I know it is not politics so forgive me, but I was out yesterday and watched some toms acting like they are beginning to think of spring and start figuring out who going to be the alpha bird. Nebraska turkey starts March 25th. I am ready for some longer days, warmer weather, and to chase some turkeys. Last year I killed one with my homemade bow mounted decoy. This I have bought a Ultimate Predator Decoy. Plan on leaving blind and Dave Smith decoys at home or at least in the truck and chase them with the decoy on the bow. Only about 2 months!

Went looking for eagles and found some turkeys and these guys. Might be a fun hobby to get into if I was afraid to break my neck.

A little ice fishing and a lot of volleyball and basketball games to go to between now and then, but I'm starting to look forward to chasing turkeys!

I'm not a big fan of Turkey bowhunting but have arrowed a couple. My G-son took his 1st last year & was thrilled. SO, I passed all my calls, blind & other Turkey things to him. I do have a Turkey, bird hunting dear friend I made thru bowhunting years ago. He has his Nebraska plans made. Last year he arrowed 2 there (public land) & another in Ks & 2 in his home state (4 bow, 1 shotgun). 2022 he arrowed 5 Turkeys & all long beards in 3 states.. I say he's not right in the head.

It’ll be here before you know it! I’ve seen (and gotten a lot of trail cam videos) of good numbers of birds this fall. It’s potentially looking promising for this spring. Trapped around 20 coons this winter, and am planning on trying to catch a pile more early this spring to hopefully help with nesting turks and pheasants.

Not seeing the numbers here like I used to. I shot one last year but that was about the only Tom I heard in a few spots. May just go for some big Crappie this spring.

One of my favorite pursuits, my late son and me with his first bow kill when he was 12, about 19 years ago. So many memories in the turkey woods.

Do many of you guys hunt them run and gun style? I think that’s what you would call it.
Covering ground to locate one, and then close the distance call it in.
A buddy said he used to hunt them basically like hunting elk in the rut.
Sounded pretty fun.

Yep, some on the driveway earlier this week, my friend at the farm showed me a picture of about 50 birds. Probably the same group I saw last time in Hunted in Dec.

Run and gun in an area you don’t know. Is the most exciting. Even for eastern birds, which can be a bit more challenging. Hunting them on my place is an ambush proposition. Since I know exactly where the roost. And can guess which way at least one group will head. Of course I still don’t kill one every hunt. But it’s no where near as challenging or fun as Run and Gun.
The South east US is my favorite place for that style. They are cagey birds so not too easy.
Out west in the mountains you have to run and gun. they are spread out.
The plaines from Texas to Nebraska Etc they are more visible and Hear them so more easily found.

Thank you for the great pictures and an actual hunting post! It's core ice fishing season. Turkey season not until the middle of April here. Around the middle of March I'll start getting ready.

Yeah, this would be in NE Oregon. Fairly certain My buddy will draw a spring bear tag in a unit where I’ve seen some Turkeys on other bear hunts.
Any tips/tactics for that style of turkey hunting?

Mid April here. IMO sprung eastern wild turkey is not a good fit for bowhunting so it'll be shotgun for me. I love fall hunting turkeys with bow.

Midwest I'm not sure if you have easterns in Iowa or what sort of terrain you hunt, but in the Appalachians if you're not using a blind, and you just set up and call its darned tough to call in a bird and get away with drawing and getting on target for the shot. The bird is mature, wary and he knows exactly where the "hen" is calling from. He has superman vision and he's already suspicious about the hen not coming to him. One tiny out of place movement and he's gone.

The Easterns on my farm are opposite of Fuzzy's. I could probably kill one with a golf club
From: midwest
28-Jan-24
Yes, we have easterns. I hunt small pieces. If I did run and gun, I'd have all the birds blown off the property in about 10 minutes. I've only killed a couple birds outside of a blind.

I love getting different perspectives. I can count on the fingers of my left hand the times I've hunted from a portable blind. And I'm missing a finger on my left hand. Lol
