I drew an area 38 type 1 elk tag for this year, I was wondering if anyone on here has hunted it and would be willing to share some info? Thanks

Probably not a ton of help here as we’re all bowhunter and that type one is rifle but I do know that In that area, rifle season is weather dependent. If it’s nice, hunt high. Good amount of snow, lower.

huntnmuleys, a type 1 is also an archery tag if you buy the archery stamp and most seasons run the entire month of September. Having held several type-1 tags in my life and never having used a rifle, I view them as an archery tag that some guys choose to use a gun on :)

I used to be an avid bow hunter but not anymore. I plan to hunt the whole rifle season, any info I can get on the area I really appreciate

Can’t buy a stamp to archery hunt for that unit. Must draw the type 9 tag.

Great hunt but can’t help you as the high country I hunted will likely be buried in snow by rifle season. We even lost the last 5 days of September for our hunt a few years ago.

Brotsky that tag has no archery season open, it is rifle only.

Good area get back from roads and hunt it hard as early as you can.

Brotsky that’s not the case in 38. That’s strictly a rifle tag

My bad guys, should have looked before I commented! Thanks for setting me straight!

^^^ all good sir. That's one of the areas folks complained about going to Type 9 for archery so it stuck in my mind. Some folks don't bother to check though and may be disappointed when they draw.

Brotsky, don't know if you know or not but that's a rifle only tag. ;-)

I archery hunted 38 5 years ago. Love the area and it is a great archery hunt. The rifle hunt can be good as long as they do not get to much snow. If they do, hunt the drainages leading to the east in both the north and south sections of the unit. Good luck I love the Bighorns

I managed to kill an average 5x6 on my 4th day of the hunt.
