices stay where they are it will cost me 800 bucks to get me to Kansas this year pulling my 40 ft TT. My wife will be trailing in her little Nissan, it will cost about 180 to get her there. Once there the Cummins will be parked and we will use her car for all the hunting and going to the store and such. I figure bringing the car at 42 mph will save me well over 600 bucks while out there. 80 days is a long time to be running all over NW Kansas and Nebraska in my diesel. Shawn

I noticed when I had my F350/V-10 that if I stayed right around 68 mph and 2,000 rpm that I got the best milage on the freeway, not towing and not fighting a head wind to much.
I've tried that with my Jeeps, and it is still holding true.
I might get to my destination 5 - 10 minutes later but cheaper.

I just returned from Colorado driving I-80 yesterday. Like mentioned above I kept my speed around 70 mph, rpms at under 2000. My PU was loaded going out, got 20.4 mpg, empty coming home, got 20.7 mpg. Duramax with an Allison. Yes, every yahoo on I-80 was flying past me, I didn't care. Two cheapest places for Diesel along I-80 were at the Henderson and Overton exits. Henderson was $4.49 diesel, other $4.99. All others were $5.07 to $5.39. In Colorado, $5.17 to $5.30, Estes was $5.17 diesel at the Safeway station. Yes, their antlers are looking good already.
I live here (out west in Colorado) so no problem for me.
I'm actually more worried about gas shortages and gas rationing than gas prices. I drew Montana this year and God willing I'm getting up there in September no matter what! If the price of a tag doubled I'd probably still begrudingly pay it and the price of a tag is about what its gonna cost me to make the 4000 mile round trip from Texas in my Diesel 2500 HD. May have to sell some used bows to fund that trip! ??

Gas in Wisconsin (cash), is anywhere from 419 to 439 a gallon in my areas. In the UP, where I am now, it is 4.69 and going to 4.89 this Wed. Also County mgt is worried about elderly and poor, being able to heat homes this winter, with the upcoming high costs of propane and natural gas........

Filled up my gf's car in southern Iowa yesterday coming home from Missouri at $3.99/gal. Around $4.30/gal in my home area.
When I was in college the second time I hunted bear. $20 could get me three 5 gallon buckets of weat , molasses to top them off and enough gas in my 6 cyl Toyota High Boy to run up North and re-bait. Did this three times a week. That was in 2000.
In 2008 paid high prices for gas to take in a Eastern MT elk trip. 23-28 MPG in a 6 cyl SUV fully packed. We thought that was expensive.
Now its $125-130 to fill my pick-up, I hunt turkeys and deer close buy but still interested in bear up North again . A MT or CO elk trip is out of reach for now... Thanks Dems, yeah Dems this is on you...

The only hope I see is republicans take house and senate with a veto proof majority and just pass bills to turn the energy issue back.

I am raising my hand not because I won't hunt at all, but because I am and will continue to cut back. I doubt I am alone and others like me are not hard to find.
Like many of you I do different types of hunting and will cut back on all but one type that I enjoy the most. I make a decent living and do not live pay check to pay check in case you want to make assumptions. I am cutting back because I am concerned what the future may hold in terms of the economy.
It is good to hear the gas prices won't have an effect on everyone but with all due respect, some of you come across as being out of touch.
This will not get better until the gov goes Repb. The Dems want you to fell the pain at the pump until you go electric as has been mandated. When the car batteries wear out what is the us going to do with them. They are not biodegradable. A chinesse copany will take them off our hands go 5/10 miles off our coast and dump them

Gas jumped another .25 cents here in Michigan today....it now sits at $4.79 a gallon.
I talked to a herd of elk today and they unanimously agree everyone should stay home and not hunt this year in protest. I support them on this but told them they should expect me to be back out. They replied that they would feel a great disappointment if they did not have to keep looking up for someone in a tree stand. I may have to stay the whole season just so they don't get lonesome.
Definitely affected my future hunting plans. Figuring out how to make my business work with all this craziness is way more important than hunting. I can hunt at home with my girls and get my fix tho.

Hi Ike and others, I do check in when I can, and nothing on "the net" gets me het up anymore. Retirement/self-employment has been keeping me hopping, and out of the house/chair and away from the screen. /I can understand the skepticism re: my optimism, but I'm basing it on the premise that there are other alternatives to petroleum-based transportation fuels which are less socially palatable and more expensive than petro-based at the $3.50 to $4 mark, but when prices hit and hold > 4.50-$6/gallon, then eventually the market (capitalism and free-market are wonderful things) drive up the knowledge base and justify the infrastructure. Heck if diesel and gasoline goes over $6 and holds, I'll buy a mule and sharpen the axe and crosscut saw !

In all seriousness, my wife drives an 8 year old Honda CRV, which is about as small as we can get and still have room for our kids and the requisite stuff they always seem to need.
Even a car that size costs over $100 to fill up today.
My daily driver is ‘01 4Runner that doesn’t get great mileage, but I only drive it 3-4K miles a year.
I make decent money, and we’re fairly frugal, but I’d be lying if I said the prices of everything going up so much these last months isn’t making an impact on the way we live.
And I know it’s even worse for many others.

July 27th, Wytheville VA, regular gas was $3.89 (lowest seen) diesel $5.18 (also lowest seen) ..... seems to have hit a plateau for now.
Dropping 10 cents a week here in Colorado. We are at $4.49 now, in my rural area. My brother said he filled up in Arkansas for $3.12 yesterday. I predict it to keep coming down until the mid term election in November.

Filled up this morning in Wood Lake Minnesota at $3.99 a gallon.

It won’t last. Gas prices are in part based on psychological warfare. They test us. See how we react to rising prices. Then they throw us a bone. Once we calm down the stick it to us again. I’ve already seen talks of skyrocketing prices as a result of Putin shutting down oil flow to Germany. I think they’ll crank them up again just in time for elk season. Bastards.
We don't need no stinking gasses. I feel the prices but luckily I only live 10 miles from where I park and hunt, and I use a KLR or a Subi to get to my area. Cost me a couple dollars each day I go out hunting.
Prices have gone down about. 37 cents a litre here.
By fall I expect gas prices to be around $3 per gallon. Dems will do it in order to gain November votes by releasing all our reserves or by whatever means. Watch how they'll continue to play the Roe v Wade all the way to election day.

Gas is $3.83 in a neighboring town. From the reactions of people posting about it online you would think that the gas stations are giving it away.
$4.27 in Cheyenne for regular, $5.07 for diesel.
Dropped back down to $3.74 here in Kansas.
I'm thinking/hoping under $3.00/gas/87 after the Labor Day Holiday and dropping until the mid-terms.

BULELK I doubt we will ever again see Sub $3 for more than a very short period if at all. Just the inflation factor and skilled labor shortage will prevent that. We will see a bit of stability after the elections .....look for wild fluctuations until then

gas prices rise from as low as 1.89 when Trump was in office and 2.39 when goof ball took over to 5.00 and more....now they dropped back down to 4.39 in some places around here, and people think it's a bargain...

Yes, many are but I would use a different word than "simple".
There are many examples. For instance, people that take out student loans, earn a useless degree, have no valuable skills to earn a living, and expect you and I to pay their student loan, utilities and rent.
One of my favorite examples is from the last 'housing crisis' where people took out adjustable-rate mortgages and blamed the mortgage company when the rate increased. Yeh, ufb. Of course, the best politicians stepped in and referred to the mortgage companies as predatory lenders and racist.
RonP they called them NINJA loans-no job,no income no assets and banks loaned people money/mortgages assuming us taxpayers would bail them out.Obamas crap to spread the wealth.
It seems everyone wants to blame the politicians for all this stuff, and in a sense yes they are responsible, after all they are supposed to be leaders.

Lowest I've seen in AZ lately was $3.79 by the Bass Pro in Mesa. $4.69 an hour up the road in Payson. $4.19 in Yuma where I live. Around $6 a lot places in CA still.
Seems like something that warrants no discussion. Starbucks coffee is $4.50 a cup yet the gas station coffee is $2. I still see long lines at SB.
$7,500 trip with the possibility of a $20 increase in gas versus when the trip was booked.

At the current decline rate, it will be under $4.00 in SW Colorado.
$3.07 gas is a localized price war with the entry of a new QT store in the area.
