Well the Colorado dark goose season ends this Sunday so I plan on hunting Saturday, at the normal Yard Hopper goose field. Not much happening, as the geese are not interested in the area and the few that are around are feeding other places but I have had a few fly just over the blind and within shotgun range. No I am not going to use the shotgun but I have another idea for those close flying geese.

Teal is now 8 months old and his training is coming along at a very nice pace. His weight is now 60 pounds and he is starting to fill out and become an adult dog, well sort of.

I do believe he can handle a goose now but I have to get one on the ground to find out.

The idea!, I build a FLUflu arrow and will try to shoot one out of the sky at short range. Hey, might work.

I looked in at the local archery shop but no Flu arrow. OK, just go home a build one. I used an old aluminum arrow. drilled two small holes near the tip and glued and inserted a wire loop, and added a sharp BH. Only had two large feathers to use on the tail end. I might have to use the recurve bow to launch this arrow because of the extra large feathers. Have not shot it to try it out but will just have to wait for a close flying goose flock.

Yea, both neighbors are gone for the winter.

Paul, that's a fun idea and a beautiful dog. I'm assuming you won't have Teal retrieve that goose with a broadhead in it.

Greg, You assume well; never have done that even with Chase the Wonder Dog and 100 geese killed and retrieved. Good question.

JR, I am hoping for a right over head shot at a flock in single file :) Aim at the first one, hit the last one.

Dead goose on the way. Keeping my fingers crossed.

“never have done that even with Chase the Wonder Dog and 100 geese killed and retrieved.”

So are you getting pass-throughs, or does the arrow fall out? I took a shot at a goose just one time down on the Platte north of Denver near THAT fort. It never occurred to me that the bird could have taken a frontal hit and flown away, so I didn’t think to watch the flock as they departed and I never did figure out where that arrow ended up….,

Paul has asked for our help. He got a shot this morning but missing the arrow landed in neighbors roof. He needing us to raise some bail money so he can get out of jail. His bail is $10k. Good news is Teal was able to out run the sheriff deputies and escaped. ;)

Paul, exactly where would be the best place to hit a flying big bird with your new custom arrow? I think that it might work well on a ground shot also. Badbull

Great challenge good luck . Hope ya get one for the pup ! Post story and photo if you do .

I tried many years ago without my dog , on geese , came close but didn't connect . I was "pass shooting" on low flying birds . I think decoying would give better opportunity. Fun either way

Good luck

"Teal" - That's pretty cool Paul, had a yellow Lab years ago I named Teal... Yours and mine are the only dogs have ever heard that named... You have a good looking pup there...

Unique looking arrow, am sure it'd work if you'd hit one but would keep Teal at heel if you did... Too sharp of broadhead but they make plastic broadheads that'd probably be safe for a dog...

From: Paul@thefort

Gary, I have never sent the dog to retrieve a goose with an arrow in it. I have used mechanical BH. If the arrow is in the goose, I keep the dog in/at the blind, go out and pull the arrow, and then replant the goose for a "blind" retrieve. With 100 geese shot over the past 12 years, have had no issue with dog and BH. Paul

Cool stuff Paul, thanks for sharing... Have you ever tried those plastic broadheads? I thought about trying them on a pheasant reserve but never got around to it...

No plastic BH. and have not hunted pheasants with the bow. I have hard enough time killing them with a load of 6 shot.

He’s looking more like a dog than a pup now. Great picture
