An Ankeny couple famous for their hunting videos on YouTube pleaded guilty in federal court this month to conspiring to break a federal wildlife protection law.

Josh Bowmar, 32, and Sarah Bowmar, 33, were among dozens of defendants charged in a poaching case after they went on hunting tours guided by Broken Arrow, Nebraska-based Hidden Hills Outfitters, between Sept. 10, 2015, and Nov. 6, 2017. Hidden Hills owner Jacob Hueftle was indicted on charges that its 118 clients from 21 states hunted primarily by using illegal bait traps to attract white-tailed deer.

Hueftle was also charged with killing hawks, falcons and other protected non-game migratory birds, according to the indictment. Hueftle was sentenced in 2020 to 30 months in federal prison. His father, Hidden Hills Outfitters co-owner Nolan Hueftle, was sentenced to five years probation last year.

Josh and Sarah Bowmar, a celebrity husband-and-wife hunting duo, recently made a plea deal in a high-profile poaching case. The team was charged in 2020 with five counts of hunting violations, including hunting wild turkeys without a valid permit, illegally transporting game across state lines, and baiting wildlife. The couple initially pleaded not-guilty on all counts. On October 19, the Bowmars withdrew pleas of not guilty on all charges and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act, as first reported by Gear Junkie. As part of the plea deal, all remaining charges were dropped.

Yup here he is with a previous 200” buck he killed. Shot it far back walking and the worse part is he locates it in the dark doesn’t gut it and leaves it for a nice day time pic. He then brings it home still ungutted just to put it on a scale and brag about its size. A very hard hunt in his cushy blind. This is what’s wrong with hunting today. The guy is a complete tool bag and after reading all the comments on his video not one person mentioned leaving the buck until morning ungutted.

From: MQQSE

Tool bag, douche bag, clown, etc… I’m sure he is all of that and more. My question, knowing whitetails the way I do and owning IA and MO farms is, where do you even find 6 200+ inch deer? We see the 170-180 type bucks each year, but 200 is the true outlier of the statistical whitetail population bell curve.

From: Shrewski
29-Dec-22
No respect for anything that clown or anyone associated with him does. Smoke, mirrors, and cheating in everything they do.

29-Dec-22
You guys are embarrassing yourselves. He has private property and the resources/money to grow big deer..passes on huge deer so they become GIANTS, so you’re going to hate on him for that. There are several well respected hunters on this site and around the world that put down big deer on their own property yr in and yr out. The guy just put down a Giant with a long bow! He obviously puts in serious work. He is a physical freak of nature. I’m going to stroke his ego a little bit more and say businessman. He has people buying colored grip tape, peep sites, and nose buttons. The 3 cheapest things to make and he’s selling millions of them to fund his hunting obsession. Spare the man crush jokes while typing from your Mom’s basement. Give the guy some credit for harvesting World Class animals.

From: spike78
29-Dec-22
8’s good on him for his success but the video I posted shows his lack of respect for the game he hunts. It’s all about the antlers and nothing more. Shooting massive deer on your own land that you manage in a state that grows massive deer is as impressive as me shooting a 110” on public here in MA. The most impressive part about him is his willingness to pass those bucks and let them become massive.

Guy seems questionable but it’s interesting when legitimate hunters enter animals in the record book and are accused of doing it for ego. The feedback is it’s not about the hunter it’s about honoring the animal itself.

So here we have a guy who’s clearly taken a fantastic animal a world-class animal and no one‘s recognizing the animal it’s all the hunter

So, which is it ……….when a hunter share their results are we to focus on the animal And what it was or the hunter who killed it be he good or bad

I don’t know this guy. And so won’t bad mouth him. But I could not care less about his 200” deer. I get more out of seeing the Bowsite guys kids with 80- 100” deer on the 2022 meat pole, taken with a bow, crossbow or rifle.

That doesn’t mean it’s not a great deer.

Bou unfortunately the two can't be separated. There's so much stink on this guy it taints all his accomplishments even if some are impressive, such as letting mature deer walk. He's proven he'll lie, cheat, or steal for fame and publicity plus let's not forget money. Just the kind of guy who I could see shooting farm raised deer and claiming as wild, remember the Rompola buck. His accomplishments will never stack up to men like Chuck Adams, Randy Ulmer, Wensel brothers, and on and on who have worked so hard to keep everything above board and who are driven by a love and passion for nature not likes on the gram.

From: 320Bull

Sorry to all the kneepad wearing fan boys... But he was found guilty of violating the LAcey act. Why the other charges were dropped, don't know. He's a proben liar and game thief. He has zero credibility. Except in the FB, IG, and YouTube world.

I state repeatedly that this constant social media chase for age class, inches, and idiotic hit list names will ruin hunting, the North American Game management model. And I'm chastised for it. We get chastised for not Ooo-ing and ah-ing over a fantastic deer taken by a narcissistic game thief.

Bou, you may be correct but being on private land with a ton of food and in Iowa the trophy deer Mecca and allowed to live for 6 years I’d say that deer would be far more impressive if it was elsewhere on public land. For all we know with his money he could have bought a couple farm raised monsters to reproduce. He shot what like 5 200” deer? I highly doubt he has the skill of other well known hunters to pull that one off without some sort of upper hand.

I can see 200, but I'll take Shug's word for it as he has scored a LOT more deer than I ever will.

I agree with him as well, back 5-10 years ago, when I actually watched some of the shows, it was the big thing to call a buck a "gross booner". Which isn't even a thing. . . . Bou,

"Undebatable but unfortunately also unrecognized here by guys who know what a rarity it is."

Not sure who you mean....but pretty much everyone has said what an exceptional buck it is. The fact it was killed by a criminal, a game thief, a poacher (ya charges dropped) seems lost on you.

The only thing more mind boggling here than the people thinking steroid boy has taken 6-200”+ wild whitetails fair chase is those that have not figured out that Boubound is the king of sarcasm. If you can manage to wade thru the thick layer of sarcasm in his every post, there is a nugget of wisdom every now and then. It does get tiring but if you don’t figure it out you will drive yourself mad…

29-Dec-22
Spike- The Skill is killing a mature deer like most have done, pure luck that a mature deer has the genetics to produce a giant set of antlers. The hardest part about killing a 200” deer is getting a 200” deer to live on your property.

From: Bou'bound

Bowbender reread posts from the top end tell me if you still stand by the comment that “ pretty much everyone commented on the quality of the buck”. Iowa watch some of his 200” kill videos on YouTube. Their was no hard hunt involved in any. The last one I watched he said he put in a lot of time which consisted of checking cameras from his jeep and claiming he knew where he bedded on a farm. He killed him on his first sit the next day after spending four hours cutting shooting lanes and setting up a stand. Give me a break I spend day after day humping hills in MA just to kill a small buck. His hunting ain’t hunting it’s a joke. Another video I watched he had a farmer leave a small square of standing corn he hunted in a box blind had 26 deer come to it and shot his buck. A damn 13 year old could hunt that.

29-Dec-22
Prior to this I had only heard of this guy from bowsite when he speared the bear and then egregiously broke a bunch of game laws. It's my understanding he did not man up and take responsibility for those infractions either. He entered a plea deal and made it seem that because the charges were dropped it meant that he did not break the law. It seems to me he is a law breaking deer farmer, not a hunter. These are the people that anti groups like HSUS latch onto in an attempt to paint us all with a broad brush. Oh yeah, that's one hell of a deer.

29-Dec-22
Spike- if it’s so easy how come there isn’t a bunch of guys with 6 200” deer. Would you feel better about it it it took him all season and 75 hunts to get it done, I doubt it

Great deer. Would be a better story if some highschool kid that bucked bales all summer to buy a bow would have killed it.

From: Dale06

Someone said something to the effect, “ if it’s so easy to shoot 200” deer, why isn’t there more in the book.” I’m guessing there’s a lot that have been killed and never entered in the book. I know of more than one (not me).

30-Dec-22
Dale06- just because there are a lot that have been killed but never entered does not mean it is easy to kill one. As I’ve said before, the hard part about killing one, is having one on your property. Anybody that has killed a mature buck could have killed a 200 incher if that deer had the superior genetics. Spike- if you talk to landowners here in Iowa, most would tell you that the 200” deer is rare

From: Dale06
30-Dec-22
Iowa Booner, we agree. It’s not easy to kill a 200” deer. Actually it’s impossible lots of places, cause they don’t exist. But the “book” is not an accurate indicator of 200” deer being killed, cause some never get entered.

30-Dec-22

From: spike78
30-Dec-22
Iowa, yes a 200” deer is rare so how did he manage to kill 6 of them?

From: KB
30-Dec-22
Are they really that rare if you have total control over sizable acres in the right part of the world and don’t kill them when they’re 180? (Lakosky’s, Drury’s, Whitetail Properties top dogs, etc). If he bought the land in the right place and provided the habitat to grow all 6 or 7 then good for him. If he’s dangling $25k in front of every outfitter in the area for the whereabouts to a 200” buck, then it’s a much different story and probably more in line with his typical program it seems. And further, as has been mentioned, 200” bucks are exceedingly less rare when you don’t actually officially score them. Weird how that works.

30-Dec-22
One in Ohio, one in Missouri and only 4 in Iowa. How did Adam Hayes kill 4, Adam Crumrin2, Don Higgins 3, Stan Potts 4, Mark Drury had 3 and Lee Lakosky has I believe 3

I'm not a fan of Bowmar, think he is a relentless self-promoter and people like that irritate me greatly. Don't agree with the ethics displayed in some of his videos either, but I'm also not going to jump to the conclusion that it's unbelievable he's killed that many 200" deer unless he's doing something illegal. Depending on your definition of "rare", I wouldn't necessarily agree that 200" gross deer are rare in southern Iowa. Particularly in highly managed "neighborhoods" where a couple thousand acres might be under the control of people who pass up 170" 4 year old bucks to let them get *really* big. I've heard about a number of 200" deer from friends who've lived here a lot longer than I have and are not given to exaggeration. Never seen a 200" inch buck here myself, but I have pictures of a buck approaching 190" range this year and multiple 170"ish bucks on the same property in the last 12 months, and there is no management on that property at all. Them "being there" and actually "killing one" are 2 different things, though. At least it's easier to stay in a tree knowing what's in the neighborhood and might walk past at any moment. Never ceases to amaze me though how they survive from one year to the next having to run the gauntlet of 2 shotgun seasons where guys are pushing what seems like about every inch of cover.

From: Knifeman
30-Dec-22
Swampbuck, Howard Hill bows have glass on the limbs. Are they not longbows? Yes, it is a longbow that the asshat is holding. He should stick to crossguns, seem more his speed lol.

@Rattling in the US. certain states have formed an association, or agreement that if you are prosecuted for a wildlife offense in "State A" it applies in all the other states that are part of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact association. In short, it prevents you from getting busted in one state and saying "Ah, I'll just go hunt in another state"

So it looks like he could go do a live hunt in Massachusetts, or Hawaii as they are not part of the association. I'm betting we some sweet hunts of a certain chick in a bikini!

From: Native Okie

GG, I just read the plea agreements and didn’t see that specifically in the agreement. Article IV of the agreement states it’s between the US attorney office and state of Nebraska, not binding any other federal or state entity. That may be misinterpreted as such, but I’m not seeing it.

From: Bou'bound
14-Jan-23
Scrappy That’s what bodybuilders do. It’s what fuels them. There is no modesty among them and they want others to see it.

From: Grey Ghost
14-Jan-23
Native Okie, this was discussed on an earlier thread when the plea agreement was announced. Several sources indicated that Article IV specifically eliminated the wildlife violators compact from applying. I think Bowmar himself may have even mentioned that in his public announcement afterwards, but my memory is a little foggy on that. The fact that the Bowmars hunted last year in their home state indicates that their hunting ban only applied to Nebraska.

Matt

From: Native Okie
14-Jan-23
I think that’s standard language utilized, it wasn’t in the specific plea portion of the agreement. In just reading around how the compact works, it’s still to each states discretion how they handle if they are submitted in the database. However, that’s my own interpretation. I would be surprised if that was part of the plea.

From: Jaquomo
14-Jan-23
"Bowmar also is facing charges of reckless use of a firearm or explosive in Clarke County for a "controlled burn" that got out of control on April 10 last year. Bowmar started the fire on his property "despite extremely strong winds and dry conditions,” according to a lawsuit filed Oct. 18 by Brian and Susan Crites, who live in Waukee and own land that neighbors Bowmar's. The fire spread to the Crites' land and burned down a cabin. The criminal case is set to go to trial in April."

From: Grey Ghost
14-Jan-23

Grey Ghost's Link
Native Okie, I think your interpretation may be wrong, unfortunately. This is a quote from the link above:

"One interesting point to note in this case is that as part of the penalty, Bowmar cannot hunt in Nebraska for the entire term of his probation, which is one year. The plea document specifically states “limited to within the District of Nebraska, as a special condition” of the probation term. Typically, when a person loses their hunting privileges in a specific state for a wildlife violation, they also lose them in all states as part of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact. That does not appear to be the case here."

I know the word "appear" leaves it open for speculation, however. Obviously Iowa didn't care if they hunted last year.

Matt

From: Native Okie
14-Jan-23

Native Okie's Link
I’m not sure if that’s a “special condition” or not. Link to actual plea below. Again, the compact states still have discretion to my understanding. I would think it’s typical for a legal agreement to not bind other federal entities or states in an agreement. I know in business law, such business units are typically limited to being party to such agreement and is called out similarly.

From: Grey Ghost
14-Jan-23
Thanks, I've read the plea a few times. I'm basing much of my interpretation on the fact that the Bowmars hunted in Iowa last year, so obviously the ban didn't apply there. They also posted a video of Sarah Bowmar killing a big buck in Missouri about a month ago, so it didn't apply there, either. Basically, it appears to me they got away with a fine and a slap on the wrist regarding hunting privileges. .

Matt

From: t-roy
14-Jan-23
GG…..I’m thinking one possibility that they were still able to hunt was because the ruling on their case wasn’t rendered until January 12th. Not sure if that’s the case…..just speculating. In any case, it’s disappointing that Nebraska doesn’t seem to be on board with the other states, in regards to illegal wildlife violations .

From: fdp
14-Jan-23
The answer would be found in the actual conditions of supervision/probation. One of the conditions would address the loss of the privilege.

From: JohnMC
14-Jan-23
Troy - I maybe be wrong but I think the charges were federal not from the State of NE. That maybe part of the reason if the hunting ban does not apply in 48 states.

From: WhattheFOC
14-Jan-23
Pretty weak. A hunting ban in one state that isn’t even your home state - not much of a ban at all.

From: Native Okie
14-Jan-23
So I just asked a Game Warden friend here in Oklahoma as he posted on social media about the case. He said specifically if he has his rights revoked in a state within the compact, he is revoked in all states party to the compact.

Again, I don’t believe that was carved out in the plea.

From: Scrappy
14-Jan-23
Is it just coincidence that his plea deal was on the 12th, two days after iowa's deer season closes. Guess time will tell if the compact states also suspended their license. He best go get him some advice from old Spook about setting the world on fire.

The steroid comments are pathetic as Josh is a natural body builder and has won the Arnold Classic a few times. Being convicted and being guilty are 2 ENTIRELY different things. How many of you have gone on a guided hunt. Would you really know if your guide was breaking the law, all in the interest of gaining clients? No you would not, but you could still be convicted if you hunted with them. During the trial, Hamberlin tried to convince the jury that he had shot the buck in Arizona because he could provide a legal tag for that region. However, evidence collected during the investigation discovered Hamberlin’s buck was actually shot in Utah where he did not have a legal permit.

Hatch was found guilty of obstruction of justice for hiding his phone and the buck’s head. He also provided false information to law enforcement during the investigation. "

“How do we fix it is question I have.”

Just like baiting, it’s come too far and will never go backwards.

^^^ but as long as there are tens of thousands of followers of the narcissists who make, post, and profit from tasteless hunting videos that turn off the voting public, it will only get worse.

The train has left the station.

“Well, she definitely looks better going than coming.”

Oh… you mean direction of travel. I was wondering how you knew….. ;)

“I will not be happy or entertain people who break the law to achieve success, it's that simple. Fan boys enabling it and stroking egos are just as much at fault.”

Does that include politicians?

Of course I’m one of those crazy Independents who looks at behavior first and party second….

My ex-wife has the same attention seeking disorder as Mrs. Bomar above and may have even competed against her. As you can imagine, I have zero desire date to these types of women as I have also worked with several that do these "competitions" and the marriages rarely work out.

Back in the day, my wife of 33 years had an ass like that. It’s still nice for her age. But you won’t find pictures of it plastered all over the internet. Just saying…

Mine works out every day and still has that, but no internet pics for her either, except for maybe a hunting hero shot now and then. Seems wrong to put your wife's ass on the World Wide Web to generate clicks and make money. Kind of like low grade pimping.

T-roy- No, but some of those Ukranians are pretty. Probably easier to deal with than my ex. She'll be back on the market in a month or two if you're interested because she's fixing to wrap up her 2nd divorce.

Haha, GreyGhost that's hilarious, I guess you're wife doesn't mind that you are describing her ass on a public forum?

It is my ex. Ksflatlander, I have certainly moved on and happier than I've been in 6 years. Im very familiar with her current divorce proceedings because her new ex husband reached out to me last March when everything began to dissolve. He and I share a common doctor friend that we both duckhunt with. Reason I posted it is because of T-roys jabs at who I date, except this one I was married to for ten years. Only thing creepy on this site is your narcissistic, know it all behavior and posting pictures of half your face because you're afraid. Now go be afraid with Frank and hold his hand.

Can’t argue with taste, but:

I don’t get why some men like their women to look like a young teenage boy on ‘ roids
