Kansas Hunt This Year ?
Whitetail Deer
Contributors to this thread:
Will there be a live hunt this year on the Kansas property. Getting to be that time.
I’ve heard corn piles are drawing does, but big bucks aren’t stupid yet.
Next week.
They just got done pouring 16 tons of corn at all the stands. We’re dedicating this hunt to Sito. It’s gonna be epic. ;-)
Only 16 tons? Deer gonna have that cleaned up in a couple days!
—Jim
Treeman, 16 tons per stand. They don’t fool around! Ha!
“ I’ve heard corn piles are drawing does, but big bucks aren’t stupid yet.”
For the life of me I can’t understand why a guy that rarely hunts spends so much time on a hunting forum?
I was wondering the same thing Bou...........................glad to hear it's coming up!
I'm heading out on Wed evening after work - some nice bucks on camera this year, 10 day hunt. Can't wait
Good luck. Bang some yotes to!
“We’re dedicating this hunt to Sito”
If you go to Charlie’s Sunrise thread, you’ll see a pic that SitO posted …. hunting over corn!!!
It might be geese but, Just like weed is a gateway drug …..,,,
I always love following the Kansas hunt…..good luck and kill another hammer!
Pathetic and forgettable...spend your money, slap yourselves on the back, its a cancer on our hunting heritage.
I agree sito. People like you are pathetic, forgettable. And a scourge on hunting and free practice.
Go, don’t spend the money you don’t have, Pat yourself on the back for being super superior
SitO. Pathetic and forgettable. Umm. Kind of like...... YOU
Always like to follow this Kansas hunt. Good luck
RK, pathetic would be you, the guy that kills people's pet dogs and brags about mailing them the collars. You are a POS.
Simple hunting question devolves to personal attack in about five posts. What a mess. What’s wrong with people.
NCK: You’re mistaken. Pat killed a P&Y deer on that Iowa hunt. You can see the Buck on his 2019 Trophy photo.
96.354% of archery killed deer are going to, or coming from some sort of food. The rest are killed during the rut like today. I’ve seen 4 bucks so far this am sit.

Nick,
Hunting forums aren’t for those that hunt anymore. They are for those that want to tear down those that do
The only time I have seen Pat not hunt with bait was in Iowa because it was illegal. And guess what he was unsuccessful. Its the only way he can fill the tag.
Might be the dumbest post ever
Corn fields can be a guys best friend
Looking forward to the hunt again this year.
Good Luck Pat Looking forward
A lot of jealousy here, hammer a big one!
Hope you kill one bigger than last year Pat. He was just a little guy ;) Good luck buddy
Good luck Pat. I love following along on the hunts. Hope you kill a giant
Goodluck Pat! Looking forward to following along.

My Iowa buck. Hit the link to watch the video. Just so you can be more informed.
I’ve shot close to 400 whitetails in my life. Only 40 or so over bait.
But it’s ok if you want to disparage me if it makes you feel better. I really don’t give a shit. Carry on.
And by the way, I’m not really a big fan of baiting either. Really wish they would do away with it in Ohio. I fully understand the downside to it. But where legal and effective I can also enjoy baited hunts too. I’m not a hater.
Congrats Pat, nice buck!!!
Since you realize it's not hunting, that it's decimating the quality of the herd, and nothing more than a point & shoot...why would you or anyone continue to exacer-"bait"?
Sorry for opening this thread with the polarizing question if someone was going hunting.
Looking forward to following along again this year!
Mark
Nice Iowa buck Pat! I’m with you on the baiting issue. It’s not legal in Illinois and I’m glad of it. I also think food plots blur the lines somewhat. Having said that, I have no doubt that most of the deer I’ve killed were going to or coming from a bean or corn field. Or standing in one of them when shot. So if it’s legal, carry on, I can’t judge anyone. Good luck in Iowa, always look forward to the write up.
Man the teenage girl BS on here is out of control sometimes. Get a grip
Good luck Pat, keep us all up to date. It’ll be nice to have another bowhunting thread on here :)
Bou, no worries. I brought it up too. They can’t bully me. I don’t really care what anyone thinks.
This is more about despising non residents than baiting. Every Kansas resident my outfitter knows baits around here.
But if KDWP bans baiting next year-I’m ok with that. We’ll be a little less successful but will adapt to hunting corridors, scrapes, and calling. Very confident this hunt will still be awesome.
I’m in a tree right now enjoying my first night hunting. I’m also having a little bit of fun with this topic. Dare I say; they took the bait? ;-)
Good luck to all you guy’s hunting. Should be a lot of bucks cruising.
Little warm here in Kansas. Ned stay out of the corn fields.
I picture some bowsiters starting the day out arguing with the guy looking back at them in the mirror after they brush their teeth.
After arguing with the guy in the mirror for while they yell out “you are an idiot!”
Then they promptly log onto bowsite to spread some of their joy around to others.
Back in 2010 or so we sold some bulls to a rancher in SW Kansas and I hauled them out to the ranch. The ranch had about 5 miles of river bottom and big winter wheat fields I got to know the rancher and long story short he told me to put in for his unit and come out and kill a whitetail.
Never had killed a WT deer let alone seen one , all mule deer here. He had me sit in a tree stand at a feeder and damn I didn’t think WT got that big. I had action at that stand like crazy. He told me don’t shoot a dink wait for a good one. About 3 days in a big, heavy 5x5 and some does came in, one of them caught me drawing back and they blew out. The next night a big broken something by something came in trash all over, broken tines, huge body he had 7 or 8 does come in ahead of him. He would run a doe around then go after another one. It got to last light and I finally had about a 35 yard shot. I pulled back and let one go… clean miss….I had one morning hunt left and I had to get back to NM. Got to the stand about 6:30 and freezing cold. Never saw a deer until around 9 am I saw a nice big buck walking across an opening about 100 yards out ..no shot. At 11:00 I had to get down and head for home. Never did kill one over bait but that was one action pack few days. We hunt mulies here spot and stalk and climb the mountains all day and glass for hours. It’s a physically demanding hunt just like hunting elk but I would love to get back to SW Kansas and sit a stand with a feeder waiting on a big corn, milo, winter wheat fed, high, wide n heavy whitetail to come in !!
Good Luck Pat! I still remember that one year you had video of something like 9 bucks chasing one hot doe!
I'd like to see that video ^^^.
Good luck Pat. I always look forward to your Kansas hunt. Screw the haters!!!
It's not the NR's for me, I hunt other states, most of us do. If someone wants to come here and actually hunt, that's great and they should have the opportunity. KS is a special place.
You get it Pat..."by the way, I’m not really a big fan of baiting either. Really wish they would do away with it in Ohio. I fully understand the downside to it" but only in OH because you live/own land there? NM highcountry, pretty sure you wouldn't want baiting in NM for deer/elk?
Unfortunate that some who would fight, and stand staunchly for hunting on this site, would support such practices. Not a one could equate it to hunting, there's no comparison.
Don't care what you think of me, just think about what comes after you.
It’s about the money.
It’s about the money.

I hope most of you are in a tree somewhere in the Midwest, I hear grunting,
Good luck Pat hope you have a great hunt Lewis
Good luck Pat,hopefully we will get some cooler weather at end of week.Remember it's your website, you could thin out the jealous ones.
Always enjoy following you on this hunt. Looking forward to the pics and stories.
I enjoy Pat’s hunts too, mostly because there’s decent pics and video of deer.
I just wish he wouldn’t make up shit for the Blood Trail challenges. :)
Best of luck Pat, look forward to following along.
Pat, I’m looking forward to following your hunt! Best of luck!
I passed this buck last night. I may regret it!
That's a really pretty deer. That would be a hard buck to pass on a 7 day hunt when the rest of the 7 days are going to be 70 and 80 degrees! But you do you :)
NM highcountry and I feel the same way exactly. Very well said. We hunt hard. Hunting whitetail is a time to relax for me. Hang out and watch wildlife.
That’s a great buck and it would be hard for me to pass him. There must be some bigger one’s coming by that you want to shoot. Good luck!
There must be something very special in the area to pass him up. Best of luck!
Pat do the haters have you rattled?
That is a beauty of a buck.
Man..the haters. Sheesh.
Good luck, guys!
I passed on one Nov 1 I am wondering about too , Good luck !
Would be hard to pass a clean, big 8 like that. Hope it pays off for you Pat!
A big 8 like that is close to my dream deer. No way I could’ve passed him! But, you must high hopes of something even better;)
Good luck Pat. I always enjoy this annual hunt.
The only pass on that guy would hopefully be a pass through just saying good luck hope you don’t regret it but have fun that’s all this should be we’re not hunting to exist we’re hunting to have fun Lewis
Lot of fanboys in here that raise hell when the tables are turned and there’s an issue in their state, be it quotas, preference points, NR season dates etc. And/or are quiet as a mouse when changes actually do benefit them personally, which says even more. For Pat to poke fun at Kyle and then say he wishes it was banned in Ohio shows the respect level for the Kansas hunt. It’s just another tag. I get it, it’s legal, he doesn’t own any land, no pressure to kill, hang out with the bros, etc. Can shoot a nice buck or not, and then on to the next. But baiting has indeed ruined a lot of properties, permissions and the hobby in general for quite a few folks, both resident and non. As long as Pat gets #401 I guess that’s what most here care about though! :)
Link to the live hunt would be great if you could. Can’t find it if you have as in the past. Have to go to features to get it.
Deer hunting has doubled property value in Kansas. Your dreaming if you think they will out law Baiting. Property owners would lose billions.
That eight is a tanker! Hope someone gets to lay their hands on him.
Pat, the deer you are now after must be a magnum! Good luck to all.
Good luck Pat, how bout you post a picture of the Ghost!
I hope you’re dragging out the ghost!
Not much changed around here...lol..
Hey buddy. Glad your back!!
This is the best thread on the internet. But, I think there was some initial baiting by the OP. ;)
Beauty of an 8 but I can understand Pat's decision to not shoot the day before his 7 day hunt. Maybe he shoots it the last day of his hunt.
My buddy got lucky on our CO eastern plains hunt and passed a good buck opening day that he shot 4 days later with 15 minutes left in his hunt. 16 minutes before that he was all regrets.
"Never pass on the first day what you would shoot on the last" is good advice but sometimes it works out for the hunter if they don't.
My bet is the outfitter will dump another 60 tons of corn near the "ghost's" draw and lure him in for a shot. :) JK
Good luck Pat!
Any day of the hunt that deer is a shooter and I would try my best to leave with him in my posession.
Factor in the heat and lack of deer activty during hunting hours, I would be eccstatic to have taken him.
Hopefully ghost shows or that decision might haunt Pat.
“Never pass on the first day what you would shoot on the last" is good advice but sometimes it works out for the hunter if they don't.”
That mindset has a place but only if the hunter prioritizes the kill over the experience. If he didn’t he would never choose to forgo all but one day of experience for an animal that was not initially valued as worth doing so for.
I have zero regrets passing that first day buck. Would do it again. If I go home unsuccessful I’m fine with that. I get to experience Kansas once a year and I didn’t think that buck was worth depriving myself of the full experience. I 190” buck would be worth it, but not a 160/8.
Just personal choice.
Ya, if you know there's a giant in the area, that 8 gets a pass. I personally would love to have a big-8 but... Pat wants to have the biggest deer on the lodge photo wall. Not just the third best 8.
Hey Travis, nice to see your handle. C
My guess? The negative comments are affecting Pat about as much as they would affect me. ZERO % .
I knew that Pat would find a way to get out of twice daily updates......all day sits should only be allowed if he has internet service and takes his laptop into the blind with him.....
Hey Travis, nice to see your handle. C
Dang, the trolls really came out from under the bridge for this one.....................
Get that “ghost” Pat! My money is on the GHOSTBUSTER! ;-)
Pat, hearing from my friends in NE that the movement it poor at best. I am tagged out so no reports from me personally other than driving through some of the best areas there are in NE at dusk last night and seeing less than 10% of the deer I would have expected.
Good luck!
Where;s the link for this hunt? I like to follow the day by day as in years past
In our state most deer taken in the hunting seasons have corn in their stomach from somewhere. Where I hunt we can not bait.
Its good to see some of the old timers still around. Good luck all!!
Went into one of my Kansas farms this morning to get everything in check before heading home tomorrow and caught this guy trying to keep other bucks away from his lady friend…
Lol WOW just clicked on this thread. Some guys have a serious case of blue balls and pent up negativity! Always look forward to this hunt myself!

“You not hunting Mark?“
Forest I took this guy a couple days ago…The one in the front..
So much for those who made it sound like this is a slam dunk hunt
Nothing is guaranteed or easy in the field.
Well heck Pat, I don't blame you for passing on that buck. The gravy would be tough on that deere.
I remember when the Sox were down 3-0 to the yanks and came back to kick their ass. Hang in there it ain’t over!
reading this thread for the first time, reminds me of why I drifted away from this site for several years... Wow - just wow, and WTFF am I reading?
Good luck Pat... My buddy been in Kansas almost two weeks and it's been slowest ever. It's been same here in NJ since about end of October. That 10/28 full moon possibly came at the worst possible time. It just brought far too high a percentage of does into estrous at once and created possibly the worst case of "lockdown" I have ever experienced. JMHO - other can certainly refute that but it does seem to be the case.
Setting up in well known historical rut funnels has been futile, there is no reason for a mature buck to travel. He literally roles out of bed and the next harem member is there ready to breed. Hence - it just becomes the "spike show" for all the dinks that can't get a date.
I didn't know the full moon brought does into estrus. Did I learn someting new?
Grey Ghost's Link
"I didn't know the full moon brought does into estrus. Did I learn someting new?"
No, it doesn't, according to numerous extensive studies. But old myths never seem to die.
Matt
Nothing has changed Jack…you can’t let a few live rent free in your head……it’s not worth it….
Well just from the way the last update went… let me say congratulations Pat on taking that giant
Yeah GG I was being a bit sarcastic with my statement. Studies have proven over and over that estrus is triggered by photoperiodism.
I'm thinking the same thing Shug.
I guess my memory is bad. I thought this hunt happened on the Hashknife. Not hunting related. But the first set of cattle I ever bought were Woolfolk & Jarnagin cattle at Pratt Livestock. Remember that set like it was yesterday.
I remember when the primos guys hunted the Hashknife, my lord the big deer they killed
Former resident in the late 70's. Moved back east in the early 80's and continued to return every fall to bird hunt and then bowhunt as an NR in the mid to late 90's on. Killed some nice bucks on both private and public. My hunting partner has fallen prey to this corn craze. No more scouting, just head to the co-op. Use to get up at five and check the wind and weather. Now the alarm goes off and they grab the cellphone from the nightstand and pop open the tactecam app to check the cameras. That 100% determines what stand will be filled.
Some made the comment that if they get rid of baiting, property values will plummet. I think that says it all. Maybe I'm just getting old and have moved on to that next stage of why I hunt.
Would some overgrown properties that have been allowed to go to shit vs the native prairie they should be lose some value, possibly. Forest is dreaming that it would have any serious effect on the vast majority of lands in Kansas. Most farmers and ranchers I know would love if the rec value in their areas would tank. Also, this is assuming the value is strictly tied to being able to dump corn. It’s not. The value is antlers. Whether or not you can dump corn the demand will still very much be there as long as there’s big deer in Kansas. My grandad started buying ground in Kansas in the 40’s. He used to drive me around and occasionally mention what he paid for a certain place. They’ve all doubled many times over, and were doing so long before anyone gave a shit about deer. Forest lives in a dreamworld and he’s the center of it.
Your right! My world is pretty much a dream. Land value goes up every year and i get to shoot big deer with my friends and family. Kansas is awesome!
I am not sure I agree with the superficial blood draw ends a hunt. I have never heard a good reason for it.
I would not call a solid arrow to the hip a superficial hit, and can agree with the logic of that ending a hunt. I do not believe you were calling that a superficial hit.
What would be the reason, that if you can document (with video footage) that a hit is superficial, that it justifies ending a hunt?
Tough luck Pat! As always it was great to follow along and hope you draw next year so we can follow along what is generally a great hunt with exceptional deer.
Ham shots can be fatal... Does the outfitter have a tracking dog? Is the broadhead still in him? Would give him all night and take up with a tracking dog in the morning...
That was a beautiful buck you passed. Good luck in Ohio.
Don't agree with the method, and it's obvious Pat doesn't either, regardless I have to say you are an honest man...appreciate that.
Thanks guy or keeping it real. Never y guarantees if one ch is in the woods hunting. This is not a video game. It’s real.
I’m truly sorry for your bad luck, Pat. Are you going to post the shot video, anyway?
Matt
How are the other 2 hunters doing?
E4?
What's the winner get? All expense paid Russian combo Bighorn/Brown bear hunt?
No, a Marco Polo Argali Sheep hunt...8^)
Dang! If I win go ahead and donate the hunt to someone else. I'm pretty busy during that season.
I shot one in the butt once. Slight quartering away and probably more alert than I thought. I felt sick seeing the arrow land where it did. He was down in less than 150yds. Got lucky and centerpunched the femoral artery.
Have posted on this before, usually on Chuck Adams threads...8^) but anyhow I can think of at least 5 accidental ham shot I've hit and recovered all of them, BUT all were broadside and near the dead center of the ham hits if I remember right... 3 with guns and 2 with arrows... One I killed with a .22 rimfire as a kid (long story) musta hit the femoral artery... Learned to treat them like a gut shot, let them lay overnight... 3 or the 5 were still alive the following day but was able to get close enough to finish it...
Quartered away, high in the ham at an angle, I believe Pat, if he says it'll live, it'll live...
Not sure what happened, did he kill a KS buck?
Why did the cows spend 90 minutes by you?
I’m sorry pat, couldn’t resist
I’m sorry pat, couldn’t resist
Why did the cows spend 90 minutes by you?
Land has gone up tremendously all across the country, regardless if the state allows baiting or not.
Dave, He hit a buck in the hindquarter and it was determined that the hit was fatal. The outfitters policy is if you draw blood you are done.
This statement is not meant as a direct shot at Pat, more of a general rule of thumb (for everyone) that is reiterated here.
"Never shoot at an animal that has been staring you down." Tip your hat and wait for another opportunity.
Where do you see any indication they determined the hit was fatal. Not berating the policy. That documented. I just did not see where pat said the hit was likely fatal. Just the opposite.
“ He ran about 300 yards before we lost him. Not a drop of blood. We all agreed the deer appeared to be healthy. I can't say I'm 100% confident that he'll survive, but after seeing him run off the odds are, he will be. ”
I think two dogs left out a word "not". I've done it too many times to not proof read my posts (and it still happens).
"Never shoot at an animal that has been staring you down."
Why not? Last one I shot caught me reaching for my bow as he was about to get by me and I had to move pretty quick. He gave me the stink eye for a bit then nervously turned and headed back the way he came. I got to full draw as he went behind some tree limbs and stopped him when he stepped in the clear. I sent an arrow through his lungs.
Sometimes i shoot them just because they are staring at me funny!
Yeah I disagree with the staring down no-shoot policy. And I'm fairly confident that Pat has killed and been around enough whitetails to be a good judge of body language, levels of alertness, etc. I don't generally second guess people's shot choices. I wasn't there.
Tough luck Pat. Better luck next year!
My error. My post should have said not fatal. No
Would love to see the video but it appears that ain’t happnin’
I want to see the video as well. Another 8 point near the 160 mark. Wonder if most people understand how big an 8 has to be to make 160? And then to see 2 on the same trip. Wow.
I pray CO never allows baiting. It has changed Kansas for the worst. I can’t imagine sitting on a corn pile that has to be bigger than your neighbors pile to change a deers natural pattern.
Nothing against people who do it. It’s just not for me.
Hell I felt guilty shooting a Texas hog from under a feeder. To each their own.
Pat, what bow were you shooting?
I always look forward to reading about this annual hunt. Thanks again for providing the daily activity. While the ending is not what you had hoped, it is always enjoyable waiting in anticipation for the next report.
The buck I hit is back on cam. I was pretty sure he was gonna be ok. This is confirmation.
Good deal.
Cool, good to hear,,, nice buck...
Is that the wound on the hip?
Amazing animals...
Wonder if he'll grow a non-typical side next yr?
"Wonder if he'll grow a non-typical side next yr?"
Yeah would be interesting if Pat's people keep track of him during the growing season next year... If he walks with a limp I believe the theory is the right side antler may become nontypical... While the bone is growing I think weight distribution with a limp is what may cause it if what I had read is true... Front quarter same side, hind quarter opposite side...
That wound does not seem like the devastating trauma that would impact skeletal and antler development. He got hit by a 500 grain arrow not a truck.
Never been on a whitetail hunt. I need to go sometime.
Glad to see he lived. Knowing that he is alive and well, can you go back late season and target him?
Njbuck, I’m sure I can work something out with the outfitter but season closes 12:31 and I don’t have the time to get out there unless I miss Christmas and it’s not worth it.
A 190” maybe? JK
Bnbow- here is a 160" 8 point. He had 4" more in stickers, and one split brow broken off. The G2s were 15"
"That wound does not seem like the devastating trauma that would impact skeletal and anger development"...
Yeah Bou but it's about a limp or not... As said, if he favors it any and has a little hitch in his gitty up, even just a little will change his weight distribution even affecting the way he lays... Now thinking about it, read years ago the way they lay affects antler growth... Can't remember how it goes now, but some bucks prefer a certain side to lay on depending on the wind and terrain and why antlers of most or many are bigger on one side than the other... Has to do with blood circulation and gravity when antlers are in the developing stage...
Glad to see he is still alive! Dang tough animals!
I'm glad he's still alive, but I doubt he's fully recovered. Hopefully the wound doesn't get infected and he's remains mobile enough to survive the winter.
Matt
So is there a slick trick in that hip? Or did you find the arrow and head? Glad he's still alive and hope there's no lingering infection or illness from it.
"J6 or K6 zbone"
Huh??? Not hard to do, but assuming that is a question,,, and Thornton's photo has me confused...8^)
I'm just showing a 160" buck, that's all. As others agree, I don't think the buck shot in the hip was 160"
He’s not a 160 8. I said in my update he was probably a mid 150’s buck.
Wish I shot him at this angle. Unfortunately as I started drawing he turned hard quartering. A shot I take often but this time I blew it.
Pat - Would assume that photo taken with hand worked camera pre-wound without a trail -cam stamp and not seeing anything high on the left hip???
That’s a still pic from the video I took shortly before I shot him.
Cool, thanks for sharing... Amazing he came back...
Has the video been posted, yet?
A limp or how a buck beds down affecting antler growth...does anyone actually believe that? I mean where the pedicel isn't actually damaged and the buck is otherwise healthy. If yes, you got anything to back that up besides opinion?
"A limp or how a buck beds down affecting antler growth"
The way a buck lays affecting antler growth I do remember was only a theory in one of Rothhaar's books... The wound/limp/nontypical antler growth thing I believe was also mentioned in that chapter (but don't quote me on that) but do think there was scientific data behind that... Lemme look around and see what I can find...
Zbone's Link
From Mississippi State University,,, here ya go:
"damage-related injury is when a buck suffers a crippling injury to his hind leg and his opposite side antler grows abnormally. The specific cause has not been confirmed but alterations to the buck's walk, or gait, due to the crippled leg may alter blood flow or nerve stimulation, resulting in the altered growth of the opposite antler"
https://www.msudeer.msstate.edu/abnormalities.php#:~:text=Damage%20to%20the%20antler%20during%20the%20velvet%20stage%20can%20result,opposite%20side%20antler%20grows%20abnormally.
That’s an interesting article. Thanks Zbone
Holy s#%t. I've never heard of that before. The science I read about isn't correlated to a limp or bedding down but bone/disease injuries in the legs, Osteoporosis, and deformed antler growth.
Learn something everyday. Life/organisms are strange and complex.
"Learn something everyday" - Me too KSflatlander, or at least I try too ever since being a little kid obsessed by these amazing animals, and I'm now in my mid sixty's so I've read and witnessed a lot...8^)
I just hope the buck survives. I wouldn’t want to spend a winter with a broad head in my hip.
I hope that buck survives but I doubt it will knowing that the infection will probably kill it with a long slow death.
Those pictures of it feeding out of a corn feeder are pretty sad. Looks like livestock to me? It's too bad that an "outfitter" with such a great area would offer hunts that resort to dumping piles of corn so clients from CT (or anywhere else) can come and sit in a stand over it to kill a deer.
It's kind of funny how Pat never show's the pictures of the deer he's hunting with their nose to the feeders until they have been wounded. How many have been killed with their mouths full of corn?
Pat, you're not hunting. I honestly believe you know you aren't. You're sitting on bait piles done by someone else hoping for a shot at a trained buck. Enjoy your "hunt"/kill. Bowsite Exclusive. What a joke.
Can't wait to be banned as this site has been going downhill for a while.
I have no problem with people "hunting" baited deer if it's legal. Enjoy. It's not hunting.
Quinn, we don’t ban people for their opinions. I have no problem with what you posted.
I hope you’re wrong about that buck not surviving. The broadhead is out and we saw the deer with no noticeable limp. Hopefully someone else shoots him.
Quinn, don't ever come hunt whitetails in the South then if you don't like corn....lol
When I was younger I shot and cleaned many a deer with a broadhead stuck in it's spine. Wounds were healed over and you couldn't tell until cleaning them. Sometime infection sets in, sometimes it doesn't.
Funny when I see people here and on other threads say a deer will likely die of infection, etc, yet year in and year out we see proof what these animals can survive and of course we seem to be frequently talking about how tough these animals are. Of course any outcome is possible when you break skin, just like there is risk for anyone when we go in for a simple medical procedure. However, how many deer do you see or hear about with previous wounds or foreign objects embedded such as a broadhead, piece of arrow, piece of antler, bullet, or birdshot lodged in their spines, shoulders, legs, head, etc. from prior years? I think cameras now more than ever in the woods just proves that many survive.
Pat's arrow did not hit anything vital nor did it hit guts to release bacteria and make the deer go septic. Although no one can 100% say this deer will survive its wounds, IMO I believe its very likely this deer will survive from this wound. It would be interesting to get a follow-up if someone is able to kill this deer.
Quinn, don't ever come hunt whitetails in the South then if you don't like corn....lol
It’s so funny to sit back and watch this site and all the different opinions. I’ve deer hunted all over the country and just laugh when people start cracking on the way other people hunt.

“It's kind of funny how Pat never show's the pictures of the deer he's hunting with their nose to the feeders until they have been wounded. How many have been killed with their mouths full of corn?“
You’re entitled to your opinion on baiting. But get your facts straight. Pat has never hid a baited hunt from us.
Kudo's to Pat for letting y'all sling arrows at him without censorship. With way too much sensitivity and butt-hurtness in the world today, it's always nice to see someone with thick skin.
Right jack. Never understood why people got concerned about what people who they never, met never will meet, and have no impact or influence in in aspect of their daily lives say about them.
it’s totally irrelevant yet more and more people sweat it like the opinions of others matter and will impact them.
there’s really very very very very few people in the world whose opinion of you should carry any weight whatsoever and them dudes ain’t hanging around on Internet chat rooms discussing the things we do to for enjoyment and entertainment.
Yeah it's cool Pat allows folks to express their opinions uncensored... Good man...
Back to the buck's survival - If that buck is not shot again, I'd bet money he'll survive until next season... Maybe Pat will get a crack at him as a nontypical next year...8^) Now, that would be cool...
After all our firearms seasons are over around here during late winter deer congregate (depending on the severity of the winter) and I'd guess maybe about 1 in 10 show up wounded or cripple, with open wounds, broken legs, blown off legs likely from shotgun slugs, etc. and all of them I knew of except for 1 survived winter and made it to spring green-up...
This guy in video photo attached taken on a January 28th, had a broken front right leg and a wounded left rear leg/hip (notice the swelling) and he was literally walking on just 2 legs and he got so skinny and hobbled so bad you'd think going to fall over, but yet he's working a licking branch in late January, and I know for a fact he lived to spring green-up...
They are truly amazing animals...
BTW - Luv that photo Jethro posted with arrow in flight, especially the coons relaxed on their butts enjoying the feast...8^)
I’ve killed 3 deer over the years with Broadheads in them and each wound was at least a year old. Your prediction of the deer dying is a guess at best. My GUESS is he lives. They are extremely resilient North American animals with a will to survive matched only by the elk.
Z, it’s from Pat’s shot video KS last year if you want to watch it again. I didn’t watch far enough to see the raccoons reaction after impact. I was too distracted by the corn in bucks mouth. :-)
They are amazingly tough animals. I have some old video of a buck dogging a hot doe with his right hind leg completely blown off at the knee from an apparent rifle hit. The wound appeared fresh because it was still bloody. Every time the buck tried to mount the doe, he'd tip over since he was balancing on one leg. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.
Matt
Yeah Jethro I remember that... Thanks... BTW, the coons scattered...8^)))
Pat - don’t feel bad. I have a buddy who specializes in that shot. He calls it shooting for the “center of m’ass”.
Last time he did it, the femoral artery was cut, blood trail was profuse and short. Shit happens.
