I have never hunted NM for javelina, I am looking at units 29,30 as they look to be OTC. Do they hold a decent population of them? I have a different motive for spending time in the units if you can guess LOL. Figure it would be a good way to scout for barbary sheep as well. I would think being on the Texas border it would hold them fairly well but not sure if I am barking up the wrong tree and should look at different units. Not looking for honey holes but would take any pointers or advice you feel like throwing my way.

Unless you have a relative or friend that has found one of the few groups of javelina in those units, I would expect you could spend two weeks in them and not lay eyes on one. Yes, they exist, but are few and far between. Having hunted barbary sheep in both units I wouldn't think the two animals share much habitat. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Having hunted unit 30 for Barbary I have seen javelina's on 2 of the 3 hunts. They are few and far between. My only suggestion would be to find water sources and get up high to glass the area. They usually aren't too far from water. Barbary on the other hand are where you find them. There's no patterning them and they move a ton. They could be near water for 5+ days and never go for a drink.

There are plenty of Javelina in the OTC units. They've been expanding their range. I see them regularly when hunting quail. Dad and I each killed a couple when we got the bug to chase them. I've never seen a barbary in the pig areas. They're in the more rugged country. PM me and I'll give you more details.
