Pine Acres Camp.. Spring & Fall 23'
Bears

Sun is setting on the last day of Spring 2023.... Fall Bear hunt begins in 58 days!!
2023 was an interesting and challenging year. Went from Winter straight into 85 to 95 F temperatures with little to no rain. High temps stayed for 3 weeks. Along with a forest fire cutting off one of our Bear Management Areas that had baits active and ready to hunt. Bears were hitting baits but many were morning Bears.
Another interesting thing was the number of Bears that had tags in their ears. This Bear traveled over 85 KM's from where he was released, to get to our bait site. Was tagged in September 2021. Up till this year, we had never taken a tagged bear before.

Bears were active on baits during morning hours, before the Mid 90'sF kicked in later in the day. Check out the time stamp on Pic. Was testing the hunters being on stand dripping sweat on afternoon sits.
This Bear was hitting just before noon...

Do you guys ever get a normal year, Chris?? ;-)
Had record flooding last year, went straight from winter to mid summer, this year. Looks like you guys still got it done, though!

Troy... it was a challenge with all that went on. 95F, Forest workers shutting down 2 BMAs right when we were ready to use the baits within them. Had to move hunters same day we set them up. Had to reuse an area for a second week, but it still worked. I will never skip using popcorn again. Popcorn works in high temps. We start popping corn for the fall next week. A few hunters had to gut and retrieve on their own because of the heat. Hunters were helping each other, thats what semi guided is all about.
Sams Bear...
Sams Bear...
There is a story to this bear. Another hunter sat on this bait the day before Sam took this bear. Other hunter, Sams buddy, saw 2 sets of Sow and cubs, one with this years cubs, other with last years. Also saw 2 bears ranging in the 200 pound range. I moved the other hunter to another site at his request, Sam sat the stand that was just vacated by hunter. The sow with last years came in with a big boar behind her. She apparently was in heat. Sam took, what we are sure is going to be a P and Y bear early in the afternoon.
Tracked the bear, scaring a couple of bears off the bait as they were going in to track. 3 guys could not get it out. Sam stayed with the bear till 3 in the morning till we went back to camp for recruits. Hunters got bear out as sun was coming up.

Week of May 21 we had 2 guys nestled in their stand. They were seeing Bears but were not able to close the deal. On Tuesday, about 6:00 pm they heard what sounded like voices coming towards the Bait. Then all of a sudden there was a lady walking about 20 yards from the bait going towards the road. Hunter filmed what he thought was a true case of hunter harrassement. She proceeded to the road. Met a couple of others and walked East talking the whole way. As she walked by bait she was yelling Hayo over and over again. Hunter phoned me and we drove to see who it was.
Turned out it was Geologist's geoligizing for Lithium. She was yelling as she was afraid of bears.
Phoned the CO and he arrived and looked at video. Turns out the group had no idea we were there till they arrived at the bait from the thick of it. CO's went and talked to the group and all was fine then after. I also had a meeting withe the head geologist and went over maps so it would not happen again. They found nothing hopefull in way of Lithium.
Hunters stayed on bait for 2 more days. Saw bears but I moved them the last day.
We also, in April asked all hunters to bring their own sleeping bags since after Lotties Heart issues, beds were the hardest about cleaning cabins. So yes lots of challenges that our hunters, Saxon, Trenton, Lottie and I had to deal with.

Was out checking a Bear Area for this Falls hunts. Found this camera on a bait not used since 2022 Spring. Bears were coming into the bait site with no bait since a year ago.
Vast new road system all within an area we were only able to access by ATVs.
Vast new road system all within an area we were only able to access by ATVs.
Back in 1974 this area was just freshly logged over. Roads were in great shape. Was a great area actually to hound hunt the Bears. So many roads to cut of the bears as the hounds chased them across the roads. I seen this area when there was no trees back then. Watched the area grow back in the 50 years of Bear hunting. I will be able to see the trees cut and watch the new growth come bac. I'm still young enough to enjoy another 20 years of fine Bear hunting here.
This area was always a great area for Fall Bear hunting. All gravel and sand. Blueberries brought Bears from a hundred kms away to fill their stomachs. Spent the last 2 days checking potential sites and current baits for Fall 2023. Farthest Bait site was just measured at 51 KMs or 31 Miles from camp.

Hope you have a great fall hunt! I have been trying to get information regarding the use of a leashed tracking dog for recovery. Finally was able to learn the regulations, and that you can only track during legal hunting hours. Have a number of people telling me that this is true for any tracking...it has to be during legal hunting hours which makes no sense at all. (This is an Ontario blood tracking dog group) Unless it's known to be a marginal hit we have always tracked and recovered that night. Can you confirm one way or the other? Thanks!
Each Dog used for hunting have to be individually licensed to be able to be used for hunting in Ontario. Deer or Bear. We do not have night hunting for any species such as coon. Having a licensed hunting dog on a Bear or Deer, live or eventually found dead, would be considered hunting. With or without guns. What if you came up to the wounded animal in the dark of night. Might be the fact that they are worried a hunter with hounds might be out trying to tree bears at night in order to shoot the bear at sun up..
We track our Bears at night for many reason. Like keeping predatory animals from feeding on the Bear and deer or because of the heat might render meat no good. But when tracking at night, even with hounds no weapons allowed. I will ask a CO what the answer is and let you know his answer to my question.
Thanks! This is tracking with a leashed recovery dog. No weapons. I get that they say you can't do this at night for the reasons you stated. It is being told that it is not legal to track at night even without a dog that I am not believing. That is what the blood tracking group is stating.
Anyone can say what they believe. Truth is you can track at night 'without' a bow or rifle or hound on a leash. If you cannot find a bear at night dead without dogs, a dog would just push the bear. Also, if bear is slightly wounded your technically hunting. They can twist the wording all they want but in the end its the Conservation Officer who decides at the moment.
Anyone bringing a boat into Canada must have all waters drained from live wells and in bottom of the boat. Boat has to be cleaned and free of any wet or dried aquatic plants. Also boat and trailers must be Zebra and Quagga mussel free, dead or alive.
They have been turning fishing boats away at the border after inspections where mud etc was found. Save yourselves a hassle at the border and clean your boat before arriving at the border.

Kef and his bear....
Kef and his bear....
Kef phoned Saxon and I while we were at Tim Hortons. Said hit a Bear. We jumped in the truck and were on our way in minutes. Little did we know the the issues we were about to encounter with Kef and his Bear. Involved Police, Ambulance an Axe and Game Wardens.
Great pics Chris. My wife and I hunted a week near Upsala. We both killed bears. She left for home and I traveled to Manitoba. I went through Vermillion Bay. I thought of you as I passed. You do such a good job for bear hunters. Lots of us that chase bears thank you for your efforts. I whitetail hunted with you many years ago. Ryan Thomson brought me along twice. Had a great time both times.

C’mon Chris! You can’t leave us hangin!
Looks like a great start to the fall season for you, as well.
Here's the story... there are 2 parts of this story.
We had just finished showing a group of hunters their baits. Bee lined it to Tim Hortons for supper. Got a call from Kef saying he shot at a Bear. Said will be right there. When we got to the trail head. Kef was waiting for us. Was dark by then. Gun unloaded and in a case as law requires when dark. Saxon and I start walking the trail to the bait which was a 300 yard trek down hill. We carried the Army gurney with us to get the Bear back to the truck.
We waited at the bait but no Kef... he was right behind us to start. Waiting a few more minute and here he came. Asked him what was taking him and he told us as he threw his leg over a downed tree, his leg was thrust into the tree and a branch size of my thumb tore a gash into the meaty part of his leg. His pant leg and boot was filled with blood. Then he said he's on blood thinners.
As soon as he said blood thinners I sat him down. Told him to calm down and raised his legs higher than his torso to slow pressure to his leg. I took off his Hunter Orange vest. Pulled up his pant leg and blood was gushing out. There was a fair sized gash. We took the hunter orange vest, wrapped around leg above wound and stuck sturdy stick in and twisted for a tourniquet. We twisted hard enough to slow the bleeding down. Then as we got pressure the way we needed it, Saxon ran to the truck and got what cloth clothing he had in his truck and put a packing on the wound, along with tourniquet.
As blood slowed right down I ran to the truck drove farther North to other truck and hunters. They were just getting ready to go in and track a bear when they saw me pull up. I grabbed my phone and dialed 911. No service. I went and climbed up a hill where I finally got a bar on my phone. It worked!! There's more but got to go and mix bait...
Bowsite can be a handy resource...I also read the Thread "Quick Clot" a few times when it first emerged. It helped in my response in the emergency.
The dispatcher can hear me and I tell him what's going on. I was starting to tell him where we were and he said he can see where we are within a couple of metres. They pinged my phone and he got info on the hunter and injuries etc. Then said police and ambulance was on the way. OPP then phoned me back and asked if we were able to get Kef to the road. We had the Army Gurney used for Bears so I said we could and did. About 45 minutes 2 cop cruisers and an ambulance showed up. The road was so rough it rattled teeth, so until they arrived I had my doubts they would find us. The emt's got Kef in ambulance and stablalized him for trip to Hospital 78 KM's away.
Now back to the Bear Kef hit...
Uhmmm picture of Segise 1 from the other day????
Yes Brian... we took a real nice Bear off on Sunday. The larger Bear in the picture is now in the walkin' cooler!! Pictures tomorrow.
Saxon and I walk back to the bait to track Keff's bear. We had to decifer Feff's blood from the Bears. Start doing a grid search behind the bait, about 30 yards into the thick of it Saxon finds a spot of blood. Then we did another grid search at that point as blood was very spotty. After a bit Saxon says here's the Bear. As he cautiously walks up to the bedded Bear, the Bear raises his head. He has run into situations like this before so was not too excited. I walk up to the Bear and all the Bear seems to be able to do was lift his head and look at us.
We watched the Bear hoping he was going to take his last Breath, but wasn't happening. Saxon said he had an axe so we left the Bear and went back to the truck for the axe. Got back to Bear with the axe. I quietly snuck to within 8 inches of the Bears butt to take a swing at his head. Before I swung the axe we shut the lights off to calm the bear down. Few minutes later turned light on, lifted the axe high and swung hard using the blunt side of axe head. Smacked hard on the middle of the skull, bear came alive, pushed off a dead log with his back legs, and knocked me over backwards. OHHH $hit!!
I jumped back up, caught our composure and ran after the bear with the axe... This is 12:30 in the morning. In the middle of gods country chasing a wounded bear with an axe. If someone said that it was a dumb move, I would have to agree with them! No guns or bows allowed 1/2 hour after sunset.
We chased after Bear swinging, hitting the bear a couple of times then we lost site of him. We listened and picked out where he was. I went a little farther and fell in a Beaver channel of a dry beaver dam. Then I realized bear was only a foot or so from me but facing away from me. Saxon stayed above bear and me out of the channel. He couldn't get a good swing at the head as alders were in the way. Bear was vocalizing while I reached forward, took my arm and swept the small alders out from above the bears head and the head was exposed. Saxon took a swing and finally killed the bear with the axe. Hunters were behind us a hundred yards or so so we called back and forth to get back to the bait. Chased bear over 200 yards with bear circling back to original spot once.
