I’m from the old school and always peed in a bottle. Unfortunately, I have two medical situations that make me pee a lot. Do you think human pee scares deer?

From: MQQSE
12-Oct-23
I’ve had them lick the accidental weewee dribbles off the ladder. Not an issue.

12-Oct-23
Not at all.

From: Jaquomo
12-Oct-23
Absolutely fricking not! That's a total old wives tale. Neither does poop, or chew spit. Go pee in a buck scrape and see how much that scares them.

Human urine is protein, salt, amino acids, etc.. Human smell comes from the billions of bacteria on the outside of our skin and in our mouths, which have nothing better to do than multiply, belch and fart all day and night.

Let it fly. I try to pee on nearby trees

I remember a study from the southern deer research group that said deer treat human urine just like their own in terms of reaction.

Rick x2.

Lou x2 , my fellow hunting buddy’s yell at me for dipping on stand, I’ve had deer come right to my spit puddle and if not lick it they got two nostrils full smellin it. 0 problems.

12-Oct-23
Nope! I used to pee in a bottle as well, then I realized it didn’t matter. Haven’t done it in 20 years.

I use a pee bottle…….

……….. To pee in at night and at home to then pour out in the area while hunting and setting up scrapes and scent posts.

That way I am sure to have what I need when and where and in the quantities I need it.

I pee in a Gatorade bottle. Because I hunt out of ground pop up blind or in my pit blind.

Out of a tree stand. I would pee off the stand.

I let it rip right off the stand, always have with no issues.

I aim to the right as I lower my bow on the left side. Gotta stand close to the edge so no errant drips end up on my mole carrying straps on the underside of the stand.

I've never had to lay cable off the side of the stand yet but I've come close to loading my pants climbing down when the urge hits hard and suddenly.

Best of luck with all your 1's and 2's!

It appears John needs a tree stand instead of a pit blind.

I stopped peeing in a bottle and peed off the stand for a while and stopped. It started smelling like a sewer. Didn't seem to bother the deer, only me. I pee in a bottle and dump it somewhere out of the way. As to poop, that doesn't seem to bother them either, but white toilet paper does. Many years ago on the last day of a hunt, I had to poop. If I got down, my hunt was over. So..... When I looked down, I had pooped on my big flashlight that I'd forgotten that I'd left at the bottom. Lesson learned. Get out and down if you can.

No big deal peeing on stand against a hurricane . Why I know a gent that can also make his "farts" sound like a buck grunt call . However I been told by nose witnesses that the smell makes deer run too the next county ........

One of the biggest challenges when peeing off your stand in cold weather is trying to figure out which clothing layers go up and which layers go down. Plus, the older I get, I have to plan further ahead when the urge first hits, to avoid a mad scramble.

I know a guy who shot his record buck in the middle of a pee session. Didn't have time to zip up and just let it hang out during the shot. I told him "Boy, you are a lot less careful with your 11th finger than I ever would be."

From: JSW

I use a bottle. I realize most of you had never had an issue with it but how do you really know? What if that one buck you really want, walks by in the dark and thinks, "I don't like the smell of this place, I'm going to avoid it for a while." You can't know.

I'm a firm believer that you do everything in your power to keep them from knowing you are around. Peeing in a bottle is a small step in that direction.

I'm generally hunting one particular, old and wary buck. The one that can be sent running by the slightest wrong impulse and you don't see him for days or ever. Go ahead and leave scent all around under your stand. I'm not going to risk it.

From: jjs

Been in several places that had an outhouse and seen big active scrapes on the backside, so much for scent .

From: Jaquomo
13-Oct-23
Jim, if deer avoided every area where they smelled urine, they would run themselves to death.

Human urine contains no human scent. That comes from the bacteria living on the outside of our skin and inside our mouths. Urine comprises 95% water. It also contains trace amounts of urea, creatinine, uric acid. The other ions found in human urine are chloride, sodium, potassium, sulfate, ammonium, phosphate, and other ions and compounds. Basically the same elements found in other predator urine, and since it drives mature bucks wild when placed in a scrape, it presumably contains similar compounds to male deer urine.

let it fly from the tree, but not in a blind. I will either pee in bottle then dump it in woods or open blind door and pee out of it.

From: Dino

I also let er rip! Last year when hunting the rut in the Edmonton Bow zone, I let fly. The day was particularly quiet and the steady stream from my well used prostate, was easily audible on the crispy cold leaves, 5 minutes later a buck showed up! Lol. He was looking for love, that sound definitely intrigued him.

From: Canepole

JSW, thank you. I'm the same way about not creating a foreign odor(s) right where I'm hunting. The other gentlemen here obviously don't have an issue with it but I think I'll hang on to my Gatorade bottle.

From: Jaquomo
14-Oct-23
Canepole, just curious, what is "foreign" about urine? Wild animals smell urine all day, every day. Why would they be afraid of it? Human urine contains basically the same elements as other carnivore urine, including 2 phenethylamine, one of the differentiators in irine of meat eaters. How would a deer come to associate human urine with humans?

From: Canepole
14-Oct-23
J, I'm not as fortunate as you. Sometimes my urine has an odor depending on what I've ate or drank. I believe if I can smell it, a whitetail with a superior nose can certainly smell it. I prefer to disturb my stand sites as a little as possible.

I did state that it appears for most who commented that they're not worried their own urine smell. Great.

I recall past threads about smoking and dipping. I feel the same way that those could be a strange, different, foreign, new, etc odor to some deer.

From: Jaquomo
14-Oct-23
Correct, whitetails, elk, and all other animals can smell it. Does it alarm them? Absolutely not. In fact, there is no study anywhere, scientific or trail cam evidence, that shows human urine alarms deer. On the contrary, they seem to be intrigued by it, especially in scrapes and mock scrapes.

But keep carrying around that bottle of pee and bag of poop if it makes you feel better.

From: Canepole
14-Oct-23
Jaquomo, I want to thank your opinion. I'm fortunate that I can control my bowels so that isn't an issue.

From: Bou’bound

I have a stand site where I often set a trail cam, all kinds of critters pass by. The next one may be curious about the scents from the others but they don't bolt. Get coyote, deer, bear, rabbit, possum, raccoon, squirrel and sometimes fisher or moose at the same spot. I don't carry a bottle in there.
