My buddy, Randy Giesey has been a successful elk hunter for years, but a 300 class bull has been a dream of his for a long time. He’s called big bulls for friends and family but his personal goal has eluded him. Until yesterday.
At 7 yesterday morning, Randy arrowed a monster Wyoming bull at 20 yards. I was there for the fun as was friend, Tom Vanash.
After a short celebration, the work began. When the bull was broken down, whatever we couldn’t carry out the 2.5 miles and 1500 feet, we packed a couple hundred yards from the carcass for a return trip.
Once at camp, none of us was looking forward to the final trip hauling two hinds and a front, but the young guys at camp were busy packing another bull from a worse place, so it was up to us.
Thankfully when we were about half way out with those heavy packs, the young guys came up the trail to help. They’d seen the rack at camp and Randy’s son, Luke was actually jogging up the trail. He knew how much that bull meant to his dad and watching those two tough guys hugging on the mountain while Randy still had a hind quarter on was beyond priceless. I think we were all choked up.
Randy is still up on the mountain trying to help his wife, Pam and his buddy, Tom, shoot bulls. I’m going back myself soon, but while down, wanted to share Randy’s dream and accomplishment with everyone.
Congrats to all the successful elk hunters and good luck to those still out there! Ron

Nicely done. Wyoming has some great bulls.
Safety is no accident and is a relief to know there will soon be fewer non-residents stumbling into Wyoming wilderness zones where death is all but a certainty if you don't carry a Wyoming driver's license in your wallet.
Awesome bull and awesome to have the family there to celebrate the success!!! Congratulations!
Unreal! Way to break the 300” mark!
Congrats Randy! You deserve it! Ron’s description of Luke jogging in and the pic almost got me, haha. Pretty special!

Congrats Randy and Ron. Thanks for sharing. Great to see that look of joy, satisfaction and accomplishment on those faces in the pictures.
Love it when I see the older guys and gals out there getting it done!
Randy seems to be such a genuine and good person, couldn’t be happier for him!
Congratulations Randy !! Great bull and shared by your family and friends ..
Congrats on an incredible bull as well as a great background story. Happy to see all that…Thanks for sharing Ron!
Yeah I used to think Randy was a great guy too until he took my huge bag of sour patch kids, ran off to the mountain and killed a giant bull. At least he was kind enough to Inreach me as soon as the bull hit the ground. In all seriousness Randy is one of the most humble bowhunters you’ll ever meet and yes he loves sour patch kids. Congrats again Randy, you earned him!!
Awesome post. WHAT A BULL!! Huge congrats, well done and earned.
Happy to see this thread. Congratulations on your dream bull Randy!! !
Congratulations to the hunter on the bull of a lifetime!
Great bull and even better story/pics!
Great pics, story, and bull! Good on ya!
Congrats Randy hell of a bull
What a way to smash the 300 mark. Congratulations.
Thanks Ron! I never had that bull in my dreams. Ron wanted me to get a big one which is a good start. One evening Ron was calling and Tom and I were set up to intercept. A bull came over a ridge a quarter mile out. He looked real wide but maybe not super long points. Good enough. When he got into range but hidden by some cover I thought I heard whispering while I was trying to get an arrow into him. It was Ron saying he’s too small we’ll go get a bigger one. I listened. A lot of times Ron has already killed a big bull when I get to camp but on the rare occasion he’s still got a tag he’s still tried to get me opportunities. I believe I missed this same bull a year earlier. Ron watched. I’m a lucky guy! Thanks for all the kind comments guys!
As Jason knows I took a young guy hunting in early September. His dad had coached my sons at wrestling and Hunter was 8 when I moved to Wyoming. Judging by the pictures Hunter was possessed with bowhunting. He got to hunt with famous bow hunters and thought it was the best. Thanks Jason,Ron, and Michael Park. Hunter was a really good wrestler and now was very disciplined in his diet. No dyes or soda. After Jason’s sour patch kids and my Mountain Dew I think he may be ok.
