It's official- I've decided I'm getting the only tag in the state of AZ this year.

We had a massive die off……no sense applying. :)

How many points would you need to have a chance at a low end unit?

From: WapitiBob

14

bottom of the pile, 10

19-Jan-24
You have "a chance" with zero points in the random round.

You have zero chance in AZ if you do not apply.

Thanks for the Heads-up Jake.

I dug out my license and it expires on Feb. 6th., I hate that--- haha.

It's been 2 years since I drew a Bull tag so I'm due!!

Good luck, Robb

Wow. That many points? I have 2 points. I heard 4-5 would get you a tag in some spots and get into elk. Hmmmmm

Another question for the AZ application. Over the years I have learned that your first 2 choices are the only ones that will come into play when trying to draw a decent early archery elk tag, so do you gurus just put in for your top two hunts? If you leave the other 3 choices blank, does that screw up you application in any way? I think I finally have enough points to draw a decent unit and I don't want to make a rookie mistake that screws me up. Thanks guys!

2 only.

Also, IF (a big if), you want a chance at your 1st choice in the 1-2 (random) pass, make sure you don't draw your 2nd choice in the bonus point (1st) pass. I personally wouldn't give up a 2nd choice tag in the 1st draw just to have a minor chance of drawing my 1st choice in the random. Find 2 hunts you want, hardest to draw 1st, then the other hunt as 2nd choice, and roll with it. These hunts are creeping more than 1 point/year, the sooner you draw the better.

Thanks!!!

You haven't been able to draw with 4-5 points in AZ in like 15+ years unless you're talking about just 6A. But still, it's been...a decade at least.

So I shouldn’t buy any more points?? I’m 50. I am not waiting till I retire to go chase elk in AZ…..

The creep has been ridiculous and guys are dropping down from their dream units into the "mid tier" units and guys like me chasing a "mid tier" unit will end up dropping into a "lower tier" unit.

There are other options to chase bulls with fewer points in AZ but it isn't early archery.

Would some knowledgeable in AZ be willing to answer a couple of questions I have in a PM? If so just shoot me a PM. Thanks and Good Luck

KY, as Bob said, no need to put choices 3-5.

I got mine done/submitted this early AM.

My normal strategy: go for a Home Run 1st choice and then go for more drawable 2nd choice tag.

Just 3 points though, Loyalty, H-Ed and a normal point.

Good luck, Robb

Finished up my app yesterday. I should draw Archery elk in Utah this year so I swung for the fences in Az this year. Good luck to all of you!

Forget the tag, just hunt

29-Jan-24
I was fortunate to draw 5BN early archery in 2012 with 8pts. That same hunt last year was 0 drawn for any NR with less than 15pts... Glad to have experienced it when I did, but not holding out hope for an AZ tag any more than a NM tag as a NR!!! Good luck to those of you holding more points. Post up your stories so the rest of us can tag along vicariously. Pete

Unless you would like to legally hunt most big game in AZ. Then I'd suggest not forgetting the tag or hunting license you know the things you need to legally hunt. I believe they call hunting without those poaching.

Does every unit in AZ give a NR an opportunity at a random tag?

From: WapitiBob
29-Jan-24
If a single nr tag is available, it is available in the 1-2 pass.
