Big-Bighorn Sheep -Rut Photos
Wild Sheep

Found some sheep this morning and they were starting to act rutty. Oh, I wish I had a tag for this unit when it opens in a couple weeks. There is a video at end of photos of sheep running all over the place kind of crazy to watch.
I don’t guess I’ve ever noticed that big dark gland right by their tear duct in their eye. Is this something that gets more prominent as they get rutty such as the tarsal gland in bucks?
Thanks for these great pictures.. I dont think I ever really seen sheep this close up and clear.... Question.. When they say a full curl, where is the start/stop point to say it's a full curl? Based off the second picture, would that be considered a full curl??
Great photos and video. Thanks for sharing.
This is what I come here for. Love it
Fields this should help.
Boggs I assume yes, but first time I gotten in on them close during rut.
Wow!!! Thanks for the awesome pics and thanks for sharing!!! Sheep are really cool!
Best sheep pics on Bowsite since BB’s back in the day.
I was hoping you would post up John when I started my thread earlier this week.
Luv your pix man,
Robb

That is called a lacrimal gland. Whitetails have it too. Even humans have it.
It actually IS what produces tears and keeps the eyes moistened. Does not seem related to seasonal or hormonal changes like the rut. It is particularly deep in some mammals. Especially caribou and moose here in the North.
Its secondary function (in my opinion,) is to drive taxidermists nuts! Because hunters skinning too fast often slice through it and mess up the cape!

Very nice photos- thanks for sharing.
Great pics, thanks for posting!
Stunning pics as usual, thanks for sharing with us!
Magnificent animals.
Awesome pictures John!! keep posting them!
Fields—. There are multiple definitions of “full curl” in sheep. For a legal definition in hunting you need to consult the wildlife department of the state/province.
Some will be through an imaginary line like CO, some will be past bridge of nose like BC, or some will be a real 360* circle back to the base like AK
So Cool John Thanks really enjoyed your pics of wildlife. The video was really cool!
Great pics, reminiscent of BB’s threads.
Thanks guy. I took some deer shots yesterday. See if I can get them posted up this week.
Nice pics John. I don't think they could get ANY better, especially when transferring from camera onto a web site. Simply outstanding.
John, I’m going to add a few of my own from this past weekend if that’s okay?
If you’ve never seen them play this game then you are missing one of life’s funniest experiences..especially if you have a sophomoric sense of humor like me:)
Great pics, both of you! Thanks.
Nice pics brotsky. Those SD sheep?
They are SD sheep John. I found some of the larger rams on Sunday morning but my camera battery was dead from the cold :(
Brotsky, Are those Elk Mountain sheep?
Darrell, this is the Hell Canyon herd.
