September is only 30 days. I try and make the most of it. Enjoy some pictures and stories from this September . Hunt
Little pre September warm up with one of favorites. I met Nick on Bowsite over 12 years ago. We have shared many great hunts.
After Nick killed his lope it was my turn. We have lots of fun if you can’t tell. Hunt
I don't think anybody has more fun than you H! Post it up, love these recaps.
Couple days later my hunting partner showed up. Roger didn’t draw a tag this year. But was along for the ride as always . Jace connect on a nice buck on day 4 .
Nick flight got delayed. So we went fishing for the evening. It was also a grand time. Hunt
Ridge was having the best time of us all!
Fishing is good for the soul!!
Looking forward to your recap! Always love your picture recaps! Fun will be had!
We also scouted bucks for my hunting partners draw mule deer tag.
I'll be tuned in to this one...
This is a farmlands deer tag. Lots of bucks but small properties .
My Boy is growing up fast. To fast
Family time is always a priority for me. I spent Labor Day weekend at the lake enjoying the last days of summer.
I've been waiting for your annual recap!
Did I mention we like To have Fun!
Jace kills a nice buck on the second day. Deer tag check. Time for elk!!
Killed this Grouse on my first elk hunt of the year. Rock was weapon of choice. Almost had a nice 6 point. He won the battle today. He mite not be so lucky the next time:)
Sept 10 . I head south to Utah to help another one of my Favorites with his limited elk tag.
Will and Joe are what elk hunting partners should be. It was amazing to watch them hunt together . Words seldom spoke but everyone knew what was happening. I felt privileged to share camp with them
It was hot the first few days!!
You had me at Buffalo Trace Hunter! Looking forward to this one! :)
If you know you know!! September stable at its finest!!
But as we all know in September . That it can change fast. Very fast!
Amazing country !! Even better people to share it with
Even better bulls. This bull had a broke right ear. We named him Evander. He was something special
We like to eat good also. Lope back strap and eggs!! The good stuff
Pounded a lot of Nails for the glass in this front seat.
Soon it was time for me to Head home. I will leave the rest of the story for one of Bowsite’s best story tellers to tell!! Thanks for having me down Will!!
Got home cleaned gear and packed for my turn!!
Ponies are loaded and ready . Let’s do this!!
I always enjoy your summary threads! I'm not a whiskey drinker but a friend bought me a bottle of Buffalo Trace for my bday a couple years ago, very smooth. Keep it coming!
Few hours later camp is set up and we are chomping at the bit. We split up for the night . Not much going but Jace heard a few bugles so we had a plan
The Good Stuff!!!! Keep it coming!
Nothing the next day but people . Lots of people and not much sign. Let’s move time is precious !
We move spots. More of the same lots of people . 3 days in and not a single bugle or elk spotted .
52 foot miles in 4 days and one encounter . The bull took his 2 cows and ran!! That’s elk hunting .
We regroup and move again. You can’t kill them if they don’t LIVE there. Say it louder for those in the back. Keep moving!
Marty the moose like my calls. Elk not so much .
We found some elk. But so had some other people. But we had close encounters with him 3 days in a row. But he got spooked on day 3.
Late one night I hear a bugle across the valley we had been hunting. With little light left I jogged over that way. I ran out of light . But the bull was going nuts.!
The next morning I am standing in the same spot from last night. The bull is still bugling. We play the game for a hour or so. Then I see him take his cows and head into the timber. I am bummed and slap worn out. I sit down and contemplate my next move. I start in with some lost calf calls and soon I hear a cow respond back. I could hardly get up and a arrow on the string and her she comes with bull in tow.
Happy Man. I text Jace and Travis for some help. Good friends are hard to come by!!
All packed up and ready for a ride in the Toyota
Truck beers never disappoint . Found a bonus on the pack out
Ridge has a job at the meat cutting table now days
Anyone that knows me knows it once my tags filled I am not done hunting. I have helped dozens of people kill elk and lots of Bowsiters. I clean my gear . A good friend of mine wanted me to take his grandson. So I grab him and my brother-in-law and off for another round
Great recap Hunt ! I see Muche had to show off with the widest speed goat in North America. ;-) You guys never disappoint !
Boring!! Just kidding Hunt, keep it coming!!
Buffalo Trace is right up the road from me. My best friend is a distiller there. He may have made the bottle you're drinking. lol Congrats on some fine animals you all got.
With the title I figgered either Hunt or OTC. Not surprised to see both. Keep it coming!
It's always "on" with these guys! Thanks for taking us too
Way too much fun! Nicely done and thanks for sharing your adventures. Paul
Waiting on the rest. Good stuff Hunt!
So this would be Jermery first bowhunt. He served as a Sniper in the Marines for 12 years. So I knew he had what it took to make it happen. Me Cam and Jeremy left my house headed for one of my favorite spots
Season recap from a Bowsite legend. Doesn't get any better! Ready for Round #2!!!
The first evening was great. 2 bulls bugling and close calls. Cam had a nice bull just up the ridge. But could never get a shot.
The next morning is slow. We make our way up and around to a hidden basin. September naps are the best!!
Most of the day is quiet . It around 6 we get to a new drainage and the sounds of September are in the air.
To late to make a move today. But I make a plan for the next day. Long walk with headlamps back to camp .
The next morning was raining and slow again. Both us and the elk.
So awesome! Thank Hunt and it was great to see Will make an appearance!!!!
We slow hunt our way back to the elk for last night. Lots of sign. Fresh rubs and tracks all over. About 3:30 we hear the first bugle and then another . The next 2 hours was amazing . 5 bulls bugling nonstop . We had lots of close calls and of course one runs right up to me as the guys moved in out front . Cam and Jermery have many close calls and a few mishaps. We talk about it and laugh. Elk hunting at it best.
Wow, seems like a pretty sucky fall, I’m sorry you had to go trough that! ;)
Out there livin the dream!
—jim
Cam had a work obligation for Friday . So we head back to regroup . I make a plan for Saturday and Jermery shoots at my house all day Friday .
I envy your seemingly endless energy. My hats off to you for your passion to help others get tags filled.
I pick a spot close to home. I haven’t been in here since 2017. Another guy is parked at the gate when we arrive. We talk and make a plan. Nice guys and we head separate ways.
All is quiet until around 8 and bulls start talking below is on private. Soon I can tell one is coming and coming fast. I move Jermery into position. Soon see antlers coming up the hill. A clean miss and the bull runs back to the herd.
We talk about what happened. Another bull is bugling still. So I keep after him. Hour later he is coming on the same trail. Jeremy is full draw as I stop the bull at 34 yards. Elk fever gets him and the arrow flies high!! Dammit
But the bull is still bugling. So we wrap around the ridge and set in front of him. This time I am over his shoulder giving ranges as the bull approaches .
Down to one arrow but still all Smiles. We head out for wings and a cold beer.
Excellent stuff, so far, Hunt!
I get home and Ridge is begging me to go elk hunting. I tell him it will not be easy. He said I don’t care. I call Jace and we make a plan to meet at 5:30. Ridge get his gear on and test it out
We head in as light is breaking. This is Griz country and I didn’t want a encounter with Ridge at all much less in the dark. We make it in fine. But see a black bear on the way in . I was glad we waited
We listen and call but all is quiet. Sometimes it take awhile for the elk to get back in here from feeding at night. Soon we hear a few faint bugles. Ridge helps with the calling. Raking trees and throwing rocks. Perfect job for a 7 year old
Bulls are very responsive but not moving. 3-4 bulls . Ridge is smiling and enjoying his first elk experience . Me and Jace split up and bugle from about 100 yards apart . Mixing in some cow calls . The bulls start to ramp up.
Gettin a little gray there bud! Lol
I can’t even think of you without thinking about late night comedy shows in the guide tent. And I just sit and laugh!
Always look forward to your witty annual recap.
After a hour or so things slow down. I move back across the ridge and bugle into another drainage. A bull screams close real close. Jace moves over and I grab Ridge and retreat up the hill.
The bull hear me and Ridge walking and moves lower down the hill. I start calling and the bull screams and Ridge covers his ears. Soon I see the bull and show Ridge . He sees him and about that time Jace shoots him from down below.
Wow that just happened!!
We wait a hour but we didn’t need to. Bull made it 60 yards
A special day for us all. But I saw the fire in Ridges eyes. He is my boy for sure!!
Good hunting partners are hard to come by. Jace is As good as it gets!! We break the bull down and make plan to get the horses.
We hike out grab some food and the ponies
Ridge gets a ride on Bo. Mama comes and picks him up . Me and Jace head back to get the bull .
Few hours later we are back and loaded up!!
Long days . Worth every step!!
Well done as always Hunt.
Little after pack out treat Jace had !!
Best of luck to all this season!! Thanks for following along.
