Deon guided me to this Popr on the Rock.
Deon is one of the very best, back country moose guides in Newfoundland. Very few guides in Newfoundland get 2 plus miles off the roads where the big boys hang. He guided me to this velvet Pop’r in 2010. Early September is a terrific time to hunt the giants of the Rock.

So neat that he’s got the archery bug. Congrats on a beauty Newfoundland Moose and thanks for helping me get mine.

Deon- could you give us a bit more info on the taxidermy.............did he freeze dry the velvet? And how did he get that look of the velvet coming off? It didn’t look like it was coming off much if any in your kill photo. I’m assuming he had to partially peel it by hand to get that look?

And will you be bringing that magnificent mount to the trade shows? If so, any chance you will be in Harrisburg this year?

15-Jul-22
Worth the wait!

Thanks, Charlie for ya kind words. pahoyt, I work with Black Ridge outfitters, and I hope it's ok to mention their name on here. Rut Nut the guy is from here in Newfoundland and he is just starting up his taxidermy business, he has been doing it for years as a side job in Alberta, and now he has moved home to start his passion, he's doing very well. [email protected] is his email, I'm sure he can give you more info than I can. As you noticed the velvet was perfectly in place when I got him, but I asked Rodney if he could have the velvet hanging off the antlers, (its something I have always loved to see on a moose, it just makes them even more majestic in my opinion) and he was willing to try it. I was really impressed with the results. I could NEVER afford to bring that moose to a trade show, attending one I would love to do again someday!

Sweet mount but why does it say racking instead of raking velvet?

From: newfielander
17-Jul-22
Axel, it wasn't cheap but in saying that it's a mount of a lifetime so, $10.000 CAD isn't a whole lot. Inshart, this hunt will be on my youtube channel eventually. I have many hunts on there already I think you all will enjoy them. Just search "HOTR" on youtube

I've purchased a number of your DVDs prior to my NFL moose hunt with Conne River back in 2016, Deon. Great to see you posting here and again helluva bull.

Your "decoy" setup is pretty cool too. Care to share any details?

From: Bou'bound

Any other photos of the mount

From: Rut Nut
18-Jul-22
Thanks for the response Deon! I saw the “Rackin Velvet” on the base and assumed you had that put on to display at a trade show.

I too, like your bow mounted accessories.............I assume you hold it up overhead to look like a moose until it gets close enough for a shot? Does that make the bow tough to hold at full draw?

From: Ron Niziolek
18-Jul-22
Beautiful mount!

From: newfielander
18-Jul-22
bigeasygator, the bow setup is simple 2 pieces of wood shaped like antlers, I just bolted them to the bow, and did a pile of practice shots, and it went well as long as it wasn't windy. Bou'bound I will add a few more pictures. Rut Nut, yes basically I just try to pretend to be another bull, of course, there are right ways and wrong ways to do this. Looks are not always the answer it's the way you present it. I will leave every step/detail to your imagination. lol

Nice moose, cool video! Are your fake antlers made out of plywood, or something lighter? Are they bolted to the bow, or can you unhook them if you wanted to hold them in your hands? If they are bolted to the bow, did they change the bow's point of aim at all?

From: newfielander
30-Jan-23
Hi Medicinemann, they were bolted to the bow. It's not really regular plywood, it's a lighter type of laminated wood. I sighted the bow with them attached.

Newfielander, Thanks for answers.....bet it would be tough to hold that bow still (even on a moose) in a decent cross wind!! LOL

From: newfielander
30-Jan-23
Yes, you are correct! Medicinemann. But at 10 yards it's not too bad, lol.

You guys will remember I got my Velvet Moose with Deon in 2010. The dude is a “moose whisperer”. As you can see from his videos if you get way back in the bush there are big moose. Hunting around September one is very effective (bow hunting only). I hunted two days and saw 21 then 18 moose with Deon.
