Filled my last tag yesterday. Big group of deer came past. Things happened fast. I picked out a nice one that didn’t seem to be with a fawn. Was surprised to find it was an antlerless buck. In hind sight maybe I should have saw that. One pedicle was healed over the other was shed more recently. Nice sized deer with good amounts of fat in the body cavity. Upon gutting the deer I was surprised to see how small the heart was. In my experience about 1/2 the size of the heart in a similarly sized deer. This is the 1st deer in my area on cameras that has shed. Wonder if this underdeveloped heart may be why he’s ahead of the rest in shedding this year???

Eat the heart

I always eat them. Favorite part of a deer. Would actually prefer heart over tenderloin. Tenderloins are marinating right now. I never waste one. Was small & pointed on the end. Seemed to taste stronger than most. Seemed odd to me. I’ll be paying attention for any other irregularities when I butcher this one.
