Hey bowsiters, looking to see if anyone has any info they may be willing to share on unit 36 for elk in WY. Plan on hunting there with a type 6 tag cow tag. Thanks!

Type 6 is for off national forest. Most of the public in 36 is in the national forest
If you go late, you MIGHT catch them in bud love

Type 6 is valid the entire area 10/10-11/5 for rifle and the archery season 9/15-9/30.

Just thought I would try to keep this near the top. I also have a cow/calf tag in 36. TommyJoe and I will be hunting together along with another friend. Any information that you can give us would be greatly appreciated. In addition to any suggestions on possible places to hunt or avoid it would be great to have some suggestions on places to stay or eat. At this point we are planning on staying in a motel but would be interested in possible cabin rentals if closer to the actual hunting area. So please let us know if you have any suggestions on inexpensive hunter friendly motels or cabin rentals, etc. It looks like Buffalo would be the nearest town to the unit? Feel free to post here or message me or TommyJoe. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can give us.

Buffalo is very hunter friendly. As for spots, my season in 36 was spent avoiding hunters as much as finding elk

Sorry, all my spots are six miles or more off the closest road.

I know a spot in 36. Should I post it for the World Wide Web to see?
C’mon guys. Go find your own spots.

Lots a of pressure around the few access corridors... rifle season is a zoo, but then again ALL gen areas in WY are a zoo now.
You will have to "earn" an elk in 36.

Hey guys not looking for your honey hole or GPS coordinates just haven't been there before. Basically hoping for very general information. We will be out to scout before the season. Just looking for a starting point and maybe at least feedback on motels or other lodging options. Bob H and 7mm08, thanks for the input, it is appreciated.

Wait for the snow and then they basically pile out of the Big Horns. Bad part most of the bottom is private.

I'm not all that familiar with 36 specifically, but I'd suggest that anyone who has not set eyes on this area and is trying to hunt elk out of a hotel in Buffalo, is likely in for a rude awakening. However, people have done more with less. Determination can often do more than herculean strength. Good luck.

Absolutely not KNHC. Glad that you and some others here are seem to know so much about my motivation. We have hunted elk in several other states and units and have shared general and specific information with other hunters numerous times. We were just trying to get an idea of what the unit is like. We are excited to have a chance to hunt elk this fall and understand that it will be a tough go for 3 out of state residents with no prior experience in the unit. We will do online scouting and be out there before the season starts to do some boots on the ground scouting. Anyway, thanks so much for the sarcastic comments.

You...are...welcome....
This scenario plays out 100's of times on forums each year. Posting unit numbers and expecting public display of areas and information. Good luck. Maybe it will work out for you.
