Our first bloodtrail challenge of 2024 is here! Good luck. I have a thick skin - and I'm gonna need it. My only ask is to keep your comments civil. We'll see how long that lasts. :-)
So, you're asking where the ten-ring is on a 3D target? Or, where to hit for a lethal shot? Two different things, and you asked both questions the way it's worded.???
A perfect score for day 1 ..lol Thank you Pat for another BT challenge . I always have fun with these.. until question 6 or 7 when you ask us which direction the deer went upon spatter analysis. I'm a decent tracker in real life I swear!
I got 0 on that one because I listened to Pat's caveat. :-(
How does it score, the higher the number the better the score or the reverse?
12 yards is perfect! And I don't think that is a steep angle. 25' up and 36' out isn't that steep IMVHO.
Thanks for putting this together, these are fun. So far so good. If past history is any indicator of future results, I anticipate a strong performance out of the gate but I will fade over time.
Perfect score so far. This won’t last long.
Shhhhh, she’s sleeping !
Shhhhh, she’s sleeping !
The question does not apply to me, even though you directed it to the reader. If I’m 25 feet up in a tree it’s because a bear chased me there and I’m holding on with both hands trying not to mess my pants. But….. in the interest of the game, I answered, correctly I might add. Seriously Pat, I love these blood trail challenges, even though my partner does the blood trailing.
Alright 9 for me . Hunting high ! But sober !
Well that was effed up. I would have chosen correct if Pat didn’t say don’t worry about the height and angle.
I truly look forward to these blood trail challenges...knowing full well I will not make it through unscathed. But for today - 9 points for Gryffindor!
Boom 9! And tomorrow I’ll start my slide to the bottom. Hahaha
"While hunting in CT an mature doe walks by your stand " this started totally unrealistic.
I got 9. Not sure why I didn’t get a perfect 10?????
JohnMC……….that seemed to be a bit suspect to me as well.
9 for me. Downhill from here I'm sure
Being a traditional guy trying to understand the 25’ and 12yd trig problem is hard. I have 3 ranges. 1. I can hit that (10-15yds) 2. I think I can hit that (16-23yds) 3. Then the I wish it was closer but I’m gonna shoot anyway (24-30yds) Angle doesn’t usually figure in. LOL
There’s no way that photo was taken from that steep of an angle.
"which one of these choices is the best impact, not where you should aim"
Color me dumb, but why wouldn't you aim where you want it to impact? I don't get the question with that caveat. ??
Ambush I interrupted that to mean do not consider that the deer may drop on the shot and there for aim lower on the vital in case that happens
I get it after reading a 2nd time. I would have aimed for D and impact would have been closer to B. But I'm a dumbass and answered too quickly.
Sigh, question 2 is bogus.
That might be why I got a 9.
That deer is dead within 100 yards. Pack your gear and go get her.
I don’t understand why there isn’t an exit wound on question no 2. I’ve shot a lot of deer with the same entrance angle, and always get an exit. This is with a recurve or longbow too. Most of them go down within sight.
The shot was a little high to the point where I thought it might be a single lung shot. Without an exit wound on the low side, the blood trail will probably be rather thin. I usually don't wait an hour. I usually wait at least 30 minutes to investigate the scene and determine what I'm going to do. Here, I doubt that I would see a blood trail for a while. We'll see on the next clue.
Love a good Blood Trail challenge! 18 pts so far. Looking forward to getting aggravated.
Dang , thought I saw her go down ! Still 9 for me
You have to answer with what Pat would do, not what you would do. If the deer were laying dead cut in half (Rage in the cage baby!) You still wait. Lol
Fuzzy is wrong. I would never ever shoot a rage.
2 for 2 you have to live in CT to know what Pat is thinking. LOL
^^^^THAT explains a lot, as far as trying to make sense of a lot of the head scratching questions from some of the past BT challenges…
Question 3 has the best answer option even seen on the Bowsite. Love it.
Pat, I know you played around with making your own arrows this year. What is the weight of your arrow and fps of this setup? Curious, with no pass through….. thanks.
thundegut X2
Best answer choice I've ever seen.
Like a screen door in a hurricane.
Pat, can we get a clue for number 3. You're not a newly wed are you?
3 for 3 just waiting for Pat to throw a curve ball.
First one of these for me , been on bowsite forever , so long I forgot my original handle , anyway it's fun !
Still perfect score but only because I'm not married
I’m at 18 only because of Pats sorcery with question #1 ;-) ( see guys it’s always someone else’s fault if you word it right)
Pat, if you would had Answer C say “So you can visit your girlfriend before getting home to the wife” you may have had more takers.
Yeah, Pat meant the landowners wife….. lmao.
I’m 3 for 3 so no complaints, I’d just like to know how Pat knows I’m an ugly mother ? In my case it would more like I have to get home to pick up my wife so she could help me load the deer ………
I'm not sure I agree with B. It might be too late to back out if you bump the deer before you determine the sign is bad. Just sayin.
My wife said it’s any of the other three.
There is not a lot a blood with high lungs, the cavity has to fill... Been there done that...
I'm the same as LUNGSHOT.
Interesting that the offside front leg stopped the arrow. I can’t imagine that would be the case. Is someone using expandable broadheads here?
18 here cuz of Pat's devious, misleading, underhanded, question 1.
Ya, everyone who shoots a lot of 3D got #1 wrong... Put C for #3 to see if there's any points.
Lmao!!
I don't recall the bloodtrail challenge ever making me laugh but Lord knows there have been a few WTFs
Lucky 18 so far... But we are just getting to the "no matter what you answer you are wrong" section ha ha ha!
head up, ear oit, deer is very alert and imo will jump the string at the shot - good chance anyway
What direction blood splatter questions always mess me up. I swear there must be 30 mph cross wind blowing those droplets.
At the time of the shot that deer was not at all on alert. Doesn't appear that the deer heard Pat draw even though he bounced that arrow around the rest.
There has never been a time in my married life that I would follow a deer if C was in play on #3. That deer is already dead, it ain't gonna get any deader in the 10 minute drive home and 10 minute drive back. So that's a grand total of 22 extra minutes that deer lays there.
That's funny stuff right there Von!!
That's a good Von...8^))) The funniest part is the 2 minutes...8^)))
I just like how Pat makes the game AND plays. Must be related to the “weights in fish guys”. ;^)
Joe what would be funny is if his score was less than 100%
As I follow this blood trail it dawns on me; this isn’t my deer. I shoot a 537 grain arrow with an IRON WILL single bevel. There’s no way I didn’t blow through that doe. ??
Easy so far, but y’all know Pat is devious and will throw us a dropping curveball and maybe a knuckleball before this is over. I hated knuckleballs !
last question was a trap.
not finding any blood and having no blood on ground are not the same thing. Who's to day a pin point drop did not go unnoticed by the tracker. remember this is not the worlds greatest tracker. that son was not along on this trailing job.
Rocking a 36, but I feel like any day that will come crashing down as I overread a question or screw up on splatter direction or can't see the deer in the "picture through the trees with a cell phone" question. But confidence is high for today ha ha ha!
I hate this game and never playing it again.
I've got a 36 for now but one more "banging the wife" choice and I'll be out.
I've always wondered why a max score on each question is worth 9. Why not 10?
10 is not divisible by 3 or 4 .5 and arrive with a whole number like 9 is
Dang , I aint never going to find this deer !
The dreaded blood splatter question!!! This one usually gets me, but I got it right this time!!!
So if the deer is standing still and we don't have an exit wound, how come there's blood in the upper left and lower right parts of the picture? Asking for a friend...
Blood splatter questions always mess me up. I'm usually looking for the next blood splatter to tell me which way it went.
The blood splatter question is always the stupidest one… like every single year.
In the diagram, there are four directional choices. What the hell happened to “C” ? A, B, C ,D are in the diagram Pat, but not the choices for an answer. Where in hell did go to school ? Jeez !
I wasn’t falling for the deer standing still trick and therefore scored a 0
Ditto TMac, the bass turd put his finger on the scale.
Blood splatter question/answer is soooooooo not the right answer.
I see I am in good company on the blood spatter question
I allllmost, picked standing still! Ughh. One of these years I will get the spatter question rIght.
All 9's til I got to the blood splatter, which got a goose egg. I'd also be looking at the tracks and leaves to confirm her direction.
I also thought the standing still was a trick answer, so picked "A". I would have picked direction "C" if it were and option.
Looked like standing still to me.
By far, the easiest grid search question.
x-man x2 Might be the first grid I got right ever.
Kind of got confused on the grid search but oh well.
Got grid wrong too. Almost picked right one, but with a black and white picture and Pat playing head games again, I decided the speck that may be a part of a deer, wasn't.
I fell for it this time and chose no grid big fat goose egg
Did you have Thornton come in and take the grid pic for you??
Son of a gun! Should’ve known.
Doing good until the grid. Guess I should have zoomed in? Big zero
Thought it was laid up against the tree facing forward a/b didn’t even look at d, damn you Pat . Nice b/w trick
haha, I spent a few minutes looking for tines blending into the brush until I remembered it was a doe! Amazing how a deer's body just blends in.
Yup, just in case, as your blood trailing your deer, that you didn’t get a pass through on, that you probably saw fall in sight, that you based your whole tracking effort off one snap shot of 5 drops of blood…..you lose your cognitive ability to see color…..and can only see one small tidbit of a deer (maybe)…….
Pat, I hope I get to hunt with you so I can help you blood trail one day ;)
In my defense, I did this one on my phone without my glasses
Pat took that grid pic at a 3D shoot when he was looking for his arrows again.
Was the picture.... fuzzy?
Died on yhe last two! I thought i seen s body and leg in a/b
I’m six for six……woohoo ! I’m looking for the dropping curveball now………..
Got clue 6 wrong. Now knowing the right answer and still nothing lol
Now, do I get out gloves and knives or do I go home first??
Go Home and bang brother!
Swampbuck-I DID TOO. I think we nailed it.. Body against the tree & a foot in the other.
Lol, I just went back and tried to find it again. I feel stupid. I don't know how long I looked at the pic the first time but it only took a couple seconds now.
The pic was simple. You think you’re looking for this teeny tiny clue and that’s not the case. Bit losing your ability to see in color was a true “real life scenario”. At least there’s not some dumb Xmas Gnome in it. Lol
Ha! I forgot about the Christmas gnome. Thanks Kyle.
The next question will be in reference to what Pat had the trimmings made into… I’ll go with 50% sticks and 50% summer sausage for the win.
Only partial credit for my answer on #8. Pretty sure the next one will be the ol' "take a wild guess how far she went"
I had zoomed in on the pic and was scrolling around...literally jumped when I saw the deer
Took me about 45 seconds to find the deer. On #8 I pressed the submit button before making an answer selection and somehow received partial 3 point credit. I’m guessing correct answer is “Double lung and hit top of off side leg”.
Anybody else ever look at the top 1000 and think who the F are all these lurkers?!
Sooo many handles I don't think I've ever seen make a comment or post a thread.
Only 4% of our visitors ever post even once. There is a ton of people here who never post, an overwhelming majority. I wish all of them would post - well, on second thought, maybe not all of them.. :-)
Splitting hairs on no. 7 ain’t you Pat ? I knew you would throw a knuckle ball sooner or later ………..
A lot of introverts just don't do social media. I go through long periods like that myself. Just the way it is ....
Drycreek, yes. The scores were too high during the first half of this challenge. That was unacceptable.
Interesting stats Pat. If even a small % of them could just contribute at least 1 hunting story this winter maybe we could bury the political threads for a while...
I don’t think I’ve ever had a perfect score. So the last question will be the “how far did she go”, total WAG one that you just roll the dice on.
Hmm. Told me my answers on the last two were correct but I got 3 and 0 points, so that’s neat. Rigged. :)
I got zero points for answering correctly on number 8. That’s a little ridiculous Pat!
Me too on question #8. Chose correct answer, got 0 points. Guess he wasn't kidding when he said the scores were too high.
I chose 37 yards and it said that the doe went 70 yards but I was awarded 9 points
Crap. You guys are correct. Question 8 scores were screwed up. I'm sorry. Just add 9 points to your score.
It's fixed now.
I hosed up question #7 but got all the others correct. Sadly we have to wait another year for the next one!
#8 was easy. Double lung is always 80 yards, give or take about 80 yards. Lol
Well once again I got sucked in by Pat's devious wording and my own error of not reading everything completely
I knew I saw that deer go down . ;)
I was doing good until #8. In my opinion, any one of those answers was viable. Great challenge though. I usually crash and burn sooner.
Distance ran is always up in the air, one deer runs 50 yards then the next runs full bore 150 yards. It seems to me that a deer with a double lung or heart shot and an arrow blown through the ribs without impacting significant bone is likely to stop and drop in the shortest distance. I've personally seen a good number stop within 20 yards, look around, flick their tail, sidestep, and collapse. Breaking a bone even after a double lung seems to cause the most panic and the craziest sprint away from impact. I've seen those nose dive in 50 or run full out, leg flailing for 200 yards, then just crash. It really varies deer to deer.
I got #8 correct LOL but screwed up #1 and #5. I almost mucked up the grid picture but decided to look further before hitting the submit button. Thanks for the challenge Pat
Damn it! I was going to put the right answer and opted for the wrong one. Sumbeetch!
I also got hosed on #8! I chose the correct answer but got zero points. I will just cry into my coffee and know in my heart that I managed to rock a perfect score on a Bloodtrail Challenge.
Thanks Pat, I did not read # 7 all the way and got a lower grade!! DAM
Damn, finished with 7 9's and a 3. Q7 got me. Thanks for the challenge Pat.
Pat, I'm pretty sure you create these with a sadistic grin... hahaha
I have probably shared 9-10 hunting camps with Pat. It pains me to admit it, but the content that he shares in many of the features is actually rather time consuming to construct. I would imagine that the Bloodtrail challenges are no different. However, it should be noted that the little turd blossom does seem to exhibit a rather sadistic grin when he yanks our chain....
Just as I thought Jake, just as I thought. One of these days I’m gonna ace one of these heinous challenges, but what the hell, it is fun !
Given all the previous info, the correct answer to #8 is the logical choice. But that makes you not want to choose it because it must be wrong!
Never got a perfect score before on these challenges until now! I think Pat is getting "soft".........
Which is it? On #8 the clue is about how "far". When restated on the answer choices it's about how "long"? :^)
Was ready for some distance vs time trickery.
I look forward to these all the time. #7 got me, thought for sure it was the shoulder blade. Most arrows pass through at close range. #8 couldn't be 37 yards, he found the arrow laying at 40 yards in a earlier question.
" #8 couldn't be 37 yards, he found the arrow laying at 40 yards in a earlier question."
Well, sure, for people that read them. What about the rest of us?
Didn't remember the 40 yard arrow recovery, so thought maybe that doe was laying at 37 yards and of course the dreaded "blood splatter" and direction of travel. Oh well, being from Minnesota, I know what "there's always next year" means.
Fun exercise Pat, thanks.
Another fun blood trail.. We need another one. Thanks. I'm guessing I have been on over 300+ blood trails of a wide variety of biggame. I do better in real life.
66 points. I wanted to choose off side high leg, because been there done that alot, but went with shoulder instead. Oh well. Not too shabby.
I want to know the dudes that chose "leave the doe - go bang the wife"?
Shoulder, top of leg (ie shoulder joint) ;now that's a hair splitter. I'll take the 66 Thank you Pat
Jack Harris the only reason I didn't choose that option is I'm not married
Upstate X2. Guess I always thought the top of my arm was my shoulder. :)
I would never aim that high, even though that deer is calm it still doesn’t guarantee the deer won’t drop. If that deer drops you miss or worse spine shoot her, I get it she didn’t duck but aiming at B would have been double lung, probably top of the heart, and being lower in the cavity should produce a better blood trail.
Pat-you need to prepare for MORE blood trail challenges this fall.. I[m getting very old & need this..
Yea, there is hope for you yet.. Thanks. I actually started bowhunting in 1956 & though I have actually blood trailed literally hundreds of assorted biggame, enjoy your challenges a bunch.. Thanks.
