Seems to be sneaking under the radar as I haven’t seen any chatter on sheep forums or Alaska social media pages, but the subsistence board has a proposal in to continue the 24A/26B Dall sheep closure for two more seasons (‘24/‘25). This includes the entirety of the Haul Rd bowhunt. If anyone on here cares the comment period closes June 30.

Subsistence hunting? Really?...

As long as there isn't a last minute foot note that allows the villagers to hunt, then do it. Maybe also ban ewe hunts in the future as well.

Of course the “villagers” can hunt, they have a national park to play in on the other side of the road. No skin off their back. Just another way to limit non-locals.

In Canada we're not that far off from subsistence being the only kind of hunting...First Nations in Manitoba are taking the government to court to essentially make licensed hunters wait to hunt moose until they are done. Make sure they've had their fill before we get a crack.

^^^ subsistence hunting is a thing of the past, it's a tradition more than a necessity....

Ya - I witnessed a traditional hunt earlier this spring. It was awesome. All the guides (locals) were missing from the dock area - then we noticed that they were out on the lake with a couple of the boats from the lodge. They were doing tight circles and throwing a rope - looked like a rodeo on water. When they eventually got the rope around the cows neck, they dragged her around the lake until she drowned. It was awesome to witness a moose hunt done in the traditional way. Traditional nylon rope and traditional aluminum boat with traditional 20 hp 4 stroke outboard. It is important that these traditional ways are passed down from generation to generation.

Drowning a moose by dragging it with an outboard motorboat, that’s sickening.

That's doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't they just shoot it in the head with a .22? Caribou in the NWAB are hunted this way and they get many at a time. They do drag them to shore with a rope, but they kill them with a .22 first... Why would you waste gas and torture the animal when you could kill it cheaply and quickly? I've seen and heard of some horrible things happening during hunting, but I'm skeptical about the above story.

Now let's hear one more time from the Bowsiters who feel strongly that hunting land should remain in federal hands as opposed to being transferred into state ownership and mangement.
In Alaska, federal land ownership is fast becoming the death knell for "public" hunting.

Pete, two things can be true. L48 problems are not the same as AK problems.

Most, if not all, tribal lands in the USA are under federal ownership (still). Tribes are just the long-term stewards of it...

Idylwyld. There’s a difference between ignorant and dumb. Looks like you’ve got both covered. Fishing guides don’t carry rifles. But they do have rope. It’s a fairly common way for our locals to kill moose.

thedude: Precisely! Which is why when L48 hunters argue to leave federal lands under federal control, they should probably think about what the ultimate result continues to be in Alaska before making blanket statements. Disasterous.

WTFOC, I responded politely to your PM before seeing this. I regret that.
Your post above is nothing short of cowardly. Throwing out insults at people you don't know from thousands of miles away and have zero chance of ever meeting is nothing short of pathetic and cowardly.

Idylwyld - your “polite” pm could use some work. It’s ok to be ignorant of something, but your choice to double down - that’s dumb. I don’t care if you believe it or not - doesn’t change the fact that drowning moose like this is a common occurrence in northern Saskatchewan.

Just because something is “traditional” doesn’t mean it’s not heinous and absolutely ridiculous. Drowning a moose in this modern age is both. If you’ll drown a moose on purpose you are trash.

Buskill - we are in agreement. I’m not condoning the practice. My use of the word “traditional” was tongue-in-cheek. Pretty hard to qualify as traditional when it includes a 4 stroke outboard on an aluminum boat. Right? I doubt they dragged any moose around with canoes back in the day.
