I had a great hunt on POW. I shot this buck on the first day after missing a really good one. This one was a 3 hour pack out to camp and then another 3 hours down to the boat.
I went back up and hunted some more and got close, 8 yards on one buck, but couldn't put myself through that much torture for a second one. I'm blessed to be able to still do it though. It's not an easy hunt.
The one I shot is on the left
Congrats again, Jim! Beautiful buck
Wow! Congrats on the stick and string kill!!! Great pics!
That’s awesome Jim! Congrats!
Awesome buck Jim. Would enjoy hearing more of the story. My son and I will be hunting them from the Buck Shack on Kodiak in October, can't wait!!
Beautiful scenery. Congrats on the great buck!
Congratulations again, Jim! Beautiful buck! Fun hunt for sure!
Wow! Beautiful deer and scenery What’s your bow set up
Congrats on a great buck.
That one looks really good to me. Thanks for posting.
Congrats on a great buck.
Good stuff Jim! Congrats. Glad to see you got at least one window of decent weather!
I was shooting my 56", 52# Bighorn takedown. Hand made cedar arrows with an old glue on Bear razorhead. 520 grain total arrow weight. I've been using a Thunderhorn strap on quiver for a while now. The two piece quiver travels well.
I take the bow down to pack it in. It's so steep you need a free hand to pull yourself up. I carry my arrows in an old PVC arrow tube I got from Cabelas years ago. I can stuff 9 or 10 arrows in it without crushing the feathers.
I’ve never known you to need 8 or 9 arrows for anything :).
Congrats again on the great buck-your having quite a year already
Amazing man!!!!
That is so awesome, what a beautiful buck and scenery! We are going to Sitka next fall, and I can't wait! I am more excited about that hunt than my 6A Archery bull rut hunt tag here in AZ!
Congratulations!!!
That’s cool. The pack out was harder on the deer than you!!!! Great buck.
Jerry,
I once got 10 shots at the same deer over about a 10 hour period and still didn't get him. So.....
I once shot and killed a deer with the last broadhead in my quiver. I generally do quite well but I also have had some epic fails. If you hunt as much as I do, you end up experiencing everything at least once.
Awesome that looks like a great time.

Congratulations! That looks like a good size buck..how much he weigh?
Congratulations on a great deer and even more so to be able to pack the deer out like that. Not a lot of people could do that including me.
Great adventure, buck, and pics, congrats Jim...earned!
That pic with the bucks bedded is really sweet Congrats on a good trophy!
Great trip! Excellent photos, buck, etc! Congratulations!
Congrats Jim! Did you stalk those bucks in their beds or catch up to them after they were moving? Beautiful country! Thanks for sharing.
Great looking buck and some beautiful country! Congrats.
Beautiful velvet horned buck.
Dandy buck. And great eating
Congrats JSW, that’s a beauty.
Congrats on a dandy buck and one heck of an adventure!
Nice landscape. Congrats for your trophy
Very nice, congratulations
Outstanding....congrats on the beautiful buck!
Sounds liked you really worked for that one, congrats!
To answer some questions. I don't know what he weighed. Probably 150-175 live weight.
The picture i shared of him bedded was 3 hours before I shot him. There was a forky bedded about 40 yards above them which made it impossible to come in from above. They eventually moved, fed some and bedded again. This time they were all lined up on the same bench.
He was bedded 30 yards below me facing straight away when I came up on him. No good shot so I waited him out. Eventually, he got up and of course walked straight away. After a few steps he turned and stopped giving me a hard quartering away angle at 36-40 yards. I hit towards the back of the ribs angling forward but the shot was pretty steep downhill. I got liver and one lung. The broadhead stopped in the sturnum. He went about 50 yards and layed down. He soon started wavering and struggled to get up. He stumbled for a few steps and fell into some rocks, of course breaking my arrow.
Congrats. I'm not sure that qualifies as a tough hunt though.
Congrats Jim! Beautiful buck.
Sorry about the broken arrow. Congrats on your trophy.
Beautiful buck Jim………congratulations.
I've never had the opportunity to hunt Blacktails...I'm curious are they as aware and alert as the whitetail?
They are not as alert as whitetails. You are hunting deer that might not see a single person each year. They do have to deal with bears and wolves so they are wary.
I've read articles about hunting Blacktails, sounds like it would be fun.
Stunning country, beautiful buck. Congrats!
My goodness what a deer and adventure. I tried bear hunting just off of POW and I’ve sworn that area off forever :-)
