How far of a drive is it for your to up there? I've spent some time out that way and would love to build a cabin near there as well, but it's about 8 hours for me. A bit too much, but dang that area is just about a beautiful as it gets.
Thanks for the replies guys. Here are few answers to the questions.
It takes me 4.5hrs to get there.
I bought 5 acres.
Yes, I’ll have solar. I’ve purchased the PV panel, wiring, lights, switches and usb ports. I have it set up here at home and I’ve been testing battery draw. When I go back up I’ll wire the cabin and then insulate, then start finishing the interior.
The structure is built on three treated 6x6s. (Similar to a storage shed) The soil condition is good with some small rock and good drainage. The overhangs are 16” on the sides and 12” on the ends. Should get plenty of moisture diversion away from the cabin.
I’ll definitely be going back up for turkey season in late April (if not before ) and do some hunting and working on the place.
Awesome stuff!! I was lucky enough as a kid to help with a house build in the VT woods that was 3.5 hours away. Similar to you, we would bring supplies up and work during the weekend. Had some downtime in between for some fun too. Took a while to complete, but learned a lot along the way (sometimes the hard way).
Great place bud. Look forward to seeing the progress. I have several friends in that area. I'd move there in a minute. Waiting on the old lady to retire.
Man, you made short of that to lock up! And 4.5 hours isn't even a long drive, breakfast at home, lunch at the cabin. Definitely a lot of fun days ahead on your own little slice of Wyoming!
Looks like a lot of years of enjoyment. I can just picture a few guys setting around a fire ring enjoying a couple drinks, pitching horseshoes. 2 thumbs up Brad.
Looks Great Brad! The Black Hills are a beautiful place! A good friend on mine has a house in Rapid City that borders the NF on that side. Lots and lots of wildlife as you know already. Good luck this fall!
I got busy with the inside. Insulated the walls and started putting up wall finishes. This is an old cedar fence that blew down and I salvaged some of the boards and hauled them up.
I did take a morning off from working and headed to some nearby public land to do some Turkey hunting. I went to a place I found last year and as luck would have it, I was successful.
I was just about done with what I wanted / needed to do on the cabin. My daughter, SiL and granddaughter are coming up over memorial weekend so I wanted the cabin to be ready for visitors.
There’s still more to do (as always) but it’s coming along nicely
I was hunting coues in Mexico when this was originally posted, glad it came back to the top. Very cool cabin cnelk!! Reminds me a lot of Bob's Buck Shack but the access is a little easier! Hope you get to enjoy it for many years to come!
Pretty neat Brad. Fun to have a special place like that to go hangout. I gotta get up to my shack on the Littlefork this week now that the snow is gone. 5 1/2 mile atv ride right now which is perfect. Keeps it quiet. Was going to trap a few beaver in there again but couple things came up and season closes next Monday. Still go up and hang out for a day.
There must be a jug in there somewhere for a relaxing evening cocktail on the deck, but it didn't show up in the video. One of the best parts of an evening after a day at the shack.
Chris, might be too late to insulate the floor since there is no crawl space. Needs to be done prior to placing down the flooring on the joists. If there was a crawl space, a spray on foam or insulation board might have been used and as a deterrent for rodents who love to line their nest with fresh turkey feathers and fibers from camo clothing. :) Paul
Ah I forgot about the first video. Paul a buddy of mine (yes my only friend:) got 1" foam board and laid it down inside on the floor then covered again with ply. He said it works relatively well. I've been debating it myself.
Just an idea, not sure if you ever use Facebook marketplace? There’s always someone selling leftover flooring, even hardwood scraps on the cheap. People buy way too much or just waste a bunch. Looking forward to your next update!
Here’s the latest update, and probably the last since the cabin is now complete.
Some of you have seen my latest update already but I’m sure some others haven’t.
The cabin exterior is all stained, front deck is sealed with Penofin, interior and exterior trim installed, interior painted, floor painted and the curved log with my granddaughters name on it is up.
Definitely been a fun project and now it’s time to start enjoying it.
That is AWESOME Brad. I would like to find 5 acres or so up in WY to set up as a basecamp for our 5th wheel and put up a secure shop building to store it....eventually retire and live out of that location when not travelling in the 5th wheel. Oh...dreams.....
