I’m putting this is the caribou section as I wasn’t sure where else to put it.

I’m headed to Greenland in March for a muskox hunt, and am debating on what to do with it. I know it’s a ways out, but I’m bored and have been thinking about it.

I’m considering a life size, but the space it would require, and the cost are a factor. I’ve looked at some shoulder mounts, and am not a huge fan, but I have seen some pedestal mounts I’ve liked. I’m strongly considering just doing a euro and tanning the hide to use as a couch throw.

I was hoping those of you that have taken a muskox could post pics of what you did with them to possibly give me some ideas. Thanks in advance.

Taken three all Euro. They make amazing looking full

Mounts if you like Oxen in your basement. If you get a Shoulder pedestal Get it longer so you get more Hair. The hair is the unique part.

Euros and tanned throw hide for mine. Sold one hide as well for enough to go on a second hunt.

I have 2 one is a Euro and the other is a pedestal on a (fake) rock base, would have really liked a life size mount but the wife did not want that so that ended that.

I don’t have the room or money to justify a life size and thought my pedestal showed a good amount of hair from all sides. I’m extremely happy with it. With that said, a musk ox skull is the most impressive euro there is IMO and if I’m ever blessed to take another that is what I will have along with some type of rug/throw.

Might be able to pay for a sheep hunt just by selling the wool! Only half joking. University of Alaska has a few in Fairbanks they do research on and they sell the wool at the gift shop. Blew me away how much they were wanting for a little bundle of that stuff.

I sold a full hide, skinned and fleshed properly for $2750.

Neat, and thanks for sharing...

Anybody have a full tanned stretched out hide like a rug? Bet that long hair would be cool to lay on...

04-Jul-23
I also sold my hide and euro'd mine. I'm looking for some driftwood to mount the skull on.

I sold the front 1/2 of the cape to a taxidermist and the back half to the ladies that make stuff with the wool. I got a little less than what Nick got. No regrets - I might kill another one and I have space issues till I build a place. No way I'd get a life-size mount of anything bigger than a wolverine.

I’d think a prime, winter-condition muskox would make a mighty luxurious top layer on a bed…. At least if you like those weighted blankets ;)

Or you could go Ron LaClair and make yourself one helluva warm winter coat as he did with this Buffler ;) …. Takes a big man to fill up a coat like that, but Ron was a Giant (in more ways than one) . Shot triple-digit draw weights most of his life and well on into his sixties, as I recall…

Euro'd mine....hangs on an "Ambush" pivoting skull hooker in the corner of my office, right over my desk corner. Thanks Rod!!! They have very impressive deep, square eye sockets, horn bosses, etc. As said before, they make an impressive Euro, meant to be viewed up close. My end of August hide was so crappy I left it behind.

On the Euro, I had trouble finding anyone locally that would do it. Finally got "Deanna Roth, at Hunter's Union, Salmon Arm, BC" to take it as a whitening project, as originally I simmered it, pressure washed it, got it fully cleaned, but ended up with a gray skull, with some loss of color on the horn bases from my simmering and pressure washing.

Deanna took on my Musk Ox skull at my urging, developing a system to protect the horns (they do not come off the skull like a sheep, goat or antelope) during the extensive months long degreasing process. She now is the go to for Musk Ox Euros around here and does an outstanding job.

Hey Kurt, mine hangs on one of those too.

I have the hide just as a tanned rug and its pretty impressive , but unfortunately the Quiviut was missing when I got it back.

04-Jul-23
You think whoever tanned it was able to remove that quiviut? Sounds like some pretty special fiber….

I still haven’t done anything with the bull I took in 2019, yet. My flippin taxidermist moved to Colorado:-( I have a tanned caped ready for a shoulder mount, as well as the rest of the hide tanned, that I used as throw rug over the back of the couch.

The outfitter I hunted with in Greenland, also buys/saves the hides and currys the qiviut on a big horizontal wooden drum, that he fastens the hides too.

I bought my wife a stocking cap in Kangerlussuaq, that was made with qiviut. It’s pretty thin, but she says it keeps her head incredibly warm. It ought to, for $200 bucks!

Timing of this thread is perfect for me. I leave for Nunavut on July 30th. I just decided last week that if I'm successful I would do a Euro mount. I'm going to attempt to tan the hide myself. I'm sure it won't be perfect and I'm ok with that. Has anyone else on here tanned the hide themselves? More pictures would be great!

This doesn’t exactly work with the rest of the decor, but this is my baseline reference for “big”.

How big is an Ox hide, anyway? Bigger than an Elk?

(Bed’s Full size)

From: Bou'bound

The hide itSelf is not that massive but you gotta remember there’s 20-24 inches of hair hanging from the edge of the hide so it covers quite a bit of territory

Funny story……….:

on my muskox hunts I didn’t want to do anything with the trophy parts really when I hunted out of Cambridge Bay in the Arctic a couple times

I called Greg Robertson of Robertson’s taxidermy in Yellowknife and asked him if he wanted the hide

He said absolutely he would take it and in fact, if I wanted, he would do a euro mount of the skull using Beetles in exchange for me giving him the hide

Sounded like a good deal to me and we did that the first year I went. . He met me at a layover in Yellowknife airport on the flight back to Edmonton from Cambridge Bay and I gave him the hide and the skull

About six months later, I got the skull back from him and I had my euro for free

The second time we did that same deal and about six months after I got the skull back, he sent me another email saying that some natural history Museum in Beijing China had commissioned him to do a diorama, including a couple muskox, and he used my hide on one of the ox for that display

Kind of an interesting story to think that somewhere over in China my muskox is in a museum at least the hide part is . I don’t know what skull he put on it.

I did a shoulder mount on mine. Brought home the full hide, and sheared the backskin with my buddies llama shears. Had a scarf made for my wife and a sweater for me. The quiviat is said to be the finest wool in the world.

Pretty cool story, Bou…

I can’t believe I’ve been living within an hour of AMNH for all this time and never took my boys down there to see Pope’s and Young’s bow-killed specimens….

07-Jul-23
I believe Ron's longcoat is from a Buffalo, and not a Musk Ox.

07-Jul-23
That is correct. I had intended to mention that.

Earlier post edited. Thanks for catching the oversight.
