The Passenger Pigeons are coming back... True... They are trying to recreate the Passenger Pigeon through genetic engineering since 2012 and possibly birds by 2025:

"The Great Passenger Pigeon Comeback set an ambitious goal to hatch the first generation of new Passenger Pigeons before 2025"

The technology was first used on Elvis Presley. Very successfully.

A second experiment was tried on Nancy Pelosi, but that one just added sixty years to her face.

Brotsky for the win!

I believe the die out of the chestnut is what lead to their extinction in the first place. I wonder if they intend to ever have wild populations again? T-roy is going to have to give out a lot more nuts!

Ambush, I'm not sure how "successful" the Elvis cloning was, since all the clones seemed to only have enough intelligence to get jobs flipping burgers at various places around the U.S!

I've actually spent days talking to the guys who are bringing back the woolly mammoth and Tasmanian tiger. Their technology and backing is incredible. Invited me for a tour if I ever get to California which I would certainly do if I go there. To them it isn't an if but when.

The reports were of flocks of passenger pigeons that would "blacken the sky".Think if that was brought back with no chestnut trees.Crops would be devastated.Adapt or die.

It looks like the American chestnut is on it's way back. they have a 15/16 hybrid that looks to be working and a fungus resistant GMO that seems to be working too. The most important aspect though is the lumber was highly prized and the mast was generous so there will be a lot of people that will want to plant them.

As long as they're carbon neutral! I guess it's ok.

Something to do with frog DNA, then lots of screaming, and blood, tissue debris; and death...

Since this is a bowhunting forum why not bring back the Irish Elk, the biggest antlered animal that ever existed?

Better be careful. The Center for Biological Diversity is already ramping up judge shopping efforts In Montana to restore them to their historical range.

Greg…..might be a good idea to start doing some research, especially on the Montana forum. Just don’t ask for anyone’s honeyhole.

It would be pretty cool to hunt Prehistoric Beasts with a Prehistoric Weapon.

I’m gonna lobby for a ban on Compounds for T. rex. Only fair.

Gotta keep it real... T-rex was 65 million years before the first man. (maybe more, too lazy to look it up)

I don't think there has ever been a cloning of any avian species only mammals so far. This project is interesting but the technology is not available yet. The band-tailed pigeon is the closest relative and there are several states that have seasons for them.

26-Oct-23
“My comment is so ridiculous it is believable.”

Well, THAT comment is apparently only ridiculous enough to be entirely NOT believable…

‘Cuz FWIW, it never occurred to me to give either one any serious thought….

But then I suppose it’s true that there are people who buy into Flat Earth foolishness and those who think fossils are (literally) a diabolical plot to lead people astray….

As Einstein supposedly said, “there are only two things which are infinite— the Universe and the human capacity for Stupidity. And I’m not so sure about the Universe…”

Make 'em bigger. Jurassic Pigeons. Bigger'n Canadas. And slower. Shoot 'em with flu-flus & c-o-c broadheads. Could be fun ;-)

You will often read of two causes: Commercial. exploitation and habitat destruction. However, there were large forested areas even as this pigeon was going extinct. Numbers were reduced until this couldn't happen:

"This was a highly gregarious species – the flock could initiate courtship and reproduction only when they were gathered in large numbers; smaller groups of Passenger Pigeons could not breed successfully, and the surviving numbers proved too few to re-establish the species. "

I'm a retired wildlife biologist who has lead the restoration of some extirpated species (namely elk to the east), but not species that were totally extinct. Frankly, I'd rather resources all be aimed at what kills our friends, family, and others who contract cancer, Alzheimers, etc.

27-Oct-23
Yeah, it kills me to think how many dollars go into “Wildlife Rehabilitation” programs…

OK — If you find an injured black-footed ferret (the OG BFF!) or Condor or Ivory-billed woodpecker, yeah, let’s see if we can get a salvage on a member of a critically endangered species. But otherwise, put those dollars to work on habitat and water quality….

The bandtail pigeons hang out around my neighborhood in the summer. They usually leave about Sept. A couple of years ago the main flock left leaving behind a lone individual. The wife feeds the birds in the winter so he had plenty to eat. Homer left the next fall when the flock came back.

Lately we have been getting eurasian doves hanging around. No season, shoot on sight as they are an invasive species per fish and game. May have to get a bb gun.

Yeah, had read the closest living relative to the Passenger Pigeon was the Band-tailed Pigeon and migrates in large flocks like the Passenger Pigeon...

28-Oct-23
Those Eurasians are pretty tasty. Glad we don’t have them here, but if we did, I’d eat a lot of them…

From: Coyote 65

The flocks that hang out around my place number about 30. And the Eurasians I am talking about are birds, the feathered kind, not the English version.

Ok Zbone,,, it's a crappy picture, but I finally got one of that bird that looks like a phase 3 Passenger Pigeon in my backyard. Pic was taken with my phone which is the best I could at the moment. Last year they migrated off right after I mentioned I'd seen them (go figure). There were 8 of them then and now I've only seen 1 or 2 recently. These could be Whitewing doves, but it has way more coloration to it.

First pic is a stock photo of what it looks like to me... just no missing toes, Second pic there are 2 doves. Lower right-hand corner is a Ringtail dove. It has the ring around its neck just not visible the way its laying. And in the upper lefthand corner is the more colorful dove.
