I’m heading to the convention this weekend

I have 35 plains game on my wish list - I’ve got 11 done it’s gonna get harder for me

Does anyone know of any great outfitters I should talk to in Tanzania that could get 10-15 animals off my list with a bow?

There are plenty in South Africa but Tanzania seems like the ultimate location.

What is on your list. Tanzania although awesome is like very expensive. I think worth every dime because it's OLD Africa but nevertheless $$$$

No offense to anyone, because I understand, shooting most zoo animals isn’t for me. I will shoot a zebra. I’m after animals you eat. Here is what I shot so far

Cape Buffalo Eland Kudu Sable Common impala Black impala Saddleback impala Nyala Wart hog Springbuck Blue wildabeast

Everything else is game. I’m close to the spiral slam and impala slam. Zebra would be high on list and gems buck. I wouldn’t mind doing the wildabeast slam either.

Making a dent in the list is more important than one animal. You never know if you’ll get back

I was against shooting a zebra too. Until I ate a zebra loin and realized petty quickly that it was fabulous. I changed my mind.

Zebra are exciting, challenging animals that are a great hunt.

Tanzania is not the place for shooting color phase or other generic plains game. You go to Tanzania to shoot the gazelles (Thompson, Grants, Roberts) and things like lesser kudu, fringed ear orxy and gerenuk. Or of course, elephant and lions.

Yes, you can shoot eland, zebra, and some varieties of wildebeests, but you will pay 5x-10x the cost of a plains game hunt in RSA or Namibia.

Sounds like you need to head to Namibia. I would strongly suggest you go to regions where you can hunt animals in their native habitat, and not just shoot for variety on a game farm. Or you can hunt the east Cape of RSA and hunt for mountain reedbuck, vaal rhebusck, blesbok and black wildebeest. Zebra (several varieties) are available in almost any area.

Good luck,

Bill

Bill, thanks for the info

That’s why Tanzania outfitters don’t seem to post their animal list or pricing

Any outfitter I should talk to in Namibia?

I’m learning. I’d love to get another experience and not just do the same twice

I can highly recommend Engelbrecht safari's in Nambia. I hunted with Toby twice. He knows bowhunting, very knowledgeable and honest.

I would talk to Michael Fell. I have not hunted with him, but he is a very reputable outfitter.

I am not an expert. I’ve only been 4 times, but I have dreamed it and researched it for a long long time.

The problem with Tanzania is HUGE costs, and not geared specifically towards bow hunters. A 21 day safari will cost you $130-140,000, and I wouldn’t bet on getting 15 species with a bow. You’ll be spot and stalking. They used to have prohibitions against hunting within a certain distance of waterholes, I don’t know that they have relaxed that prohibition or not?

I haven’t been to Namibia. I would love to go. The problem is the species lists. You’re talking desert species. Kudu, eland, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, springbok, warthog, steenbok, klipspringer, gemsbok, etc.

I have been to Botswana and spent a few days last year on a huge ranch that does bow hunts. Tholo safaris. If you want a kudu, go there. They killed a 61 incher while I was there and a 60 incher the week after I left. Again though, it’s the desert species. The same species I mentioned above, except no klipspringers. No blesbok (cheetahs kill them all).

Really, South Africa has the most variety depending on where you go, and a lot more places geared specifically to bow hunters. South Africa to my knowledge is the only place that has the color phases specifically bred for hunters. Maybe Namibia has some now? I really don’t know

I’d love to do Zim or Moz, but again, not a lot of places geared specifically to bow hunters. Maybe the Save Valley conservancy in Zim?

Good luck in your search. Africa is amazing. I love it and wish I could go back. I’d love to chase some more of the spirals, but the ones I want are way out of my league. Bongo, LDE, Sitatunga, Mountain Nyala, etc.

I’ll be at SCI too, just drooling. Hope to catch up with some of the guys I’ve hunted with in the past.

If you choose to go to the Eastern Cape of South Africa I’ve hunted with Andrew at Crusader safaris and highly recommend. I’ve also hunted with the partner of Mike Murray at Africa Field Sports, and I’ve spoken to Mike. He is the real deal and a hell of a good guy. Took care of me for sure. They both have quite a few species available in the East cape and LOTS of acreage

I should also give a shoutout to Bowsite sponsor Ken Moody. I hunted with him in the NW province of RSA in 2021 and killed 11 animals in 9 days. And Ken and Virginia were lovely to work with and let me move the hunt out for personal reasons.

You have a few good recommendations above. Crusader safaris is well respected in RSA and I have hunted their properties. Tholo is very well thought of in Botswana, although I haven't been there. I would suggest you consider Jan Oelofse Safaris or Omujeve in Namibia. Both excellent outfits. Mike Fell is also excellent, although I think he only hunts Zimbabwe. I think he is still hunting the Bubye concession. Some of the dangerous game areas are obviously more of a challenge for bow hunters, especially if you are less experienced. Not all outfits really cater to bow hunters. Be sure to ask how many bowhunters they have guided each year. Good luck and have fun. Bill

Awesome list guys

Thanks so much for the tips

I’ve only been once, to RSA. And I’ll emphasize the point to make sure you get a PH who is an avid bowhunter. Africa is all about the experience. Decide how you want to hunt, what you want to hunt, then pick the place. Based on your list I think RSA is the most practical and unless you have the time for a 21 day safari, you’ll probably be blind hunting over water. I hunter with Cruiser Safaris and was very pleased.

If you pick your top 5 or 6 I maybe able to help you with a place in namibia or SA. Have a Ph friend who has a wildbeast slam for 24 and the other impala plus more. No better place then namibia for oryx and you can take 2 different kind of zebra's. Been over 9 times and going back in july for another trip.
