2023 trapline/wolf hunting with Babine

I know it's a little bit early to start this thread but I just had a spot open up Dec. 15-20. This trip is a great date to not only run the trap line but a good date to also run the hounds on lynx before the snow gets too deep. I've also had real good success in the past on the wolf hunting on this date. I also have an opening Feb. 1-6. The cost of this trip is $8500 Canadian plus licenses and tax. You fly into Smithers and we would pick you up at the airport or you can drive directly to our lodge.

I'm starting to get a wolf pack put together. I should have my sons shoulder mount to add to it in October and my wife's life size mount by Christmas. Not many people think about doing a shoulder mount on a wolf but they do look real sharp.

If anyone is interested in a quick last minute wolf hunt I have a couple baits that are being hit hard by wolves now. I think I can get someone a shot at a wolf in a couple days of hunting. Would have to arrive by this Sunday and depart next Friday.

Archery opportunities are pretty low on wolves. I got one spot that could work but might but a long shot and low percentage of success. Would want to combine it with trapping.

Lots of wolves and lynx around. The client arrives January 4. Today I took out my youngest son and got the dogs some exercise. Hopefully we don't get too much snow in the next month and we can run the dogs on some Lynx during the wolf hunts too.

It is a small wolverine but the way it's positioned makes it look smaller. Today we checked a couple marten and wolverine traps and set out some wolf snares. Tonight we're going to spend tonight at one of the cabins

Very nice! Looks like a 120 Connibear that you caught the weasel in. Do you have to modify the trigger on them, to get the weasel to trip it? I would think a weasel could slip through pretty easily without setting the trap off.

I don't modify the triggers for catching weasels in the 120s. I know a few get away without tripping the trap but those one's keep coming back.

On our last day this 330 box had a wolverine walk back and forth behind it but didn't go to the front and stick it's head in. This one could be tricky to catch. Might be trap educated.

It's been hard getting wolves this winter so far, before Christmas they were hitting every bait and then just disappeared. All the lakes have about 15 inches of slush on them and the wolves aren't using the lakes. Looks like about another week of warm weather still to come. A couple of the stations away from the lakes are starting to get a couple wolves hitting them again.

On our way to the cabin we shot this coyote and then while we were taking pictures a lynx crossed the road in front of us. We tried to call it back out but it had no interest.

Been a good first half of this trip. First day we caught a bunch of marten and weasels. Then we spent the night at one of the cabins, in the morning we seen 3 wolves on the bait. Ended up getting a shot at a nice dark one

The next day we loaded up the dogs to see if we could find a Lynx to chase. We chased one for about 5 hours and we seen it 2 times but the snow conditions we in the advantage of the Lynx. The dogs couldn't put enough pressure on it to get it treed. On the way back to the lodge we checked a couple sets got our lynx there.

Lloyd, interesting, Colorado is planning in the very near future to reintroduce the Wolverine to this state. Colorado placed the Lynx in Colorado a few years back and now the Gray Wolf by year's end. If you visit Colorado , it will be just like "home coming".

Jack or Lloyd, How many wolves would you guys average a year? If I remember correctly your father didn't remove nearly the wolves you two have. What has this done for current moose numbers in the area?

There is lots of strange unexplainable things out there, like how did that wolf know that snare was there and walk around it or did that lynx really squeeze through that snare and not set it off. All the Sasquatch tracks I've seen were grizzlies out past their bedtime. There's till a couple openings for next year at the end of January/beginning of February.
