It has been a long time since I’ve posted something like this. I used to do it at least once a year, but haven’t for a while. No real solid reason, I just haven’t. I guess I was feeling nostalgic today, so here are a few pics from my time during Covid around North America.

During the winter, I received an unusual message from the board of the North Dakota Bowhunters Association. They were looking for a guest speaker for the annual convention and had accidentally messaged me.

It seemed they were too embarrassed to admit they were looking for someone better to entertain them with bowhunting stories and before I knew it, my wife and I were in North Dakota for the event.

I got to sign the shirt for guest speakers and I’m not sure how my name got on the same spot as some of these other bowhunters.

I have been very fortunate to see some amazing places and have some unbelievable experiences over the years. But I have also had some excellent luck come my way in some big moments. This was my third sheep hunt and third ram with a bow. I know I say this every time, but I don’t know if I will ever do it again. However, I do know for certain that every time something turns out well on hunts anymore, I am more and more thankful for the encounter going my way. So often, it does not for a bowhunter. I consider myself one of the lucky ones!

All three of us were on the same flight, leaving from the same airport, we checked in together and sat together, but somehow, only Nick’s bow made it. I’m not sure how much he bribed the airline, but it worked out for him being the only one with a weapon. The first night he shot this piggy while we watched.

Things are different now than they were during the height of Covid. Work is busy again and it will always require more of my attention. There is a stronger desire to stay home much more than to travel like I have before. And I FEEL a lot older than I always have.

Things change and will continue to do so. At some point Covid will be completely over and things will change again. I don’t know how much of what I will be doing in the future, but am definitely grateful for good opportunities, good luck and most of all, good buddies.

I was hunting a ghost that lived in a vast cholla patch and after two-full winters of being hunted, I figured I would be wasted my time waiting for him to make a mistake during daylight hours as an old Coues.

But on a buck like this I had to try, right?!?!

That fkn hotdog

From: Zackman
14-Jan-24
On the third day, I settled into the blind again for an all-day sit. In this spot, you tend to see far fewer deer than other areas of the ranch. Although there is less deer density, there is always a giant buck in the area. Killing the buck has historically been an issue though.

I was prepared for a long week of slow action. Since it was pre-rut, I wasn't surprised that I had only seen one buck--a spike--after the first two days. So when I peaked out the back window of the ground blind and saw a doe and fawn slowly trekking through the cactus toward the water, I was shocked when I saw the big frame of a mature buck following 50 yards behind them!!

From: Zackman
14-Jan-24

Zackman's embedded Photo
Zackman's embedded Photo
The doe and fawn came right in to drink and stood at 20 yards while I watched the buck make nearly a complete circle around me—peaking through brush and cactus without committing to water.

After a couple minutes, the buck was 50 yards in front of me and when the doe turned to leave I figured the game was over. Another giant Coues would evade the bowhunter at this blind!

That’s when he made his first mistake in 3 years of us hunting him and he slowly worked his way to where the doe was heading. Instead of looping around like he had been previously, the buck cut a straight line towards the doe and started angling my direction. When he stopped with only an antler sticking out in the open, I ranged it at 30 yards and readied to draw.

After 7 or 8 hours (it seemed), he walked into the small opening as I drew. He was not coming to drink, but he came close enough to clear the brush. And when I stopped him just before he slipped through my shooting lane, I watched the arrow slice through both shoulders.

Back at home for the November blacktail rut. This buck had been on my mind for more days than I could remember. This buck has been a shooter for 5 seasons and I had hunted him exclusively for the past 2 years hoping someday he would mess up. It was—without a doubt—the smartest buck I had ever hunted. The amount of close calls I had with this buck over the past two seasons was enough to drive me insane.

I had passed chances at a few nice bucks hoping to turn up that old buck that always found a way to outsmart me.

Just before thanksgiving, I managed to spot the buck with a couple does several hundred yards away. I made a big loop to get the wind as good as possible before sneaking in. I got into range of the group but could never get a clear shot at the buck before a doe busted me and all the deer exploded from the area. This was the 6th time in the last 2 seasons I had been in bow range without getting a shot at that damn deer.

The story of encounters with this buck over the years is too long to describe, however, I’ll tell you he had me seriously considering ending my blacktail bowhunting forever!

The following morning I had admitted to myself that I needed to give up on this buck. He was ruining my bowhunting enjoyment! It was only with one more chance meeting that one thing finally went my way.

Instead of trying to beat him the same way I had tried and failed repeatedly, I gave it one last go and managed to trick him into range with rattling horns. I think I was more shocked when he showed up right in front of me than he was when he looked up to see me at full draw. I like to think that the last thing he thought was “I can’t believe this guy finally got the best of me!”

After 7 bow-range encounters with this buck, it was finally over and even though it wasn’t the highest scoring blacktail I had ever shot, it was absolutely the most fulfilling one! The buck was either 8 or 9 years old (awaiting a lab results) and headed down in antler size but not is caginess…

I will forever remember this back-and-forth with the buck I had to give up trying to outsmart, before finally getting lucky enough to shoot him.

On the 5th day, heavy white horns appeared above the cholla and less than a minute later, I watched the buck fall about 50 yards away.

It was another lucky encounter with a buck over a 2 or 3-year time frame that happened to work out. This old buck may not have the biggest antlers I’ve ever seen in a Coues, but he had the fattest body!

This buck finished another NA archery deer slam for me. I think I’ll stop keeping track with this round number. I do enjoy chasing deer!
