If the doe was experiencing a second,third, or quaternary estrus cycle, I'd bet that he'd be ready to go. She's probably the trigger, not the rut.

What's perplexing is she's a mature animal, I'd expect to see a yearling possibly get bred late due to not coming into estrus "on time" . I wonder if she herself was a product of a late bred doe. Interesting, I once saw a set of twins during Ohio's gun season (1st week of December) still very much in spots,and very small.. I always wondered if they made it through the winter. No mom around as far as I could tell.

We have an old doe here in the back yard that won't let a deer near a corn pile until she is done eating. She would never let this happen as they are all terrified of her. She creates all sorts of craziness from the rest of the herd. Especially once she's done eating. I guess its a dominance thing similar to male dogs humping each other.

That's often an indication that your buck/doe ratio is too high. When you have too many does, there are often many that don't get bred the first or even second time they come into heat. Whitetail are seasonally polyestrous, where they come into heat in the fall, and then will continue to cycle every 28 days until they get successfully bred. When you see mature does coming into estrous this late, she has had multiple cycles without being bred. ~C

True Tradman & Huntress, but if ya look good at that picture I'm going to go out on a limb and now think that is a shed button buck... (Button bucks do shed their buttons) Camera angle can be deceiving but regardless that buck looks smaller than the doe and if it is a button, could likely be his mother... She's probably already been bred earlier by a more mature buck, and at this time of year not receptive and that is just junior acting a little rambunctious...
There are no morals in nature and have seen it a few times before where junior gets a little frisky around momma, even during peak rut, but if she is receptive, there are usually bigger bucks around to run him off... If ya look he's not tall enough to reach her, he's just being a little rambunctious...

I've seen bucks doing rut like behavior late spring and even July. They are males after all, and I can't imagine they can turn off their hormones.

On Sunday at my archery club on Long Island right around noon a doe came running past with this buck on her heels. I yelled and stopped him to get a better look. Must have been playing in some bagged leaves before he found the doe. He ran off on her tail after stopping for 30 seconds.

I once watched a nice 8 pt buck hound doggin some does in a field and then scent check and breed a young doe on March 13th. He still had his antlers though, sun bleached white, and was seen on occasion with his antlers until April 8th that year.

Been a few discussions over the years here of late season fawn breeding and bucks still carrying their racks in April are not unheard of...
