I've actually spent days talking to the guys who are bringing back the woolly mammoth and Tasmanian tiger. Their technology and backing is incredible. Invited me for a tour if I ever get to California which I would certainly do if I go there. To them it isn't an if but when.
The reports were of flocks of passenger pigeons that would "blacken the sky".Think if that was brought back with no chestnut trees.Crops would be devastated.Adapt or die.
It looks like the American chestnut is on it's way back. they have a 15/16 hybrid that looks to be working and a fungus resistant GMO that seems to be working too. The most important aspect though is the lumber was highly prized and the mast was generous so there will be a lot of people that will want to plant them.
As long as they're carbon neutral! I guess it's ok.

I don't think there has ever been a cloning of any avian species only mammals so far. This project is interesting but the technology is not available yet. The band-tailed pigeon is the closest relative and there are several states that have seasons for them.

You will often read of two causes: Commercial. exploitation and habitat destruction. However, there were large forested areas even as this pigeon was going extinct. Numbers were reduced until this couldn't happen:
"This was a highly gregarious species – the flock could initiate courtship and reproduction only when they were gathered in large numbers; smaller groups of Passenger Pigeons could not breed successfully, and the surviving numbers proved too few to re-establish the species. "
I'm a retired wildlife biologist who has lead the restoration of some extirpated species (namely elk to the east), but not species that were totally extinct. Frankly, I'd rather resources all be aimed at what kills our friends, family, and others who contract cancer, Alzheimers, etc.
Yeah, it kills me to think how many dollars go into “Wildlife Rehabilitation” programs…
OK — If you find an injured black-footed ferret (the OG BFF!) or Condor or Ivory-billed woodpecker, yeah, let’s see if we can get a salvage on a member of a critically endangered species. But otherwise, put those dollars to work on habitat and water quality….
The bandtail pigeons hang out around my neighborhood in the summer. They usually leave about Sept. A couple of years ago the main flock left leaving behind a lone individual. The wife feeds the birds in the winter so he had plenty to eat. Homer left the next fall when the flock came back.
Lately we have been getting eurasian doves hanging around. No season, shoot on sight as they are an invasive species per fish and game. May have to get a bb gun.

Yeah, had read the closest living relative to the Passenger Pigeon was the Band-tailed Pigeon and migrates in large flocks like the Passenger Pigeon...
Those Eurasians are pretty tasty. Glad we don’t have them here, but if we did, I’d eat a lot of them…
The flocks that hang out around my place number about 30. And the Eurasians I am talking about are birds, the feathered kind, not the English version.

Ok Zbone,,, it's a crappy picture, but I finally got one of that bird that looks like a phase 3 Passenger Pigeon in my backyard. Pic was taken with my phone which is the best I could at the moment. Last year they migrated off right after I mentioned I'd seen them (go figure). There were 8 of them then and now I've only seen 1 or 2 recently. These could be Whitewing doves, but it has way more coloration to it.
First pic is a stock photo of what it looks like to me... just no missing toes, Second pic there are 2 doves. Lower right-hand corner is a Ringtail dove. It has the ring around its neck just not visible the way its laying. And in the upper lefthand corner is the more colorful dove.
We can do all these wondrous things through science, and yet, cancer still exists.
