Trying to get youths involved in hunting takes a turn for the worse as local contest for culling feral cats gets cancelled in New Zealand. Darn it.
Looked to be a great event , especially at check in as they scan each cat for any ID chips, as no cat with a ID chip would be counted towards the participates entries. I don't see why not since a house cat is in a house and a cat outside the house is feral cat.
Maybe next year
Hold on there buddy ! A house cat ain’t necessarily in the house. I have one that doesn’t stay in the house but comes and goes as he pleases from our closed-in back porch. He gos out at night and probably murders a few varmints, but I would take it unkindly if someone were to deliberately harm him. His cajones are now separated from him so he doesn’t roam far. ;-)
Not in favor of any wild game killing contests for prizes or money be it, coyotes, prairie dogs, crows, feral cats, or even deer contests, ie, horn porn.
X 2 on Paul@thefort comments. If anyone were to harm my cats as they are indoor/outdoor cats there would be trouble in river city.
Hey Paul, I’d like to know your reasoning for it?
Just asking is all
Yep, you want your cat, you keep it inside.. or confined to your property.. My two too..
A cat someone let's roam is fair game just like the songbirbsand rabbits are for it. Anyone who threaten someone over that is out of line.
Hey Paul - how do you feel about fishing contests?
If some of y’all think killing a family pet is the same as killing a rabbit or songbird, you must have a sad sad heart!
Sad heart? No. If the family pet is loved so much, keep it inside. Cuz frankly, I'm tried of what I mentioned above.
Yep, pee on tires is definitely a reason to take some kid’s beloved pet away from them!
Hunting or fishing shouldn't be promoted as a competition. Just leads to cheating and unethical behavior, and isn't a good representation of why most of us enjoy those activities. "Whack um and stack um" just doesn't do anything for the image of hunters or fishermen.
Was that directed at me snuffer?
I’m with Drycreek. I feed 2 feral cats every day. Last fall I trapped them and crazy cat lady friend of mine split the cost with me and I had them spayed, given their shots, and microchipped. They are no different than house pets to me. I just didn’t want 2 turning into 20. If a kid shot one I might shoot him in the ass with a BB gun and hang him from the meat pole until his parents came to get him off the property.
The older I get the more of an animal lover I am becoming. Interestingly it’s the opposite with humans. Lol We could have a people culling contest in some neighborhoods I know!
Bowbender I totally agree. I am amazed people think it is ok to let their cats roam. Even more amazed at the responses they claim they would do to a kid for taking one out.......unreal.
I’m 100% with you as well, Bowbender. Most, if not all, leash laws apply to cats as well as dogs. Something a hell of a lot of people apparently are unaware of, or choose to ignore.
We all live in different worlds and.environments. Hunting predator contests was something I was raised on. This was before social media and Facebook and computers and cell phones. In the UP it was a winter social along with pot luck dinners, and maybe the prize was a new shotgun or a couple of hams. Those days are done. They were fun We were raised.to respect Wildlife. Animals were killed for food and when necessary control I shot quite a few true feral cats at times. I trapped alot of animals. I never lived in a suburb or town area. Animals were never targets for fun. Some populations needed.control Some would never understand. I remember signs on state public land to destroy feral cats. Can you imagine that today With that said I don't like or would.endorse this hunt with children.as posted.
Cats shouldn't be allowed to roam nor should roaming cats be shot. I live-trap any cats that show up on my place and haul em in to the county pound.
The problem with any hunting contests is that hunting should not be a competitive sport and the point should not be to see how many of something one can kill.
I call them ditch cougars. Free roaming cats literally kill BILLIONS of native wildlife every year in the US alone.
"Yep, pee on tires is definitely a reason to take some kid’s beloved pet away from them!"
Well....not so much the tires, but it IS hell on the clear anodize on the wheels. Scratches on the hood, pulls in the soft top. Ring cameras picking up the cats hopping up all over the two Jeeps. It's also great when the grandkids come down, wanna help Nanna in the landscaping and put their hands in cat sh!t. Or having to pull deck boards up to remove a four or five decaying rabbits that were drug under. Smelled great on a hot August evening.
See, if you want a "beloved" cat, keep it inside. Just like I do with my two. Or, join the entitled crowd and share your fur baby with the world.
Hey Paul, I’d like to know your reasoning for it? Just asking is all.
Paul writes: I believe that anything that doesn't honor the animals grates on me and seems inherently wrong. These contests create very poor PR for hunters. I don't think any form of hunting should be competitive for prizes or cash. I believe that we need to encourage a more sensitive relationship with the animals we hunt. "Wack them and stack them" does not do that per these contests. If one want to shoot coyotes, crows, prairie dogs, just do it but be discreet about it. No need to get "likes" or paid for the privilege. My best, Paul
I love not letting the felines roam. That way I can concentrate on killing The roaming dogs. Damn I've mailed so many collars back to the owners. Dog owners please keep your dogs locked up
And for all Of that Paul, I absolutely agree with.
Ask houndsman how they train their hounds…
@Paul@thefort - song dog contests are the most effective way to keep the population in check. Just wait and see what happens to NM's deer population going forward because clueless legislators and elected misreprestatives share your opinion on the matter...
Mail a collar of the wrong dog to the wrong house and you better hope you don’t have a return address on it. This thread is among the saddest I’ve ever read on here. The financial and emotional investment people put into pets and you folks think they should get shot as soon as they cross a property line. In my part of the world most everybody’s pets are outside pets and there’s been many a man shot over a dead dog. Read “The Voice of Bugle Ann” if you’re interested in what’ll happen over a shot hunting dog in southwest Missouri. I know the family well of the PROTAGONIST in that book that shot the dog-killer. Some of y’all need a serious heart check. No property is worth the life of a loved pet, and no loved pet should be forced to live inside 24/7, I don’t care how many piles of cat crap Nanna accidentally steps in. Sad sad sad.
Zero respect for animals in this thread. Some of y’all are the same ones who agree with wanton waste laws, yet are perfectly fine with blatant disrespect for animals and neighbors with not only useless killing of pets, but useless killing that strips a young kid of their best friend. Not sure how anyone could agree with that, let alone post about happily doing in on a public thread that your name is attached to. There’s nothing heroic about killing someone’s pet, regardless of how you try to spin it. Not sure why you guys think it’s something to brag about but that’s a very sad life to live and an even sadder life to promote.
Boggs, I may be missing your point but I doubt anyone is out “hunting” family pets. I had a hunting dog “lab” come onto my property and killed my daughters cat right in front of her. Ripped the guts right out. Curious as to what you would have done in that situation?
I assume situations similar to this are what most are taking about here, but please correct me if I am wrong.
I don’t buy the bullshit bravado story line of mailing countless collars back. Don’t get too rough there mister. Easy sheriff! We don’t want any problems.
????
I have chickens. My neighbors have a cat that comes through and does some mousing around the coop because when you have chickens, you have mice (because of all the feed).
The cat doesn’t bother the chickens but if it does…. Well, those 9 lives will be gone.
New Zealand has a over population of wild cats. No where near any homes.
When there is a serious overpopulation of a critter, thinning them out is also in the best interest of the critter. If it's not a sport hunted species, then the gov't offering a bounty in an effort to motivate hunters is not unreasonable. In this case those cats need to be thinned out...it sucks for sure, but it needs to be done.
I gots an idea... Right now the state of Florida is overrun with pythons, and they are offering a bounty on them. How about instead of killing 'em we pack up a couple thousand and ship 'em down to New Zealand. That'll solve their cat problem..;)
I think what’s really sad, just a sad life, are those that think they are entitled to let their animals roam, specifically cats, throughout their neighbors yards. Your right to let your animal roam ends at your property line. If it truly is a “beloved” animal.
Edit - Right now my wife and I are sitting on the deck. Numerous song birds from gold finches to bluebirds are back at the feeders. Several rabbits are chewing away on the pink teacups. Wifey complains but the rabbits are off limits. Over by the garden are several piles of feathers. The nest of baby rabbits that my wife put a Ring camera next to, so as to watch the mother feed her kits, destroyed. It’s real simple, keep YOUR cat in YOUR house. Just like a responsible owner.
"If it's not a sport hunted species, then the gov't offering a bounty in an effort to motivate hunters is not unreasonable."
And that's completely different from a staged competitive event.
As for peeing; park your vehicle in a garage where it belongs. Should I shoot any male hunting dog that pisses on my truck tires when parked for bird hunting? Heck, I've seen them try to pee on someone's leg. Maybe we should eliminate male dogs, too. ;-)
But I get it. ANY pet should not be roaming on neighboring properties, or harassing wildlife. If you don't have enough acreage to let them roam without being a nuisance to others, then manage them. That shouldn't mean they/you should kill them on sight.
Let’s see, there’s already a Jeep and a Tacoma in the garage. And another outside. So I should build another garage because cat owners refuse to control their pets?
These cats are to New Zealand as our pigs are to us.
Anyway, I'm not to big of a fan of these "kinda" contests myself. I'm more of a don't do or say anything about them, kinda guy.
You guys would love my cat. Goes outside. Doesn't leave our property. Comes back in to use litter box. Kills chipmunks but doesn't go after the birds. We put a collar on him that has a bell on it. Hard for him to sneak up on stuff. As far as I can tell, doesn't piss on my tires.
"Free roaming cats literally kill BILLIONS of native wildlife every year in the US alone."
How many billions a year. That's a lot! Heck if it was only 10 billion for 10 years that would be 100 Billion (100,000,000,000) things. Its probably good we don't have 100 billion more animals and birds in the environment.
“How many billions a year. That's a lot!”
Depending on which source you care to look at, free roaming cats kill between 1.3 - 4 billion birds per year. So yeah, it is alot.
Regardless of numbers, the point is cats should be controlled same as any other pet.
Bowbender, Any vehicle you're willing to leave outside in the weather, and to let birds shit on, probably won't be damaged by a little cat pee. He might even be helpful in keeping mice out of it. ;-)
But if you read my entire post, I agree with you. Pet owners should be responsible for managing them. But that's not the cat's fault. Most civilized areas have laws to deal with that.
I know when we were kids it seemed like we killed a million songbirds with our BB guns but it probably was only a few hundred thousand
Banning contests is just another step towards banning hunting. The anti's will use any means they can to separate and divide, then conquer. KS has been up against it. https://www.kansas.com/sports/outdoors/article109921747.html
Texas has some pretty big contests that pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars. https://www.wtbbc.org/contest-info/
Big tradition, lots of fun, and a useful tool in management. Contests and bounties have been around for a very long time and hopefully don't become the next domino closer to no hunting.
Let’s see, there’s already a Jeep and a Tacoma in the garage. And another outside. So I should build another garage because cat owners refuse to control their pets?
You could use it for a lawnmower too and other stuff. Second garage always a good option
Chipped ones should be worth double points.
Bou- maybe if he had a big lion mount he could put that in it too.....then never speak of it regardless of how many times asked....
Yup not our problem different view they are over run with invasive species. Look and research what happened in Hawaii let alone Florida.

How does that happen, double post so far apart???

I shot an old, mangled farm cat once. He was missing a leg from some sort of farm accident and the other cats had beat him up bad. My buddy handed me his grandma's. 22 Beretta because he can't hit anything to save his life. He failed to tell me it was a .22 short loaded with solids. First shot zipped through his neck. For the next 30 seconds, it was absolute chaos. The cat richocheted from one end of the barn to the other, yowling, hissing, and knocking junk over whilst making noises I hope to never hear again unless I get another chance at a mountain lion. There were some other guys I knew that would roadhunt farm cats because one of our bowsite outdoor writers happened to write an article once on cats killing quail and songbirds. That never did sit well with me.
As for Robert Kiebler, ..... I have never heard of a lower human than you are. For you to shoot a pet, then go to the effort to find the owner's address and mail the collar back out of spite, puts you in the category of pretty much every serial killer ever caught. Not to mention, what you're doing is a non-expungable felony in most states. In the rare case my dogs get out, every neighbor I have puts them back in the yard and sends me a text.
Bowbender - 68 convert, has the Hurst 455 in it. A feral cat (nearest neighbor is a mile away) set up shop in it for a couple of nights before I figured out what was going on. The damage to the top and interior was significant!

I didn't kill the cat that tore up my car, that problem actually took care of itself naturally. I am curious though... how is killing a feral cat different than a coyote, wolf, or gar? On this site especially yotes are targeted with almost a hatred, even bragged about. What's the difference between the two species?
Coyote won't cozy up on your lap when you're sipping your tea while you're reading your newest romance novel that's why ;)
Lol, neither will a feral cat!
I've killed several feral cats, but I would never knowingly shoot someone's pet.
I live in a rural community where far too many tomcats don't get de-nutted, and in order to protect my own cats I've had to put down two mean, nasty, feral tomcats in the past 20 years. By nasty, I mean they were all muscle and scars. Hated to do it, and made every possible effort to run them off a number of times before they got the death sentence. My cat was a scrapper and would protect his turf, but he was no match for those big toms who killed for a living.
Back in the 80's I was contracted by a wildlife park to terminate feral cats that were killing off rare birds. Felt bad for the cats because they were just trying to stay alive, but, like in New Zealand the issue had to be dealt with.
There are times in life when the last thing we want to do.....is exactly what we must do if we are going to act responsibly.
As for competition hunts, I belonged to the CSVCA in Calif. for a number of years, and participated in dozens of competitive hunts...not for money, but highly competitive all the same. Club hunts (2-3 man teams) took place monthly from July through March. During those years I wasted an awful lot of critters whose pelts were worthless..it was killing for points. While I did enjoy the camaraderie, I feel bad for disrespecting and wasting so much wildlife, and certainly wouldn't do it again.
Cats over there are wiping out small game and birds, also whats different about letting a cat run VS letting a dog run, nothing if they run loose in the wild the owners must not care much about what eats them or runs over them.
This is starting to sound like the altos and sopranos warming up for choir practice… “Me me me, me me me, meeeee!”
Cats are a nasty, destructive, invasive species, just like pythons, pigs, carp, snakeheads, kudzu, milfoil…
They DO NOT BELONG outside, being allowed to prey on native wildlife. Frankly, I’m pretty sure that if they weighed #40-#60 and ate fawns instead of dickie-birds, there’d be no debate here.… just a hunch.
Personally, I put people who let their cats roam loose and people who don’t care if they pick off someone’s pet on about the same level, at least as far as their Responsibility rating goes. Yeah, we had outside cats when I was a kid, before their impact was well understood; one of them even managed to die of old age, but the others got picked off by cars and a pack of “free range” pet dogs that roamed the neighborhood freely… right up until the HOA finally raised hell about it; that was after they had started threatening smaller kids. They had stopped cruising too close to our house right about the time my older brother taught my younger brother and me how to throw like an MLB outfielder….
I would like to see all of the ferals GONE, and the pets all kept indoors as they should be. I’m just not willing to risk shooting some kid’s pet in order to reduce their numbers.
It sure would be nice to see the songbird population and the native small predators rebound, though….
And in re: the OP - a contest to see who can kill the most of something is NOT a way to cultivate thoughtful, responsible sportsmen. Or a Conservation Ethic.
Better approach (IMO) is to publicize the problem widely… and apply the solution very, VERY quietly, well out of the public eye.
I just laugh at those who want to save feral cats. Neuter and release. They must live in some subdivision.
I have killer cats. They keep my buildings and barn clearer of rodents.
If they venture off into the woods and get killed, that's the way it goes.
Too many people here watched too much Disney...
For all of you that got all gooshy about cats, you should probably look into the numbers of cats and the issues they are having with them in New Zealand and Australia before you lose your S#$%.
It’s not about “gooshy”; it’s about keeping real hunting respectable. Nuance.
