"NEW" for 2022 Timberwolf hunts... hunters must apply for their own CITIES permits for any Raw or Taxidermied hides that the successful hunter brings home into the USA. Contact me for website you can receive any such permit. For those coming to Pine Acres on a combo or wolf only in September, plan on getting your CITIES as soon a possible... Info will be posted on our Facebook page.
What does success run on gun hunts for wolf only.
Beings that the Fall is the leanest for the wolf... success is quite good, about 70% shot at or harvest (Opportunity). Baits are all active. We actually do quite well. We have wolves hitting our bait now. I have camera's looking over the baits now. I will be checking camera's mid week.
Sarsaparilla Berries...
Sarsaparilla Berries...
I will be working with a couple of bear hunters who will be spot and stalk only. We have a bumper crop of berries and have checked out a couple of clear cuts. I will be filming the hunters. Going to be a great hunt!! The sarsaparrilla Berries are going to be abundant also. All the moisture this year has produced a berry buffet!! Baits are doing great even with the berries.

Last year no berries, very dry and lots of activity where we were. Do you find the bumper berry crop makes much difference, or do you do anything different? You seem to have this figured out more then most!

John, we had a Blue Berry crop last year but low yield. The drought actually helped another Berry flourish. We had a bumper crop of Mountain Ash, Cranberries and Hazel Nuts. This year 2022, will be a BUMPER CROP of Berries of every kind!! Mountain Ash Berries will be 2 weeks later this year because of hardly any sun this summer.
We start baiting early before the Berries ripen. Lets the Bears know baits are available. We use alot of sweets also. Bears will eat our popcorn recipe berries or not.
For 18 years we had only a Fall hunt in Ontario, we had to figure it out.

Bears and Wolves co mingle at a bait... they just take turns. There are 4 wolves hitting this bait and 2 Bears. These wolves will be easy to get.
Those look like young wolves??
JL, they are.... I have a picture of the Mother somewhere in the mix of pictures, she's not much bigger. Where there are young, there are old!! We saw this pack on the road about 1/2 km from the bait. Was 4 of them. When hunting wolves not too much time to size them up, identify as wolves, take first ethical opportunity.... SHOOT!! I have about 100 pics of the wolves on the SD Card and quickly downloaded in a swarm of Mosquitoes.
Here is the cub of the 2015 sow in picture
Here is the cub of the 2015 sow in picture
Ever since 2015 we have been following this sow. In 2015 she had 3 cubs.... all had a white patch. Last year I got this 2nd pic wondering if it was a sow and then realized it was the same bear as in the 2015 picture. Well, I put a many time repeat client on this bait and mentioned that the bear with the white patch was probably a sow. Mentioning she is a great breeder. He passed her many times. He took a nice Boar with his bait. I was right, she had 4 healthy cubs in January. Even after the drought that the biologist said would be devastating to the bears survival.
We have a cinnamon Bear hitting this bait also. Happens to have a white patch like this sow does. Its a boar. So, if anyone sits on this this, I will go over the pic with him and show him what bear he can take.
That bear sitting like a dog is real nice picture.

Bowyers got it done yesterday afternoon. LOTS of berries right now. Stomachs stuffed with berries. Will post after photo shoot.
1 Longbow hunter took a nice Bear last night. A 16 year old took a real nice one with compound and a third with 300 Magnum. Tracked 1 Bear till 2:20 AM. Still alive when we found it. 600 meter retrieval. Back to camp at 4:10 AM. Skinned and quartered compound kill on the spot. Was a BLAST!!
Missing that part for sure, that is a rush!
Late nite early morning retrieve... tracked 600 metres skinned and quartered where we found the bear. Meat and hide safe in cooler.

9 hunters.... 1 Rifle, 4 trad bows, 4 compounds. Seven Bears harvested!!
*** Update... berries are on strong. Mountain Ash, High Bush Cranberries, Sassparila Berries are now ripe. Bears are heavy on the Berries. Never seen such a heavy Berry crop before. So called global warming is creating great crops for the forest dwelling animals. Expect thriving population of Bears!!
clearing our way into this bait.... found a trail cam we left a year ago..
Only fishing hunters had time for is from shore... hunters did real good on the Walleyes, Small Mouth and Pike.
This just came into my email.... Mike also shot a Pope and Young contender last week.
Bears stomach was jammed full of Blueberries... but still came into our popcorn recipe. Got a nice Boar tonight.
*** 5 Hunters this week, ALL seen Bears.
Spike, hoping for a safe and successful season for you, your guys and the hunters. Thanks for sharing stories and pictures and letting me tag along on here!

Feasting on Mountain Ash Berries...
Bumper Crop of Mountain Ash Berries..... BUT Baits are still hitting hard!!
Spike, how do you pop that much popcorn?
Ok,OK, thanks. Bout how many lbs of kernels you figger to fill a 55 barrel?
We bought 30, 50 pound bags of kernels. Popped all of it in March. Was $48.00 for 50 pound bags, CAD. We will use filler bait topped off with popcorn. Bears love the popcorn recipe of ours but need filler bait to fill them up. If baiting pre season, popcorn alone isn't enough to keep a bear at a bait, as popcorn goes right through him.
***When Berries are heavy, our popcorn recipe works wonders on bringing bears in front of the hunter for a shot. Pine Acres makes our own Bear Bombs to throw at our Bait sites to remind bears of the baits. If a Bear is full of Berries and not interested in bait, he will come into our Bear Bombs.
*** 30 bags of kernels gave up 90 X-LARGE garbage bags of popped corn.
Little guy gets a pass.... Bowhunter Mike ended up with a good sized bear 2 days after this pic was snapped.

Hey question about baiting. I’m trying my hand at baiting on my own in Maine and baits are going dead. I see you use a lot of popcorn do you think microwaved flavored/ unflavored will get them interested again?
I'm not gonna speak for spike but baits should not go "dead" unless the bear is dead. Lot of it comes down to bait that is GOOD. Even with abundant natural foods, if you use GOOD bait, they ain't gonna forget.
Northern Boy, I would think micro popcorn would work. Sprinkle something on it. I use jello powder. A good bait can go dead but usually comes back to life after a few checks. Happens to the best baiters out there.
Or as Bearman says, maybe someone down the line killed the bear you were baiting.
*** Try a homemade Bear Bomb to bring in Bears.... even if they are full of Natural foods. Pour about a gallon of used fryer grease into a bucket with a handle and add 4 ounces of liquid smoke mixed in. Pick a grease tree and throw it high and let it drip. Drips for hours. Awesome call bait.

Awesome thanks for the advice I’m gonna give it a try!
Any bear pics from last night?
I do JL. Phone won't let me post pics. I have to send pic to computer and then send.

Great pic!! Thanks and congrats to all.
We have this week off with no hunters. Will allow us to prepare for next weekend's beginning of our Wolf / Bear hunt. We switched from sweet baits to all meat for the Bears. Meat is fresh not rotted. The barrels will be feeding both the bears and wolves. We have 2 combo hunters and 2 Wolf only hunters.
The Bait in this picture produced a real nice Boar last week. Now have another shooter in the first picture to take the tagged bears place. We put the gut pile on top of the bait barrel to feed the wolves.
When and how do the wolves normally come into a meat bait?
They have been coming into the Bear Baits since Spring. They will reach into the barrel and grab the meat and usually eat it in front of the barrel. They have no fear yet as they have been visiting for so long with out any interference from hunters. Hunters on combo baits will be archers.
Are they morning, evening or anytime visitors?
This site is on our gated private land. Will be 125 yards from the treestand blind to bait. Hunter will be able to reach out as far as he can shoot as stand overlooks a 400 acre 4 year cut.
I have the wolves coming in all day long. Also, the bears are visiting morning, mid day and evening. The fresh meat we changed to will help bring them (Bears) in sooner as they are trying to pack in as much protein as they can before denning. Bears and wolves are co habitating with no issues. Yesterday we dumped 55 gallon barrels of chicken guts near each site to stank up the sites. Smell carries a half KM or more.
We still have Blueberries and Mountain Ash.
Hey Chris, after so many years hunting with you I figure I should post this on the Pine Acres thread! Got him Thursday night using Dad's, old 38-40 lever action , low recoil, so I was good. Made Jerry and kids help drag him out. One shot LOL.
Stupid sideways pic makes him look small to! LOL, Fixed it, lol
Cant see the whole wolf but these pics shows the Wol coming in different times of day.
2 Bowsiters came in yesterday to start hunting Wolves / Bears with Bow. Gully Bait is a15 to 17 yard shot. Cedar bait posted in the thread up above. Cedar bait is a 23 yard shot.
Hunting wolf so close will make it a little tougher to get the animal. They will have to sit in the stand with the bow in the hand ready to go the whole time. Its hard to do. I wish them luck. We also have 2 rifle hunters doing a wolf only hunt.
Antoher issue is we hope the wolves dont keep chasing the bears when they come in to eat. Seen it happen in the past.
Here is next year's price list... Semi Guided.
Holy smokes! Your prices went up a whole hundred dollars, Chris!
Definitely one of the best bargains out there, for sure.

As I vaguely recall, and the memory gets foggier, 1983 a hunt cost $600.00. That's a pretty small increase.
We finally got a wolf just now...
SWEEET! Congratulations, that is awesome.

Just finishing up the major upgrades to Pine Acres.... will be done at end of October. This top pic is of our new signage on HWY #17. Second pic is the sign put up by my dad in 1985 that was just replaced.
We started building this Outhouse for The Mutrie River Outpost. Ended up being a costly project... over $1000.00. All treated lumber and shingled. Was a real pain to build.
The Outpost is booked for Whitetails starting Oct 29th and for Bear next Spring. Awesome Walleyes fishing too!!
Grouse hunting has been good so far this Fall.
Mutrie Outpost...
Mutrie Outpost...
We bought this land with half mile river frontage. Was completely cut over. Many were checking it over for purchase but because it was a cut over mess no one wanted the land. We walked into the property. Stood up on a hill. Looked towards the roaring river, as water was high. I said I can envision a cabin standing in this spot. Was May 2004.
Was ATV access only. A 5 KM ride from road. Everything was hauled in with a boat trailer that was jimmied to be a flat bed. Was about 50 loads in by ATV. Was not easy and messy.
Got the cabin built up to the point of putting the rafters on. But had to order the rafters and they took for ever to arrive.
On June 23rd, 2005, before the raters arrived, a straight line wind blew across the region. Cabin, flew about 20 feet. No damage but was in the wrong spot. Eventually we found help and got the cabin back whwere it belonged and finished the frame in 2005. In 2006 we finished the inside. Put electric through out and had it inspected. Even though we were not on the grid. Just wanted to do it.
Electric is run by generator. Wood stove. We bring treated water in from Main Camp for drinking. Still to this day its ATV access only or walk 3 miles. Cabin is nestled in its own Bear Management and gated land for deer hunting.
Again, standing on the hill looking over the river where I wanted a cabin. The trees are now 20 feet high. Have a walk way to the river. Boats for fishing. My vision for the property came to fruition.
Awesome Bear, Deer, Grouse and Walleye fishing.
Good job spike looks good.
Great deal! It's nice to see someone's vision finally come to realization.
FWIW.....for your next one (if there is a next one?), you can make your own rafters onsite and not have to buy them and get them into the cabin site.. I seen it done once the floor is finished and before the walls go up. You make a jig on the floor and set the 2x4's in the jig, cut the ends at an angle to join up flush and nail them together with wood or metal plates. As I recall....you run a chalk line down the center of the floor lengthwise and that's the center for the apex of the roof. Have the 2x4's extend past the floor however far you want your eves to extend past the walls. Once the jig is made, you can make the rafters pretty quick. I think I seen that idea on an Amish video?? I think I'll do that for my next deer blind.
Thats a good idea JL. We are building a woodshed at Mutrie Outpost in Nov if the weather holds out. We have about 4 cords of split pine and birch to get under a roof.
There's likely a Youtube out there on how to make them pretty easy.
