Got my Blackie officially scored today. Green he was 22 12/16 and today he was 21 10/16. Measurer said it's normal they shrink that much.

Great bear. Never heard of an inch off a Correct green score. That’s a lot by a long shot if the green was right. How long did you wait past 60 days to measure it.

Still huge. Just to recap, where was it taken and what was the body weight? Thanks

Great bear… congratulations. fyi there’s no way the bear shrunk that much.. In fact bears don’t normally shrink much when handled correctly ( not boiling) Just a couple of 16 ths would be average. Again congratulations on a beautiful bear

Congrats on a fantastic bear. I have to agree with Shug though. No way it shrunk an inch. Something wasnt correct on the way it was green scored.
Regardless, an all time B&C bear is no small feat. Where were you hunting and with which outfiter if you dont mind?

Booner! Congratulations! A B&C anything is rare! The shrinkage does seem excessive if it was measured right to begin with.

Depending on the scorer and how they scored it, an accident can happen. On P&Y panel one time the length was off exactly one inch. Sometimes a person can read the inch mark on the wrong side of the sixteenth lines or sometimes if a person uses a tape measure they "burn" an inch and then forget it and just read the tape as is. This could explain the potential issue. ........Mike

Congratulations on a great bear. My observation has been that when the outfitter does the green score, it tends to shrink MUCH more than if anyone else did it. They like to have those big numbers to quote on their websites!

That's an extreme amount of shrinking. It was either not green scored properly, or boiled way too much. Big bear, congrats!

Marvin my thoughts exactly… Also the reason it should be illegal for outfitters to green score…JK
But yes I agree outfitters often inflate numbers

I believe my taxi just green scored it real fast, I'm sure that's why there is such a big difference. Bear was from NW Ontario and we couldn't get a weight on him.

That’s a good one I believe it would shrink that much on a bigger skull but what do I know. Congrats.

Pretty sure there aren’t any deductions when measuring a “normal” skull. Pretty simple, length plus width.

I'm betting my taxi measured the skull with the bottom jaw on which I believe would add to the total. Thanks everyone it was a hell of a trip

Likely the green scope was the issue not the final and not the actual bone shrink

As others have said “bear of a lifetime”. Congrats.
After years of shooting and measuring bear skulls I have concluded (by examples) that to maximize the original skull size you should clean the skull with beetles. Boiling and the degree of boiling will shrink the skull way more than beetles.
