This will be my 5th year (I think) doing this thread. I have added a link to 2021 above if anyone is interested.
Last year I think I posted about 50 pics, this year I have almost 150, So if I get long and boring I don’t blame you for checking out! I’m gonna do the year in chronological order, then finish up with some random pics from the year.
I finished up 2021 with MX coues deer. Then went straight to ARkansas for a quick duck hunt with some buddies. So I’m gonna start it off with a non-Bowhunting trip. Sorry about that, but plenty of Bowhunting to come.

ARkansas magic
ARkansas magic
Sunrise from the blind and the ducks were already flying. We had a great first day with lots of action. Variety of ducks, but the highlight was the pintails for sure!
The second day was even better, full 6 man limit with a full limit of pins again.
Good fun with the boys. Mako the dog didn’t want to cooperate with the pics though
Ace and I did a little stomping around the woods in Feb, I found a shed and Ace looked the other way…
Then it was time to hit the road in mid March. TX is a great state for “off season” hunting adventure. This was the first of 3 for my winter/spring.
Palo Verde Canyon in the TX panhandle is a really cool place.
I started off with a nanny, this is a medium size female, much bigger ones around, but many had kids, so I was careful which I was shooting. Good start to the trip.
Nice…Good to see you finished strong South of the border. I tried to leave you a bunch of big ones on your first stop!
Was able to get get a nice spot and stalk pig down too. Messed up a good opportunity on a coyote too.
Was able to get on a group and got this nice ram at 30 yards after a morning of cat and mouse.
Another pig added to the list.
And another nanny to round out the week. It was only about 200 feet down right there.
Total Archery Challenge came to Oklahoma for the first time the beginning of April. Group of guys went down and had a fun day slinging arrows.
Had some pigs on camera on one of my leases, but pretty hit and miss and mainly at night.
Ace and I did some stuff around the house and hunting spots. Feeding pigs, checking cameras, a little burning, and a bit of horn hunting.
My good friend Bake has invited me to MO to hunt turkeys each spring and one I look forward to every year. Only had a couple days this year but second morning a take i shot and come up a little short, and he was short a few tail feathers too!
MO turkey hunting ends at 1pm, so afternoons fishing makes for even more fun.
Mid morning on the last day we had a group of Jakes came in to the decoys and I decided a Jake was better than a tag!
Oklahoma changed up the season and bag limits a little, so I just got my one bird, and maybe all I could have got, seemed a little slow for me this year.
After my turkey tag was filled I tried for some pigs, but they wouldn’t cooperate. Stupid pigs.
An unseasonably warm May found me in TX chasing free range Axis deer. I was sweating balls, and apparently the deer were too, lots of hours over 3 days yielded but one sighting.
Run home and work for a week and pick up my buddy, then back down to TX. We took a little 3 day trip to chase feral goats and pigs on a different ranch. Hot weather made it tough again, but we scratched a couple out. Cool ranch and a fun weekend.
My buddy was able to connect in a cool Billie, and I was able to scratch out one pig.
Ace and I enjoy spring and summer evenings catching a few little bass.
I never did get a “Thank You” card for leaving all the pigs and the bigger sheep for you in Texas. Good stuff, so far, but you better type faster, cuz I’m sure you’re leaving for yet another hunt in a couple of days….
Finally the first part of June I was able to connect with a big OK boar. I really enjoyed my summer chasing these guys around.
End of June I flew up to SD for another Total Archery Challenge with a group of Bowsite guys. We had a house for the weekend and had a great time on the mountain and off!
The last day a couple guys had to leave early, but Justin, Nick, and I finished it out strong!

In July another airplane took me west to California for a little Mako shark bowfishing out of Huntington Beach with a couple good buddies.

The second day I was up to shoot. We had a real giant come in. The captain guessed him at 900-1000 lbs. I got a good arrow in him, and we fought for 2.5 hours. Unfortunately he made a long run, a big twisting jump and got on my line above the leader and broke off.
I was home a couple weeks and Ace and I snuck out to move a pig set-up. It took about 10 days for him to find it, and by then I had to go to British Columbia.
About the second week of September I headed off on a real Adventure hunt. 2 weeks in northern British Columbia with a pocket full of tags and a heavy pack. Beaver flight in to a little dinky high mountain lake. Had to hike out, because they couldn’t get us out of that lake.
Some glassing and bear chasing the first night got thing started right. We found 5 billies, with 3 shooters in a big bowl.

My outfitter/guide/friend Ryan who made it all happen.
My outfitter/guide/friend Ryan who made it all happen.
On the 4th day the dream was realized. Archery mountain goat at 25 yards. One arrow though the lungs. Down in 80 yards.
None too soon, I will make no excuses, but I was not in shape, and I was already starting to wear down in those big mountains. Worked out perfectly.
Spent another night in the high country, then headed down to the extract lake with heavy packs the next morning.
About time you quit hunting for a few minutes to do this.
We spent the night at the lake after a HEAVY hike out thought some nasty brush. Nice quiet night on the water, which yielded to a grunting moose at the far end the next morning. After deciding he was a shooter and headed to Ryan’s calls I moved into position. But in our hasty plan I misunderstood the ambush position and stopped about 100 yards short. Later we found his tracks exactly where Ryan told me to get to, but I wasn’t there…
We already had the beaver coming to get us for a hop over to a better moose spot. They arrived early afternoon. A beautiful day for flying!
We hopped over a few mountains to grab a canoe and some moose camp provisions (real food). Then back out into the bush. With a little more robust camp we were set for a few days.
These BC pics are just frickin outstanding!
Only slightly better than the one with you in them Nick!
After a couple days of slow moose action we finally got the wind we really wanted and a nice cool calm morning. Ryan’s calling got one going first thing, but he faded. We kept after it and this guy came running straight to the call about an hour later. He came just as I expected and i put a perfect arrow right behind his shoulder from 16 yards! He was down in about 120 and an easy pack out back to the canoe. Just as we all imagine it!
The beaver couldn’t get us for a couple days, and was gonna have to make at least 2 trips, so we packed up camp, and stashed the meat and started to hike out. It was long and brushy, but down hill mostly. And we covered a lot of it with the canoe. Back to base camp that night for some warm cabins and yummy frozen pizzas!
We had one more full day till Ryan’s next hunter was coming in so I said let’s ride some Forrest roads and see if we can whack a couple of Grouse and see what we see. We didn’t get an early start, but early enough for a few hours on the Quad. Just before we left I decided I better take one arrow with a broad head. That was a good decision!
A lucky end to an incredible couple week. I spotted this bear crossing the 2 track in front of us while Ryan was dodging potholes. We stopped and he crested the hill and I gave it a running stalk. When I got there he has his head down feeding and i snuck a bit further and got a good arrow in him at 20 yards, dead in 40!
But we didn’t get any grouse…
Cool pics thanks for sharing. I’ve been lucky enough to kill 2 moose but I’m really jealous with the goat. Should be able to draw an Aoudad tag soon, that’s also on my list.
Gonna be hard to follow that trip!
Got home, on a Friday. Sunday afternoon I tell my girlfriend I’m going pig hunting, she says “you just got home” I said “yeah, but I got pigs on camera!”
This guy and his buddy came in just before dark and I got him.
I had a couple other close calls over the summer and one silly miss. Only killed 2 but had a ton of fun getting after them.

My good friend Kyle and I had a fallow deer hunt in Bulgaria planned for 2021, but Covid, we rescheduled for 2022, so here we go, off to Eastern Europe!
The fallow rut is an incredible sight to behold. It’s really hard to even imagine. The number of deer in the rut pits (leks) is crazy. They are roaring, grunting, fighting all hours of the day. Hard to even explain without being there.
The trip started awesome, but quickly went downhill for me. This is where things get real.
First afternoon I stalk to within 40 of a stud bedded out in the open. Another big stag came and stood him up and I proceeded to miss by a mile. After that I went on to miss twice more that evening and then again the next day! Yeah, 4 misses all under 40 yards. To say I was shook was probably an under statement. The Next day I decide 25 is my max, 2 stags fight up to me, I decide to shoot the one in the right, yup, you guessed it. Put one right in his shoulder blade. The guide ended up getting him with the rifle before he got away. Holey crap….
And my ride has arrived…
And my ride has arrived…
Finally on the last morning I was able to get my Sh-t together and got this decent stag. Not a giant, but happy to have him after my performance. Beautiful animals.

My good friend Gene had an Utah bighorn sheep tag and had invited me to come and caddy for him on the hunt. I’ll never hunt a bighorn, so I jumped right in.
Last week of October we meet in Salt Lake City and head out for his unit. He had a guy do a little pre scouting for him, so we had a good idea where sheep were hanging out. We pitch camp in the dark with high expectations for the morning.
Genes beautiful ram.

We get up in the dark and drive to our glassing spot. We find one and Gene goes and shoots it. Yes almost that easy. To be clear I did absolutely NOTHING of value on this hunt! But I still claim to be 100% first day kills guiding sheep.

Kyle was nice enough to invite me (and Ace) Cajunarcher, and Iceman down for a few days. We had lots of fun and even killed a few critters.

Of course Nov is for whitetails, but to be honest I really don’t get into it all that much. But I decided I would try to get one for ace to track and enjoy a few evenings in the wood. I finally connected on this nice buck and Ace had a ball tracking.

To be crystal clear I did NOT kill this deer.
The same evening Kyle called from KS and said he had hit a good buck just before dark. He was unsure of the hit, but thought it might be back a little, so he backed out.
Ace and I got up early and drove up to help him find it. It was tough tracking scenario for ace. He certainly did NOT find the deer, but he helped and loves being out.
I hunted a couple more times in OK, but didn’t take it too serious.

My buddy just down the road had a bunch of does he wanted to thin, so I sat one evening at his place. Does came and I decided to shoot this one.
I have no idea what happened but when I let the arrow go I was already saying “dead deer”. The arrow slammed her and she flopped and jumped and ran off with the arrow hanging out. It looked like it was right behind the shoulder! And if you look close in the trail cam pic it appears to be too. Strange things. Zero blood, we looked, Ace sniffed, nothing.

The only 2 cranes…
The only 2 cranes…
After 3 day in Stuttgart we headed back across OK and to the TX panhandle to try our hand at Sandhill cranes. Hoping to leave the duck jinx behind. Tons of cranes around, but we couldn’t catch a break. I was hunting with a bow, but the boys barely managed 2 with shotguns. They just weren’t working in our field the 2 mornings we hunted.
Awesome stuff Jim
Sandhills were a joke this year. Coming to feeders. Hundreds each morning We still managed to kill a few ????

The day after Christmas I headed to WY to chase a mountain Lion. I hunt with an outfitter there who I’ve become good friends with, but with the tag situation as it is I’m not sure when I’ll be able to hunt with him again. So with no tag this year we decided to do a Lion hunt and give me a reason to come visit him and his family. And hopefully kill a Lion!

Found plenty of tracks, and even saw one small female, but nothing we wanted to chase. Did find a lion killed ewe sheep. She had a collar. We called it in, but they said they already had a guy in the way to pick it up.
We should hook up next year RK, I really want to get a couple with a bow!

Shiras moose. He is about 80 yards. In the second pic you can see him just over the left side of my head.
Plenty of cool stuff, but couldn’t get on a Lion. I only had 5 days to hunt, and I would blame that, but Bruce kept hunting and didn’t cut a good big track for several day. So I guess I didn’t miss much.
After WY I took a quick day to run down the the Dallas Safari Club show. Meet up with some friends and see the sights.

Ended the first week with no shot.
Couple weeks working and then headed down to Sonora, MX for a couple weeks coues deer hunting.
Changed ranches for the second week. After seeing lots of deer the week before my finger got a little itchy. I shot this buck the first morning. A nice 6pt buck that easily makes P&y measuring over 86” gross.
The next morning I was able to stalk a group of javelinas and got a shot at this old girl.
The ranch didn’t have any more coues deer tags, and I wanted to keep hunting, so I guess that leaves mule deer! Nice heavy desert Mulie taken on the 4th day over water. 22 yards
The mule deer also finished out my deer slam. I think they should all may P&y except my Sitka Blacktail. Need to get some stuff measured..,
Then I finished off the year strong with a solid pope and young jackrabbit!
That wraps it up for the year. A beautiful Mexico sunset.
I’m gonna throw in a few random/misc pics here, no order or rhyme or reason.

Euros put a lot of $ back in the hunting fund vs taxidermy
Some People ask how I can afford to do so much. Some little corners can be cut, like taking the GF’s car to TX when I know I won’t be off road (40mpg vs 14mpg).
On the shark hunt there was 3 of us, instead of getting 2 hotel rooms (on the beach no less), I literally slept in the closet.
I don’t do any taxidermy, just euros. I always fly coach as cheap as possible.
None of that stuff is gonna pay for a sheep hunt, but it starts to add up over multiple trips.

Great recap Jim. Really enjoyed all the pics. Best of luck in all the adventures that will make up your ‘23 recap!
Congrats to my friend with the coolest hair on another exciting recap. And congrats on finishing your archery super 10 and deer slam!
I just wish you got a chance to enjoy some time away from work and do some hunting. Maybe next year…

Unreal. Thanks for taking the time to share it all here!
Many may not know but Jim is a damn fine archer when he’s not in Bulgaria . He met me last Spring down near St. Louis, MO for an archery clinic with Joel Turner.
Jim gave Joel a clinic on the fine art of command shooting. While Joel was critiquing Jim’s “too fast” trigger work, Jim is blowing off fletchings while wadding arrows together down range. lol
I am dizzy from the rolier (roller) coaster ride. Thanks! Well done. My best, Paul
Awesome year again Jim!! Congrats!
Really enjoyed this. Congratulations on a dream year “for most of us knuckle draggers” well done!
Very nice Billy!

What a year. It looks like you have mastered the art of prioritizing your time.
Thanks for taking some of that time to share your adventures.
What a fantastic year Jim!!! Good stuff all around, but that rabbit won’t make P&Y….
Awesome season Jim! Do you still have a girlfriend? ;-)
Very nice Jim! When I grow up I want to be just like you and Gene!
Spectacular year for sure! Congratulations on living the dream!
Wow, what a year!
Thank you so much for sharing your pics and recaps with us.
Threads like these are truly my favorite ones on Bowsite.
I can tell you love your buddy Ace as much as I love my dogs.
Thanks again Jim and may 2023 be just as blessed, safe and fun for you.
You had a banner hunting year well done.
I'm impressed. One helluva season my friend! Thanks for posting
Thanks for taking us on your ride sure looked like a lot of fun!!!
Jim, your "season" would be a great hunting career for most bowhunters. Thanks a bunch for sharing this with us so we can dream!
Jim- Thanks for sharing your year, again! I really enjoy this annual thread. Congrats on all the success and great adventures!
Lenny
Sorry to hear you struck out on grouse.
Congrats on a great year. Thanks for posting. Who doesn’t like seeing all those trophies and scenery

Good for you. Congrats.
All: Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think.
What a great recap thank you for sharing
Wow what a year. Great write up and photos.
Congrats Jim, outstanding year!
Very cool.....thanks for sharing. Ace crashed out upside down in his bed was the best pic though.
Jim, you make a guy grin with happiness for you and hate you at the same time for living what most of us can only dream about.
But like you say, you're just an ordinary guy making the extraordinary commitment to get it done. I think those famous "Just Do It' T-shirts must be inspired by you.
Big congrats again on finishing the Super 10 in grand style!
Good stuff Jim. Grats on another great year and your milestones.
Congratulations what a year….unreal! Great recap thanks for sharing!
The planning alone seems like a full time job heck of a year man!! For interests sake, what brand of broad heads and arrows do you shoot? Just wanna know for next time I buy stocks...
Jim you had an awesome and interesting year. You really got some nice trophies.
Thanks for sharing and taking us along with you.
Another incredible year Jim! Congrats on the hunts, the Super Ten, and living the dream!!!
Hell of a good year man!
I still feel sad that I didn't offer you and Gene my home for a shower, meal and good night's sleep after his Sheep Hunt out here.........Dang it.
Good luck, Robb
Enjoyed your report & pics...big congrats on all your success last year.

The only problem with this year’s thread is we didn’t manage to get any pics together. Let’s make sure we find a way to fix that this year. Congrats on an incredible year, my friend.
