My taxidermist that I use and hunt with some from Ne sent me these two pictures. The hunters had dropped them off with him this week.
Both deer were shot with bow last week and not recovered. The one the gal got was hit by her boyfriend. Same guy that shot the other tagged it with rifle.
One grossed at 211 the other at 214.

I'm trying to make sense from your post... no recovery yet they have the racks... shot with bow and tagged rifle. The taxidermist knowingly accepted these?

I think what he is trying to say is one was shot by a guy but not recovered. Then shot again at later date by his girlfriend. The second one a guy shot during bow season didn't recover and it came by him again during rifle season (that started last weekend in NE) and he was able to kill deer then with a rifle.

Nebraska rifle opened on the 11th. How I interpreted his text was both bucks were shot with bows the week before rifle and were not recovered. Then both bucks were shot with rifles during the rifle season. He texted me on Tuesday so I am assuming they were shot opening weekend.

This was what my taxidermist texted me. I just copied and pasted. I guess I understood what he was saying. Sorry for the confusion.

Buckeye, As far as where they were shot, the only thing I know is what towns. The 2 towns are 89 miles apart. One was by Fairbury the other by Brownville.

DanaC & Michael, lets just say the aspect of trophy management, or mature bucks, is not the highest priority of the NGPC. Yes, there are always some nice bucks killed each year in NE, but overall it could be better IMO. Mossyhorns & the General were both alive a lifetime or more ago.

Husker, not sure *any* state wildlife agency has 'trophy or mature' bucks high up their priority list. That said, I'd hunt Nebraska and enjoy my stay. The genetics are there.

DanaC, you are correct about the agency priorities. And NE does have good genetics, but getting a buck to live past 2-3 is hard to do here. I'm just spoiled living here i imagine and look at the "grass is greener" in other neighboring states.

I have hunted Ne since 2007. It was better before EHD hit. I guess seeing these 2 bucks shot this year had me hoping things would rebound. When we got that late October cold front this year it had a lot of deer in general on their feet. I would say deer numbers have bounced back. Not to the pre EHD days but better than what has been seen lately.
The 2 biggest negatives is gun season during the rut and lots of road hunting.

As a Nebraska resident, listening to my local biologist the day before rifle opener on the radio expressing our high deer densities and how every firearm hunter in the Keya Paha unit should take full advantage of the antlerless tags given in addition as a bonus tag, makes it real evident they don’t know shit, and our harvest statistics will show that after today. They make their claim by saying there are big numbers in the river corridors, which there is a good density many deer left the flats last winter looking for sanctuary on the river and never left. However their is not a single acre of public land on these river corridors and it is all leased up or heavily managed / outfitted so how does that paint a true picture of the unit as a hole, I specifically know of 1 land owner who was requesting depredation tags he has premium river bottom land that he strictly manages for mature deer plants acres of food plots and does not allow hunting without$$$, his reasoning for wanting the tags as he told me was too many does was screwing up his buck ratios, not really what I call good policy by our commission

JMO, anybody putting in food plots and then asking for depredation tags can Pound Sand. Same as the people who let Elk stack in on their posted property and want to be allowed to skim off a couple of bulls a year for themselves and friends… and public land guys can suck rocks…
