Buck was likely at peak testosterone levels, at which time of year a bull would be well past all that and looking to rest up and put on weight for the winter. Nothing to gain from fighting at that point and no Ego Investment to protect.
So JMO, that buck’s not bad-ass, he’s just Rut Stupid and damned lucky that the bull(s) is/are only interested in being left alone… Let’s see how that interaction pans out mid-September….

Foliage looked like October to me, the elk should still have high levels of testosterone, those bulls were just wussies...
