I’m going to build a pedestal for my elk mount. It is going to be 2’Wx3’Lx2’H. I planned on making a 2x4 frame but want to trim it out with something nice. My preference is barn wood but I would also consider something else. Anyone have any ideas? I thought about using poplar but staining it with some distressed grey stain to provide a similar finish to barn wood. I’m open to anything and would love to see pictures of what others have done?

My buddy called this bull out of a little timber pocket in NE Oregon to me. I was on a super steep rocky open ridge top.
He’s a taxidermist, so I told him to make a base for the pedestal like the ridge top I shot it on.
I personally don’t care for the the cabinet, or barn wood bases.
I think natural looking habit looks way better.

This one is a moose but similar to what you are looking for and posted on here a while ago. One pic at top and more towards the bottom of thread. With the exception of writing on base I really like this mount.

You may want to consider looking at some old pallets actually. Some of the lumber used in wooden pallets can actually end up making some pretty nice "rustic" furniture and so on if you have the patience to reclaim it.

Hey Bowfreak, here’s an Oregon bull my buddy killed in the cascades. He did a wood base like you were describing, then added some water, moss, and ferns for habitat that was similar to the area he killed it.
