I decided to thaw out a Yearling Cow elk tongue and give it a go BBQ'ing it to eat.
I marinaded it overnight along with some sliced Idaho tater.
I've never had tongue of any species before,
Robb
Tongue is delicious, but I've only had it slow cooked in liquid. You peel the skin off after it is good and tender. I've had moose and deer it's like roast beef. If you take it out soo soon or cook it fast its tough. Anxious to hear out it turns out on thr BBQ
It was definitely a learning curve.
Plenty of roughage to cook along with it.
Jalapeño Cornbread prepping in the oven.
I like to use the Gotham Copper pans for slower cooking
And this Electric Griddle for frying
Off to the BBQ after I snow shoveled the 4 inches of fresh snow from the morning storm
Slow BBQ as it's my first time with Tongue and cutting/adding veggies inside.
It did shrink up a little but just about perfect when I cut it in half, taters are looking finished up too.
I cut it up along with the taters and ate some, pretty tasty and not chewy at all.
I added it all together into a Bachelor Gourmet mix.
1/2 a cup of coffee this early AM and I had to go to the Sit Down Office as the roughage did its duty way fast! haha
Good luck, Robb
Yum! I've never had elk tongue but I really like deer, bison, pig, and beef tongue.
Yea sir, tongue has always been considered a delicacy. I cook beef tongue all the time but not elk since I only shoot one about every 5 years or so when I draw a tag. I will save it next time.
I’ve cooked a few elk tongues. I like to boil it, peel it, cube it up into 1/4” pieces, season heavily with high quality taco seasoning, and fry it until crisp. It makes awesome street tacos!
I tried it once and was not a fan, very gamey. Im sure i could have done something different and it would have been fine. I do like beef tongue though.
You should have seen the look my huntin buddy gave me when I cut the tongue out of my moose….too funny.
i still have some heart in the freezer. Heck, I love that stuff…..its maybe because I grew up poor eating those cheap cuts of meat…but I like it. Robb, That skillet pic made me hungry….
Thanks for the kind words.
I agree cutting it out of the mouth was kinda eerie!!! Thank goodness I was hunting solo.
Good luck, Robb
You know it’s done when it doesn’t lick you back!
I have only eaten pickled tongue, but it was excellent.
Have never tried tongue but I’d definitely give it a shot.
Mexican restaurants around here have Lengua-tongue
And you can buy beef tongue in the Mexican, grocery stores…..
Bullelk1 I always bring them out through the lower jaw. Cut loose the hyoid bone and trim it off later. Easier and the best meat is the base.
i had beef tongue in Ireland and it was great. I will give a try on elk
My wife is Chinese and throws a fit if I forget to get the tongue at the meat processor. She typically just uses it for stir fry. It’s the first thing she cooks from any elk or deer I bring home.
I love beef and Buffalo tongue
Thanks for the input and idea's.
Good luck, Robb
