Who is hunting Sitka blacktail this fall, when and where?
I leave for POW in 9 days.
Not this year but hopefully again in the next year or two. Good luck Jim!
November, POW…Have a great hunt!
Kodiak Island ....mid-November...first trip for Sitka Blacktails. Best of luck guys! Leave one or two for me!
Be sure and bring plenty of Mountain House, PAV. ;-)
I know of a few other Bowsiters going this year.
Damn that sushi was so good Troy!
Two friends of mine are going in October
Nice deer Bigeasygatoir!!! Where where you hunting? Best Luck Jim Hope I can go in 2023
My son and I will be hunting from the Buck Shack on Kodiak for 10 days in October. First trip to Alaska, can't wait!!!
Potro, that was on Kodiak with a bunch of other Bowsiters. Despite being with them, it was still a great trip! :-)
Man that place looks spectacular and looks like fun.
Have a great hunt you guys.
BEG...I feel your pain. ;-)
I know you get it, Nick :-)
Btw, I think Jim had more hair on his face than his head when we took this trip.
Ask Treeman for the excuse…errr…explanation.
I’ll be on Kodiak in October. I hope to shoot a deer, but am first going for goat.
Midwest……there seems to be a common denominator on both trips….
Good luck with the goats (and deer), Ike!
To be clear, I chose 2022 for a rut hunt due to the fact Indiana's firearm season opener falls on the earliest possible date... November 12th. Next year, Indiana bowhunters gain almost a week, with the firearms opener being November 18th.
I've hunted bear with Roark / HOC...and always figured my first Kodiak hunt would be on the Outer Limits...but the dates I needed were long gone when I checked...well over a year ago. Transporter for this hunt is Rogue Expeditions. I've never hunted with RE before, but booked the hunt based on multiple recommendations from good friends.
Are you doing a boat based hunt, PAV?
Yeah Troy...we're doing the boat-based hunt out of Old Harbor.
Next year once again for me!
Im leaving for AK in less than 2 weeks…but I tore my achilles heel training with a heavy pack….. seriously hobbled up, so I will probably be doing more fishing and hunting unfortunately.
I'll be in Kodiak hunting with PAV. Really looking forward to the adventure.
Pav, you’ll be in good hands. I’ve done three trips with those guys.
I’ll be in Kodiak next year. My countdown clock shows 466 days to go.
Oh man, I’m going to be missing this view in November. I really want to go back again as soon as I can! Not this year, maybe in ‘24!
So excited I posted twice!
Coast Guard needs to check that boat, some shady looking people on there…Lol
JSW that is about as pretty a buck as I can imagine. Now you have me Dreamin. October can't get here soon enough.
Ed, Good luck! Post up pictures!!
Good luck everyone. I’ll be very interested to see how everyone does and how they feel the current deer population (On Kodiak particularly) is doing. When I was there last year I felt the herd was down considerably compared to previous trips. But I also suspect that could be location dependent to a good degree too.

To be honest ... I'd rather have the numbers down. Too many deer can be a problem. Ed F
Kodiak August 18, 2 bow hunters and 10 free big game tags in our pockets. Gotta love being an Alaskan resident!
Hunting with Pav and KDC this November. First time to Alaska so looking forward to it.
I had never really given a hunt for Sitka blacktail much thought. After having talked with a friend who’s going this November and jumping back on this forum it really makes me want to try and make it happen. May need to start trying to save some money to try and make it happen sooner rather than later. Good luck to all who are going this fall!
Had a bit of a tough time this year. My secret is finding the really stupid ones…
Excellent trophy pic. Congrats.
Fantastic trophy pic! Congrats Zack!
Nice buck and pic, congrats.
I am definitely due for another Sitka deer run…
Like Zack said, we had a tough hunt but managed to find a couple dumb ones…
That thing looks like a tank, Kota!
Nice deers. Congrats Why was the hunt tough? weather? Deer population?
Congrats Cory. Doesn’t look to snowy yet!
"My secret is finding the really stupid ones"....Looks like he let you walk up to him laying there and put your bow on his back for the photo op....lol. Congrats Zack and Kota on those fine deer and great photos.
Nicework guys! Good to see both of you posting here on BS!
2022 deer numbers as bad as I've ever seen.
Nice trophies guys! Glad to see you posting again Bob! Any idea for why the low deer numbers? Tough winter last year? TODDY
Congrats guys! I don't know about being dumb, but Kota-man, that one does look like a "block head"!
Kota, that is the most badass pic of a sitka blactail that I've ever seen! Beast!
Three colder than average winters in a row. Bucks don't seem to be surviving. As a percent of population, you'll see more and more stags. They don't rut and are in better shape being more likely to survive cold winter.
i went and came home with a wrecked knee and some ducks
Great running into you Ned…Good luck with that “Avian Slam”… ;). Too bad about the knee. Yes, as BlacktailBob said, the deer numbers have plummeted since I was last there (4 years ago). Six of us had a hard time turning up anything mature. We saw enough deer to keep things interesting but it was tough. My fear is where there are deer, they’re being decimated. Too bad because Kodiak for deer is as good an adventure hunt dollar for dollar there is in North America.
We hunted with the same transporter as Ned...different boat. Flew into Old Harbor, but due to the weather, never got very far from port. Saw eight deer on top the first day, but only two small bucks. Weather drove us into a different bay for the remainder of the hunt. Managed to get to shore three of the four remaining days, but none of the hunters even saw a deer in that bay. Lots of climbing and great scenery...but no deer. Did catch over 100 snow crabs...and ate like kings. The weather is what it is...November on Kodiak Island. No regrets...just gives me a good excuse to go back!
I started this post and then never posted a picture after I got home. How rude of me. I took a great buck on August 1.
Congrats to all who had success this year.
Jim let me hunt with him this past August.
Some amazing deer guys! One day I'll have to make my way up that way and chase some of those critters.
I managed to kill two bucks in mid/late December. Each had both sides when I shot and each lost both sides as they made their death run. Fun time, not too many deer but enough to keep us entertained.
That's crazy! Were they on the beach, Nick? Where the heck is the snow???
Beach up to about 1200’ elevation. I stalked both mine in the piles of driftwood. It was really fun.
What’s your buddy skinning, Nick? I’m assuming a red fox? Body looks kinda big for a fox.
A fox, we shot a couple, but two got away and I’m sure they told their friends.
