It was the day before the Opener and that is my scouting/glassing/hiking morning, so I leave in the dark to get where I want to be glassing from by first horizon.

About a 30 minute drive @ 55 mph, no rush relax and enjoy the drive.

A Jackrabbit or two runs across the pavement but I've got all my driving lights on and I most of the time can catch them before they get on the pavement.

Sometimes in the past I have seen elk on the pavement or just off to the side .

Then a very quick blurr and Bam!

Something, I'm thinking a Yote, I hit with my truck.

But as it goes Airborne, I see it has a big thick-n-long tail.

It's a Mnt. Lion.

So I go to one of the Highway/emergency turn arounds and drive back down, repeat through a turn around and slowly drive back up to where I hit it.

Hardly any traffic this early, so I see it off the pavement in the median.

I get a mile marker # and continue with my morning plans.

Later after making a few phone calls, I go back and get a few pix ect.

That’s one in a million!

That’s one way of managing predators!!!!!

Sorry about your luck buddy. No matter what it is, it sucks to run over things unexpectedly.

Figuring about 60-70 lbs as it was dragged out of the meridian and 2 1/2-3 years old.

I get razzed for doing extra stuff to my truck, but I think by getting my front-end bumper -guard powder coated before installing saved me some major paint damage ect.

I did have to re-adjust one of my side tilt driving lights and a little cleaning up but all is well.

Good luck, Robb

Is there any way to legally take ownership of it? Did you investigate?

Wow! Definitely not something that happens everyday! Glad you’re ok and no damage to your truck either, Robb!

I’ve killed a lot of cats with my truck by accident over the years, but they’ve all been domestic and on our farm lol

This one is a way cooler story!!! I can only imagine when you noticed that big long tail swing around

No Sir, not even close to I-40?

Two lane road out of the Navajo Nations Reservation rt. 64.

It might have had a tattoo ---Iowa or Bust.....

Greg it was a rifle hunt so I'll prolly do a re-cap on M&M.

I had no interest in keeping it or buying a non-ressy tag so I could keep it. Reason being I already have a dandy Tom in my T-Room and I don't need two!! haha

Good luck, Robb

Oh come on do a recap here Robb. People don’t wanna read a rifle hunt they don’t have to!! Lol

glad that cat didn't do more damage.

i had a job that required lots of travel in rural eastern oregon. i come across this road kill cat in 2019. it seemed like it was there only a day or two.

over about a decade, i recall three occasions where cats cross the road in front of me. it was always early in the morning right around daylight. one of them was quite large and stood up out of some tall grass as i stopped to look at elk and deer in a field. apparently, he was watching them too.

I've had on separate occasions; 2 Grizzly Bears cross a dirt road in front of me over the years in Wyoming and 1 Black Bear in Colorado but never a Mnt. Lion anywhere.

Good for you RonP.

I did get one of my early magazine articles from my harvested Mnt. Lion. The old .58 caliber w/patch and ball and a #11 percussion cap, like 60-70 yards accuracy. Hell, guys shoot bows that far now a days.

Good luck, Robb

My buddy in Redding sent me a pick of a Mountain lion hit on the road to Lassen….it must have been 150# plus…but we cant hunt them so they are over populated in CA

04-Dec-22
Neat story. I have had two Mt Lions run across in front my my truck in the past 6 years here in Colorado. The last one, last year just west of Ft. Collins. Cool animals and hunting machines. Paul

We had one in my home state on local game cameras they figure came from SD. He made it to CT before he was hit and killed on a highway. The DNA from scat, hair etc. matched. Gives one an idea of their range...
