I’ll be flying through Amsterdam, with KLM in October. I’ve heard some weird rules about having broadheads, even in a bow case or checked bags. Can anybody give me the real goods on their rules?

Last I heard it was a big NO NO. I personally would not. Find another flight if possible, or maybe ship them ahead of time?

Mechanicals should be ok. Sorry couldn’t resist.

Maybe you could ship a dozen in advance? Hope you have a great trip.

Everything is booked already. My son-in-law sent me the itinerary today and I saw it was Amsterdam.

Charlie, there will be mechanicals! My PH in 2010 was the biggest Rage fan I've ever seen and that's when they really were a POS. He did a lot of cull hunting for farmers and loved the Rages. He was very impressed with my Slick Tricks and NAP Spitfires.

A speaker at P&Y touched on that. He disassembles his heads and puts the blades in his shaving kit. Never had a problem.

I’ve had two different outfitters in two different countries tell me not to fly through Amsterdam with broadheads. if flights are already booked and can’t be changed, I’d recommend shipping your broadheads ahead of time.

Like ILbowhntr, I heard the same thing while at the P&Y Convention in Reno. But, if you can’t change flights, I would probably ship a few extra heads like Randy mentioned.

This seems like a weird situation in Amsterdam as this was the most liberal country that I ever visited. However, it was 1962 when I was in the service. I happened to be in a tavern one night when the locals warned me about a guy in there that was brandishing a knife about the size of a Bowie Knife. They told me that the guy hated GI's and I braced myself for trouble as he came straight towards me waving the knife in my face. I breathed a sigh of relief when he asked me if I wanted to buy it. Nothing to do with broadheads but something that I have not forgotten.

Shipping anything from the USA to Africa takes weeks to months, and when it does arrive, the receiving party is assessed a duty on the item(s) nearly as much as the original cost..

My recommendation would be to have your outfitter purchase some broadheads for you at one of the bow/sporting goods shops in Jo'burg or wherever and have them for you upon arrival.. Let them tell you what shops are convenient and you can probably go online and select a broadhead they have in stock over there that is also available here to tune and practice with. A second option would be for either you or the outfitter to purchase them online from a vendor that ships to South Africa, and have them sent to the outfitter's address.

Thanks Ffh. That's probably the best bet. We're waiting to hear back from the outfitter now, but I'll check on archery shops in Jo'burg.

Ideally someone from bowsite that's going before October could transport heads for us and we pay them.

just do what they do in prison when they want to hide something from the guards, just be really careful.

^^ if there were ever a rock solid argument against large cut mechanicals - this is it.
