2023 Doe Slam gone wrong Razza’s & Rehor
Whitetail Deer
Contributors to this thread:
I think this is our 9th year of doing the Doe Slam. It kicks off our whitetail season each fall in the great state of Pennsylvania. A few interesting twists this year which had me shake up the thread title.
Arrow looks good.
Arrow looks good.
You guys may remember Dennis’ son Reed has become quite the bow hunter. He’s 15 this fall and is totally in to the passion. This year again he kicks off the doe slam with a nice one.
Number one doe heading to the walk in cooler.

Dragged doe to the base of my tree.
Dragged doe to the base of my tree.
The next day the slam takes a twist. It starts out fine as I shoot a doe, Reed shoots a second doe and Dennis texts me “shot one.
After I shot my doe it was early and I dragged her to the base of my stand to re-load for more hunting.
I’d call that dead bait Charlie lol

About an hour later I look behind me and see a black bear. Dang, I have a bear tag but never figured I see one here. He’s eating acorns and browsing along when all of a sudden he smells my dead doe. Their noses are incredible. As he gets closer I see he’s not a big bear and as much as I was tempted I’m not going to shoot him. He walks right to where my doe died then walks to five yards from my tree where the doe lays. Here’s a picture
Yes sir.
Yes sir.
Next we see Reed’s second doe. I’d say he’s a “full in as slam member”.

Doe slam gone wrong.
Now remember Dennis texted that he “shot one”. This is where the DOE slam goes wrong. He has me track the blood from his deer and here’s what I came upon.
LOL! You didn’t want to shoot Boo-Boo?! ;-)
Great job on the doe! And I see Reed has a good headlamp too! ;-)
Beautiful 9 point.
Beautiful 9 point.
Yep, Dennis shot his PA Buck and fooled me that we were tracking a doe.
Cooler time.
Cooler time.
Back at the cooler. By the time Dennis skinned, cleaned and hung these three deer in the cooler it was midnight. But of course are alarms are set for 5:15 am
Had me fooled! Thought for sure "gone wrong" was going to be bear related! Great job on the does guys...and a beautiful 9pt Dennis!
Number 5 for the slam team.
Number 5 for the slam team.
The next morning I don’t see any deer until 9 am then shoot this doe. In the am we hunt close to their bedding areas and they arrive later in the am.
LOL! I was wondering as well...................
You boys are KILLERS! : )
Does Dennis know a good taxidermist for that buck? Ha! Great stuff Charlie! Always love this thread every year.
Great job to all involved!
Good stuff, Charlie!
Congrats, Dennis…..one your Regular Membership too!
Good stuff ! I’m surprised the bear didn’t eat that doe.
Dang! What a great get together! Nice hunt!
Nice buck Dennis!! Sounds like fun guys.
That is my type of hunting there. Put me in a spot where there are a bunch of does and I have a bunch of tags in my pocket and I'd just as soon do that as shoot bucks. Congrats all!

Back for our pm hunt. Reed is not hunting this afternoon because he’s getting an award at school for the highest GPA. The young man is straight A’s. Must have come from Moms side of the family. Ha Ha. Dennis and I are locked and loaded.
1 feather is on the prowl ;) Give ‘‘em hell !!!
Colorado Big Boy
Colorado Big Boy
Some of you may remember my Colorado bear from last September hunting elk with Dennis & Lenny. Dennis is working on a shoulder mount for that bear. Here’s a picture (still drying so not painted yet). Very excited for this “once in a lifetime bear”.
Good luck fellas! Shoot straight!
Sounds like ya'll are having a blast. Keep up the slamming.
Congratulations!! Looks like a great time. What part of PA are you hunting in?
It is too bad that you guys don’t know somebody who knows how to score that buck so we could know what it scores… ;-)
So what went wrong!?! Sounds like a blast…
One of the great annual threads on bowsite!
Good stuff! Looks like fun!
Yes, I would just hate that to be doe hunting and have a buck like that come along. Messes up the whole plan! Good shooting guys and thanks for sharing.
Nice doe
Nice doe
Dennis got a doe this pm. # 6 We have an am and pm hunt tomorrow yet to do. Our best year was 9 so we got a shot.
That’s a cool looking bear I like his color. Thanks for the update and good luck fellas!
Six hanging now.
Six hanging now.
Thanks everyone for your comments. You’ll remember Dennis built a walk in cooler which has all the fixins. It is so well made. On Sunday Dennis will process all the deer at once and then the cleaned meat goes to the processor.
Great job guys! Fill the cooler! And great buck, D!
Such a fun trip! Keep stackin' em!
Great looking bear mount. Even without being finished. Which is saying a lot. Most won’t show you an animal at that stage because they don’t represent the final product well.
I’m surprised he let you post it Unfinished because many will judge it in that state.
Anyway that’s a good looking pose and mount
Altitude Sickness. Most people on Bowsite know the quality of Dennis’ work so he had no issue with me posting the picture.
On a positive note, today marks my 15th year anniversary of retirement. What a run.
Congrats on making the most of your retirement Charlie! Looking forward to the next 15!
Congrats on 15 years Charlie! Still 10 years to go for me! Good luck today guys!
Great thread - I always enjoy looking at the pics and reading the details behind the kills. That bear coming into your doe was a bonus to see.
Congrats to all and good luck on your last day.
Crisp, clear and calm am hunt. # 7.
Congrats on your retirement Charlie! 15 years? When did you start working................at 15 years old?! ;-)
Way to go Dennis! Keep Shootin’! : )
Love this thread every year! Congrats Dennis!
Way to go guys, put a couple more down this afternoon!
Outstanding all around. Congratulations. Ed F
Great thread , you guys are all smiles WTG
Here’s a picture of Reed getting his Academic Award.
We are on our way for the last pm sit.
Knock some more down Charlie!
Outstanding gents!
Way to go Reed! Proof that redneck Derry kids can have some serious brains as well!
Doing a little film Dennis or just sitting with Reed!?
Nice job Reed! Some of the guys on here are pretty smart. A few of them can even bowhunt. Charlie I’m glad you’re not wasting your golden years
Great job guys!!! That's what I call herd management.

And a big congratulations to Reed on his award! Keep up the good work in school!
Great job guys, congrats on making more memories!
Not bad for 3 days.
Thanks for the comments. I’ll pass on the kind word to Reed. He’s lucky to have a few days around Charlie!
Hopefully Charlie taught him a thing or two about retiring at 30 so he can hunt like he does still come 45 ;)
