Anyone ever use a sous vide to simmer a skull? I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Works like a charm, no issues. I bought a cheap one to dedicate to the project, obviously don't want to use one from your kitchen.

I'm giving it a go, , Carl, what temperature is best? I set it to 190. The trash bag should help keep the goo out of the wand. If it doesn't melt that is. We shall see.

I may have went that route at one time i basically gave up on DIY euros cuz of the headache of cleaning but then I tried the pressure washer / steamer and the world changed 1 1/2-2hours in a simmer pot pull out and hit with the zero tip on the old Hotsy and it’s clean another 30min in aqua silk diluted simmer and done turn out excellent every time

Absolutely 0 effort on cleaning skulls with a pail heater, turn the heater at 113F place the skull in the pail with just water nothing else, came back in 5/6 days, Get the skull out, rinse it with warm water, put it back on the pail at 120F for degreasing with ammonia water and a squirt dish soap, come back in 2 weeks, repeat the process if isn’t degrease properly that’s the proper way to clean skulls,

Interesting! Never heard of the pail heater........................where do you get it?

The sous vide would work but chunks of meat could get caught in the impeller - wouldnt be my first choice of technique - much better options like the pail heater

i really like the pail heater, but I've been too cheap to buy one in the past. May have to treat myself this year, it would be much easier than what I have been doing.

Yes I had never heard of a pail heater either. Assuming it's for livestock, and possibly purchased at a farm store? But that does look slick . Brad, that's why I have it in a bag so the impeller doesn't get clogged up. I will report back as to how it works out. I have always used a propane turkey fryer setup outside and it's worked well, I just was looking for a way to not have to baby sit it as my time to deal with it was pretty limited this week.

Rut Nut. We sell a pail heater. Its alittle different but it works well.

No need to be as high as your 190 setting (although I don't think that's an issue), and no need to put the skull in a bag. Nothing gets caught in the impeller, by the time anything falls off into the water it's jello and the impeller just pushes it around. I've set the temp around 140ish give or take.

Add a small fountain pump to circulate the water on top of the part of the skull that extends out of the water. The pumps eventually die from heat or clogging, but they're like $10 on Amazon so treat them ask expendable.

Well I'm sold, the trash bag stayed together and none of the goo got out, left it in there for 24 hrs at 190° , pulled it out and garden hosed off the undesirable parts. Clean as a whistle. This is the easiest one I've ever done.

The only thing I should of done differently and I know better is to wrap the bases of the antlers with foil to prevent the grease stain that I will likely never get out. Other than that I'm very happy with the results.

I got a very interesting surprise with this buck, he has upper canines. I've not killed as many as some folks here but enough to know I'll probably never see this again. Pretty neat.

is there much smell to using the pail heater system any of the days?

It should work for even a large bison skull, if can find big enough container? and the horns can be popped off with a couple blows of a rubber mallet at what say day 2 or what?

Thanks for reporting buckeye!! Maybe I’ll try that this year. I’ve only got a kitchen one but I’m brave ;)
