Who here is a fan of big 8 pointers?

Well check out this 8 pointer Wade Robinson shot in Iowa. They say it goes 188. Not sure how much of that is stickers and that drop tine.

That would work.

Wow!!! Congratulations to Wade.

Here in Arkansas that is a 27 point!!!

16-Oct-22
Agree, not an 8 pointer

From: Michael
16-Oct-22
Some see all the sticker points and drop time. They then add up all points and that’s what the deer is.

While others over look the stickers and drop tine and focus on the 8 point frame.

From: fastflight
16-Oct-22
Although that is technically a base 8 I picture something cleaner looking than that if I am going to call it an 8 pointer.

From: drycreek

Them I-oh-way boys got some big bucks. Give him another year !

From: t-roy
16-Oct-22
It’s gonna be scored (if it does get officially scored) as a typical mainframe 8 point, with a bunch of nontypical points. Looks like it has plenty of nontypical inches to qualify as a nontypical, as well. I would describe it exactly that way, if I was explaining it to a friend. The typical aspect of the frame looks to not have many side to side deductions, as well.

From: Michael
16-Oct-22
Another interesting thing about the deer is they say it was a clean 8 point frame last year and they had him at 140’s. Pretty good jump in 1 year of total inches.

From: Catscratch
16-Oct-22
I call those an "8 with trash (or stickers) and a drop". If it had a main point broken off I would call it a "broken up 8".

Whatever you call it I think it's an amazing buck! Very cool!

From: Shug
16-Oct-22
t-Roy exactly why you never see the majority of tv guys officially score animals… It’s just easier to say 200” when it’s 185 if ya don’t have it verified…

Beautiful buck either way… but not 188” 8 point…

From: t-roy
16-Oct-22
Any other views of the buck, Michael? My guess would be that the typical part of the rack would tally somewhere in the mid-150s, possibly a touch better. Hard to tell on the beam length, from the pic. I wouldn’t be passing on him unless I knew he was a younger deer. Lots of character on him.

EDIT: …..we were typing at the same time, Shug. I agee. I’m not seeing 188”, unless he has several additional points on the back side of the bases/beams.

From: deerhunter72
16-Oct-22
I do think “mainframe” 8 is a more appropriate term for this buck. I have a good friend who killed a non typical 220” mainframe 8 that had matching 12” drop tines and a bunch of other “trash”. This is a very impressive buck no matter what you call him!

T - Roy I can look if need be. I just seen the video the Drurys did on You tube of the deer and found that pic to post here.

I was thinking if the deer had a total of 188 it didn’t have much over 30” of stickers and that drop tine. That would put the frame in the high 150’s. To me an 8 that is over 150 is big. If I remember right they said the deer was 6.5 years old. To each there own.

Beautiful animal, many congrats to the hunter!

Speaking of scoring basic main frame 8-points, I think there is only a handful of true clean 4x4s in B&C, but there are gobs of 5x4s where the G4 is a wash...

Very cool buck and a great one to shoot, but Even with all the non-typical points I don't see that deer going 188. I am coming up with low to mid 140's for typical 8 score. and there are not that many inches of non-typical score. He is really long arming in the pic and the camera is really close to the deers head so that makes it very hard to accurately tell.

From: Grey Ghost
17-Oct-22
I'd call the buck in the OP a main frame 8 with a bunch of extra stickers and a drop tine. Not that it matters what you call it. It's still one helluva buck.

Matt

From: Bake
17-Oct-22
It's a main frame 8 with trash and a drop. I have no problem calling it that to hunters who know what I'm talking about and understand.

If I was describing it to a non-hunter I'd call it a 20 pointer. But I try to never talk hunting with non-hunters. Just ticks me off. "You could deer hunt off my back porch." "I killed one with a car." Hardy-har-har-har. . . . . I'm going to just start saying "You obviously don't get what drives me. And I don't want to talk to you anymore."

From: Michael
17-Oct-22
That’s where I was going with this thread. I have always been impressed with big 8 point frames.

I am with the guys that see an 8 point frame with a bunch of stickers and drop tine.

This deer just adds to the “they tend to trash up when they get some age on them.”

The OP's picture is a main-Frame 8 with "Non-Typical" points and a drop. I don't call it a sticker if it's longer than 1". At least that's the way I was taught to measure, but, I'm not an official measurer so...

Here's my best archery whitetail kill that's a " what if " big 8-point frame. Southwest Kansas buck with 26 inch beams, 6 inch plus bases, 14.25 inch G2's and grosses over the magic 170 mark. However, the flyer/fork on his left G2 and the in-line/non-typical G4 on his right antler keep his net score just below 170.

Hey ki-ke! Haven’t seen you on here for awhile! Good to see you on here again, brother!

Actually nicknamed that guy “Harley” (Fatboy) Only had a couple of pics, and one sighting of him, before I killed him on Halloween morning. The pics were taken with one of the old style 35mm trail-cams. He was a big bodied rascal, for sure. His body kinda made his rack look a bit smaller that it really was. He grossed 163”. Biggest bodied whitetail I’ve ever killed.

I’ve got one on camera that I think would possibly go 260-275 dressed. Unfortunately, he would probably only score 130” or so. His nickname is, of course, “Fat Bastard” ;-)

The point I was trying to make was hoping to view some nice true clean basic main frame 4x4s (small stickers okay) , but every time a thread like this comes up, people post main frame 5x4s... Oh well, so much for 4x4s...

Wow, you guys killed some dandy 8-points, CONGRATS!

With these 8-point and 6-point threads main beam 4x and 3x antlers, have a question for measurers - On a 4 point main beam, there are 5 circumferences' measured, right? One between base and brow, one between brow and G2, one between G2 and G3, and since there is not a G4, one halfway from tip to G3... Is this correct? And on a 3 point main frame, one between base and brow, one between brow and G2, and halfway from tip to G2 gets counted twice?

Zbone…..You only get 4 circumference measurements per side, irregardless if it is an 8 pointer or a 10-12-14 etc pointer. I’m not certain about a 6 point, but I think you get four as well.

I am not a measurer. However, there are only 4 circumference measurements for each side. I believe this applies to all the deer, sheep, pronghorn, etc. 4 per side, always.

Oops, I counted wrong... Yeah, 4 not 5, my bad... So a 3-point main beam one between base and brow, one between brow and G2, and halfway from tip to G2 gets counted twice... That counts 4...

Say on a big forky, one between base and brow (G1) , and the halfway from G1 brow to tip, multiplied 3 times... On a giant spike 8^)))), halfway from base to tip 4 times...8^)

So there was a question earlier on in this thread of what determines whether an official measurer will measure as a typical or non-typical. The rule for the Pope and Young club states that a whitetail deer must have 15” (5” for coues whitetail) of abnormal points to meet the requirements for non-typical and that if it meets that 15” threshold, then it must be entered as a non-typical.

Was going through computer files looking for something else and came across this photo... It was over 20 years ago, (that's how far back I was into the files...8^)) and can't remember how I acquired the photo and don't have much info on it, only the year 2001, Hillsdale Co MI, highest scoring 4x4 at the time, netted 180-3/8"... I assume it was a gun kill... If correct, there has since been a least one another that scored higher...

I assume this one is the top 4x4... Notes I had on it - the buck’s net score of 183-1/8 would rank as the largest 4x4 ever submitted to B&C... IL gun kill...

My dad killed this 8 Pt back in the 70s up in N Minnesota. I had it remounted and it hangs in the local Sportsman’s Warehouse.

I’ve never scored it - any thoughts about what it would score?

Here is a great 9 point in a terrible picture from many years ago. It scored as an 8 point. It went into P&Y at a little over 166. It grossed a little over 170. It was extremely symmetrical. It had the same number of inches on each side. It took 4 inches on one side and put it on a 9th point.

Supposedly grossed a shade over 190” and netted 185”. Unbelievable 8 pointer, for sure!

This is the buck poached in Mn. It would have been the largest 8 pointer ever scored. It went 188”. If I remember right the guy used his wife’s tag on the deer. The deer was shot by Cannon Falls MN. Just SE of the twin cities.

There are a number of articles to be had on the web of the deer.

I can’t tell if Zbone’s pics are the same deer or not. They look different to me.

Same buck, Michael. Easiest way for me to tell is comparing the the right g3 In both pics.

I stopped by a taxidermist shop, just today. He had a clean 8 point mount on his wall, that he said it grossed a touch over 180”. From the looks of it, I don’t doubt it.
